View Full Version : [Illinois] Looking for Legacy play group
Zappa

Hello everyone, I'm from Rosemont, Illinois. I am wondering if anyone is near the Chicago area that wouldn't mind extra people in their play group. My play group is rather small and only a very select few are serious as most are just casuals. I definitely wouldn't mind playing with a group that shares the same passion.
Anyone here near Chicago area? Thanks.
EDITED: 06 April 2010
To those who's looking for a nice legacy play group, or just looking for some casual scenes. Here's a few that I know off at the moment, some of which I go to some I haven't. But feel free to browse through the pages to see the other locations/ stores that holds some events as well. But as of now here's the things that I know off:
1) College of Dupage (Glen Ellyn)
The sign ups starts at around 6:15 pm - 6:30 pm. There's usually over 20 people playing here regularly, and nearing 30 as we are getting more people as well. Entry fee is 6.00, and it is 4 rounds of swiss usually. The one that's organizing the tournament said that we have enough people to be doing 5 rounds of swiss, but he can only do 4 as he has to work early in the morning. Parking is not a problem, people are friendly, and plenty competition around. There's also like a group of 5-6 that plays EDH in there as well.
2) North Eastern University
To those looking for a casual setting, and is into things like Pauper tournaments and such. Then this might be for you. While there are quite a lot of casual players here, there are also a lot of people playing video games, some people playing UNO, and some group playing pen and paper dungeon's and dragons. Parking would require you to park outside, but finding a spot shouldn't be a problem. This is for those looking for some casual scenes.
3) Dekalb
Someone whome I recently met at college of dupage said that, they have a small group of 8-10 players. I have not been in here yet at all.
4) The stores mentioned below or around these pages.

Do you play at CoD and/or Astro City?

I usually just play with my friends here and there, but sometimes I go to Past Times, at Niles. What is this "CoD" you mentioned? Maybe I can google it see far away it is, as well as that other name you mentioned. I am assuming that is where you play?

We are trying to build our Legacy group, we have a rather large type 2 following every week with FNM, as well as limited drafts, we are going to switch
our weekly Legacy to during the week, and per suggestions, run occasional larger Legacy tournaments, starting with a bigger one in January.
We will hold Legacy tournaments weekly on Wednesdays.
We tried running them on Saturdays, with way too many conflicts.
Our store is Galactic Force Toys and Games
at 3240 N Clark
Chicago, IL 60657
You can give us a call at 773-697-7751 for more info.

CoD is College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn where I play every Monday. Well, not every Monday because I'm taking a break from Legacy right now.
Astro City Games is in Schiller Park at Lawrence and Ruby so it might actually be walking distance from you. They run a Legacy tournament about every other month.

@Gforce
How is the population for Legacy? Can players also just meet up and play some games there? I've checked your website, and I'll stop by to check it out.
@Leftconsin
At CoD do you have many people playing (maybe around 8)? Or is it just a group of like 2-4 players? Schiller park is very close so I'll definitely check it out, but I am curious how the population for Legacy is.
@atropos
Are you strictly type 2 player? Or just casual? Or you looking for some Legacy players as well?

What time on Mondays do you have the tournaments. how long do they usually last, and what are the prizes like?
I live in the area during my breaks from college and it would be a nice change of pace to play against an actual field of Legacy decks instead of like 5 scrubs and 3 other Legacy players that my LGS tournaments when I'm home bring in every Monday.

We get in the upper teens to lower twenties in the winter, which is the low season. Current meta is mostly Zoo, Goblins, and Tempo Thresh. Start time is 6:30, entry is $6.

I live in Illinois and play legacy. I generally play at pastimes or Extreme Games. Of course I haven't been there in a while with me being at school out of state but I'm always looking for people to play against.

Heya,
Astro City games is at 9801 Lawrence ave. www.astrocitygames.com for event info and for phone/email etc. We host legacy usually once a month for what we have called, You Pick Your Prize. Generally people will walk out with Duals, Forces, and other great eternal staples. Our next tournament is coming up within a month. Weekends have been very busy with events so we're looking for a good weekend to get an event organized.

I have someone talk to me in PM and said that he can also go to Past Times. The place is like 20 minutes driving distance from me, so it is not a problem for me either. I am pretty much only free during Friday and Saturday evenings though.

I'm back in northern IL for the holidays (now through mid January or so), anything interesting going on? Does the CoD playgroup someone mentioned still play over the holidays, or or any tournaments/weeklies that people would recommend?

I'm also back in Northern IL for the holidays. I believe CoD is having an event on the 19th as well as some shops will have some legacy events over the next couple weekends. I believe pastimes is holding some small 8mans during their holiday event for a box of zen/m10 and I believe Astro City Games will have a legacy event or two at some point during the break. According to MTG Chicago they have Legacy events on Sundays but no real specific information. I know I'm looking to goto a few of these events over break as well as I'm up to playtest and hang at any point.

Thanks for the info on MTG Chicago. I've never dealt with them or been there I just saw on their website about it. Now I know to stay away from them. I'll probably talk with Eric at Xtreme Games to see if he plans on scheduling a Legacy tourny later in the month or next month since I know he had one a little while ago.

Stay tuned for some bigger prize events during the year. Sometime in Februrary-March-ish, I'll be running a Legacy w/ 1st getting a playset of Judge foil fetches. I also have an extra set of NM Unl Power (except for the Recall; it's only Beta) that I'll be running events for. 1st one (date to be determined) will be for the Ruby and 2nd will get a NM Beta Wheel of Fortune. PM me or look for me on facebook. Hope to have a good turnout tomorrow.

Bleh, talk about such bad timing. I missed out on the CoDs event as well as Astro's tournaments.
@Leftconsin
Do you guys still gather on Mondays? Like, will there be one tommorow? What time would you recommend for me to show up if you guys are starting one? Also hey, most important question for me to ask... hows parking there? Will I be required to pay for parking?
@danwho and Atropos
Btw, I spoke with Ron at pasttimes over the phone, and he said that he doesn't really mind if we show up there to play some games. I asked how about on fridays? If it will conflict with FNM event, his response was that there's plenty of tables to play. So basically were welcome to show up. you guys interested on playing some games this coming week?

At College of DuPage there is free parking everywhere. The tournaments start at 6:30pm, $6 cash to enter, and are 4 straight rounds of Swiss (due to time constraints). Turnout is usually 12-20 peeps.
They are in the cafeteria at CoD, so if you arrive there and don't know where to find anything you can just ask one of the students where the main cafeteria is. I'd recommend showing up at 6-6:15pm so you can find the cafeteria, meet some new people, and get any last minute cards you need.

I won't be able to make it as I'm back at college now. That's awesome that we will be able to play at Pastimes. I might be back the 2nd week in Feb for the weekend and will let you know. I'll also be back Spring break and Easter break and would love to play then. Keep me in the loop about it.

Does anybody want to meet at Pastimes during the week to play? Or any other store/location in the Chicagoland area?

I found some places that has new faces for me to play, though we can play any time at Pastimes when needed. Usually my friends and I just play magic at his place, have another friend that I sometimes play with as well.
Then there is College of Dupage, they have tournaments every Monday, which has 20+ people playing, and quite a lot of good players. Everyones mainly there for the tournament, but there are quite a bunch of people that plays EDH magic, as their casual games.
There's also North Eastern University during Fridays, however, the players are more casual. So if you're looking for competition, I dont think it's the place. However, they have so many people there that isn't just playing magic. Its a mixture of Magic: the Gathering... Console games like X-box, Wii, and so on, playing fighting games like Marvel vs Capcom 2, Tekken 6, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Melty Blood, Tatsunoko vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter and etc etc. There's other people playing other card games as well. Though not really a competitive environment, theres plenty of things to do, and as my friend said... ha ha... "they have plenty of girls". Also, they even have people playing pen and paper dungeons and dragons in there.
There's also Astro games, from what boomer mentioned, but I've never been there yet. I dunno if they have some or good amount of players.
Usually my magic days are Mondays and Fridays. But let me know if you want to play one of these days or next week. We'll try to set up a time/day when things are convenient.

Updated original post. There's also some events happening around Rosemont area this coming weekend, if anyone's looking to get into it. The legacy events happening around rosemont can be seen at pastimes(.net) website, but the frequent one I go to with quite a decent sum of people is in the original post. Thanks, I hope I see more of you around.
Hi there. I'm in Chicago and looking for a place to start playing. Looks like I'll have to check out some of the places mentioned. CoD looks great but I'm not sure I want to afford the weekly drive out there.

It's a pretty long drive for me too but that's pretty much all we have. Pastimes occasionally does a Legacy tournament but their next one isn't until June 6. Where do you live?

I wonder if it's a sign or something...
June 6 huh. It isn't just D-day. But also Bday.
I'm a bit south of the loop. By 31st in Bridgeport. Everything seems far from here.
So I've managed to make it out to the CoD the past 2 Mondays and I've been very impressed with the scene there. Friendly folks. Good and diverse competition. (I haven't seen a single Tarmogoyf there, though. Maybe I've just been lucky.) Reminds me a lot of when I used to play Vintage at Crazy Cards and Comics earlier in the decade. The only bad thing is that sometimes I need some random cards and it isn't at a store so those are harder to get.
I expect to continue to head out there from the city so if anyone needs a ride or wants to carpool, give me a yell.

This makes me wish I still had a paper collection. I live in Hobart, IN which is right at the corner of the state about 35-45 mins from Chicago. I exclusively play online now, but if anyone is close by, has the cards and needs help testing I would help out. Might be a good idea for me to go to some of these events if anything just to watch. Heck who knows, before I leave I might end up buying the real stuff again lol.

Theres actually a lot of Tarmogoyfs there, or atleast whenever I do play most of my matches there packs them. I see alot of decks using Bant colors, so its either them or Noble Hierarchs, but there are actually a lot of others decks as well. Place should get more people also since theres a few on my inboxes asking about it, as well as others on mtgsalvation. But yeah, with that many people you'll see lots of other decks.
From Survival Bant, No Pro Bant, CounterTop Bant, to like of:
Reanimator, ANT, Tempo Threshes, BG Rock, Mono Black Control, Zoo, Goblins, Merfolk, 43 lands, ThopterFoundry.dec, White Stax, Red Stax, Burn, Enchantress, UWx Landstill, and others. But those are the Stuff I've seen that I can recall. You'll also see some people actually playing some extended decks as well like some guy playing Scapeshift and stuff.
Pasttimes have an event for June 6th as well, but that's not something I can really go to. That day, being my B-day and all, won't be able to go there, nor not sure I'd wanna play magic all day. Someone at Salvation also informed me that theres a play group at DeKalb, thought I don't know how many people they have.

DeKalb gets in the low teens, but one of the MNL regulars has started up Legacy in Wheaton at the same time as the DeKalb tournaments. Its Wednesday 6:30 at the shopping center at the 1100 E block of Butterfield road in Wheaton. About a mile and a half away from CoD.

Shopping center? Wouldn't that mean we could only get a few games in? I may check it out one time, but I'm pretty comfortable with the group at CoD at moment, plus there's so much people that I really like the diversity. Playing so many styles of decks and stuff. As far as DeKalb goes, is it a pretty developed meta or is it pretty casual? Because I like playing in a developed meta, and if I were just looking for casual, that's what North Eastern University is for. All they play is casual over there.
Pastimes occasionally does a Legacy tournament but their next one isn't until June 6. Where do you live?
Dude! If you ever wanna play at Pastimes let me know, I have also have a group I usually play magic with, though majority of them are pretty casual, one of them is slowly turning competitive, slowly... but going that route none the the less.

By online are you refering to MTGO or MWS? If it's MWS I wouldn't mind playing with you regularly either. Just let some habits of mine slide though, when it comes to online magic, I suck at using phases lol. I just click the untap button, type out which phases I am in, and play like that. I keep forgetting to click those phases and steps button lol.

Its a normal strip, not a mall. The store has it's own front. And the group is the same people that play on Mondays.
Dekalb is developed. Because several people play at both CoD and Dekalb the metas are somewhat similar. Playing there I've played against Goblins, Reanimator, Aggro Loam, Eva Green, Dredge, and Coutertop, just to name the ones I remember.
Casual is Oswego. There was an santioned Vintage tournament there before Flash got restricted, and thats what I brought. Round 1 I played against an all walls deck that had one win condition: Stinging Barrier. Round 2 my opponent played Book Burning targeting me both games.

Well considering I can build Thresh (any combination), Bantaggro/Control, NO ProBant, The Gate, Death and Taxes, Merfolk, Reanimator, New Horizons, PainterStone, TrinketPainter, Baseruption, Burn, Dragon Stompy, Dream Halls, Zoo, Team America, EvaGreen, Enchantress and DeadGuy, I am pretty sure the "Imp" has it going on in the world we call MTGO.
@ Whoever asked, I was referring to MTGO not MWS. I'm one of those people who likes spending money on digital products because I'm extremely lazy and enjoy playing in my streak stained skibbies. Plus being a busy father of 3 rugrats probably cuts into my paper magic time slightly.
I did bust out of my digital shell and buy the Coalition vs. Negator thing they came out with to help teach a friend how to play the game.

I'm not sure of any places in Chicago Ridge but I go to Pastimes when I need singles. They are at 8351 West Golf Road in Niles, IL 60714. Their number is (847) 470-9636. They have a website (www.pastimes.net) which is somewhat helpful in terms of finding events but nearly useless in terms of searching for singles. Their website claims they have no Kira, Great Glass-Spinners but they in fact had a dozen or so. It's somewhat hit or miss but I've found that they actually do have most Legacy singles despite what their online inventory claims. Good luck finding what you need!
