Gain control of target creature with converted mana cost X or less.
(This spell's effect doesn't end at end of turn.)

I was just wondering opinions on this card in context to either a budget or casual-ish meta.

While Threads of Disloyalty handles most problems, mainly 'Goyf, it is sorcery speed and does nothing about manlands.

Mind Harness also handles Goyf for less but the restriction is obvious

Control Magic is almost laughable as a suggestion

Sower of Temptation is 4cc and somewhat killable

Shackles is very reliant on duals and is still a target for Grip

I simply was wondering if the ability to nab a quick Marit Lage or most other Threads targets is worth the 2 or less mana to make it instant speed and un-disenchant-able.

I've thought about Dominate. One powerful thing about it is that the card is an Instant. That means Cunning Wish can grab it. The big problem for me, though, is that you're paying a LOT of mana. Removal in Legacy is either one or two mana, so you have to ask whether the 3UU to jack Goyf is worth the extra three mana over just killing it. I think that's a lot to ask, especially when a more likely scenario is paying 2UU for a Kird Ape or 3UU for a Lord of Atlantis. When it cannot get a Tombstalker basically ever, Dominate is weak.

If you're looking for a similar effect though, Kaervek's Purge is a sorcery (Burning Wish!) that can really chew through a Marit Lage token : )

Control Magic is also not as awful as you might think...

That aside, I think it's too slow. It's the sort of effect that would be sick against Zoo, but paying 2UU to steal a Nacatal is awful. You're risking just being dead by that point, Threads and Harness are just cleaner, especially against tempo decks that might Daze it.

The best thing about Dominate is that it can't be Gripped, Nacatled, Swordsed, or Bolted. Once the creature is yours, it stays yours.

If you compare it to sower of temptation, the problem with dominate is that it does nothing if the opponent has no creatures. However, it is still quite good in my opinion. It potentially dodges counterbalance and you don't really have to pay that much for X.

More like Marit Lage, Fish, goofy combo, and decks whose curve is way too high

On a side note, I got my Goyfs at $3.50 ea. back when type 2 dredge existed w/ Magus of the Bazaar

Pro: Instant, Creature stay with you forever, get around CB.

Con: Lots of Mana.

To steal a goyf, you will need 5 mana. That is way too much. Thread and Sower does the same job for less mana. I guess the best use of Dominate as a 1 of for cunning Wish SB.

Aren't Marit Lage tokens indestructible? How does Kaervek's Purge deal with that card?

By dealling 20 damage to the controller of Marit Lage, the destroy part fails but the card tries to finish as much as possible.

Also, it is quite funny to steall a untapped creature and block an attacking creature with it.

Stealling dreadnought is fun!

Destroy target creature with converted mana cost X. If that creature is put into a graveyard this way, Kaervek's Purge deals damage equal to the creature's power to the creature's controller.

Unfortunately, Kaervek's Purge deals no damage to Marit Lage's controller, it basically does nothing. Delirium is infinitely better in this case.

It only deals damage if the card is put into the graveyard and since it's indestructible it will never hit the yard for damage to be dealt.

Man, Delerium IS pretty good there for such a corner case : ) I suppose we'll have to settle for hitting Dreadnoughts with Purge.

If Tog was any good, especially Tog with Cunning Wish, then Dominate would be pretty strong in that deck's sideboard.
