Daze + Wasteland

This is the situation:

I use Wasteland on an opponent's Volcanic Island. In response, he casts Daze for its alternate cost, returning the Volcanic Island to his hand. Is this legal? From what I understand, he cannot cast Daze since it has no legal targets.

You are right. It's not possible to cast Daze without a legal target.
