View Full Version : Life Link and Life gaining effects
I know that lifelink itself no longer stacks
If i enchant any creature with lifelink (say Rohx war monk) with spirit link which says "whenever this creature deals damage you gain that much life" but is not converted into lifelike in the new oracle wordings, would i gain 6 life whenever it deals damage?
Thanks..

Kind of. You gain three life as the creature deals damage (due to lifelink), and then the spirit link effect triggers. When the spirit link effect resolves, you gain another three. Only one instance of lifelink will ever happen, but you can stack any number of spirit links.

Sorry to necro this thread, but I can't open a new one if the argument is the same as my question. So, lifelink no longer uses the stack. I know it is a pretty noobish question, but answering noobish questions is the CI&R forum's purpose. My main doubt is:
Whenever Exalted Angel deals damage, you gain that much life.
Gatherer Card Rulings [Nov 2009]
* 10/4/2004: You only gain the life when the triggered ability resolves. If you are reduced to zero life before the ability resolves, you will lose before gaining the life.
If it works this way, then it's like the RWM + Spirit Link case. I don't know if they errataed Angel post 2004 (namely M10 scrambles my mind), making it have lifelink instead of "whenever [...]".
Please, can someone tell me what is the current wording of Exalted Angel? Do I have to trust the Gatherer?
Also, assuming the latest wording is Flying, Lifelink, Morph, then, what happens if I attach Basilisk Collar to the 4/5? Do I gain 4 life? Do I gain 8 life? Or do I gain either 4 life from Angel or from Collar? I do not comprehend Malchar's latest statement. No real problem if Angel actually says "whenever", though.

This is official as it uses Oracle wording. You gain life off the "whenever..." triggered ability. So if you have a Collar equipped to an Exalted Angel, you would net 8 life total, although you'd gain it in two seperate parts; 4 life from lifelink's static ability, then the final 4 life from Exalted Angel's triggered ability.

Here's what happened:
Since the beginning of the game, the way the ability was worded was "Whenever ~ deals damage, you gain that much life". It was a triggered ability. Some people referred to it as Spirit Link after the card of the same name. The problem was that the card Spirit Link gave life to the controller of the enchantment, not the controller of the creature, so the card wasn't the exact same as the ability.
Some time after the release of Time Spiral block - I think - Wizards made "Whenever ~ deals damage, you gain that much life" into a keyword ability called Lifelink since it was so popular and well understood. They used the name Lifelink rather than Spirit Link because they aren't the same, as above. Old cards (like Exalted Angel) were retemplated to say Lifelink on them instead of the "Whenever ~ deals damage..." ability.
When M2010 came out, they made it so that Lifelink was a static ability instead of a triggered ability. That is, you gain life simultaneously instead of through the use of a triggered ability. Now, Lifelink was functionally different from "Whenever ~ deals damage, you gain that much life." so they put the old wording on all the cards that originally had it. In some cases, cards that were recently retemplated went from "When ~ deals damage..." to Lifelink and then back to "When ~ deals damage..." (like Exalted Angel). (Note that apparently the only card that actually has had a different physical printing is Loxodon Warhammer, in which case the most recent printing was used as truth, which is generally what Wizards does with respect to a discrepancy between card versions. So Loxodon Warhammer used to be triggered, but now it will always be static.)
Currently, cards that say "Lifelink" have a continuous ability that gives you life simultaneously to the damage being dealt, and cards that say "Whenever ~ deals combat damage, you gain that much life" still use a triggered ability to give you life. The Gatherer is the ultimate source that determines what each card says.

Malchar summed it up quite nicely. (Only that it happened a bit later than Time Spiral, and that Lifelink is a static ability, but that's nitpicking).
One possibly useful bit of information though:
As Malchar pointed out, the Oracle Card Database is the ultimate source to determine that a card does exactly. Luckily, you don't really need it in this case. Every card, that was printed with the triggered ability still has it. Every card that was printed with "lifelink" still has lifelink, which nowadays is a static ability, so it should be pretty easy to determine what a card does even without Internet access. The only exception to this is the Loxodon Warhammer which was printed in 2 versions, one gicing a trigger, one gicing lifelink to the creature. They decided to leave it with the newest printing, so the Warhammer now gives Lifelink to the equipped creature.

Please, can someone tell me what is the current wording of Exalted Angel? Do I have to trust the Gatherer?
This is worth responding to directly. Gatherer is the official source of updated card wordings. Yes, you have to trust the Gatherer.
