Mine was the 7th edition starter box with the foily Thorn Elemental. Good times.

My first card was Atog
I used my friends for the longest time and then when 8th edition came out, I picked up one of those starter boxes with the CD in it. From it and some of my friend's cards, I made a 5 color, 90+ card deck of all creatures that had power and toughness greater than 4.

I remember getting a pack of P2 together with a gaming magazine way back when. It only included shit, naturally, but they got me and my brother hooked, although we didn't really know how to play.
We bought some Urza's Saga starters later on. Somnophore was the shit. I still remember my first real constructed build, a mono-blue deck featuring only creatures with flying (2x Somnophore, 2x Air Elemental and others), as well as 4x Counterspell, 4x Boomerang and a couple of Force Spikes. My brother made a mono-green "anti-flying" deck, featuring a lot of Spiders, Hurricane and other nasty spells.
Good times.

Heh, I had to break out the way back machine to answer that.
These were in my first deck in the order I bought them for it. I started by playing a game trying to help someone else learn the game. I ended up enjoying it so I hit up a local card show and picked up a few things I liked.
Somewhere around the release of The Dark or Fallen Empires.
1. Antiquities Ivory Tower (nice start huh?)
2. Nightmare (beta)
3. AQ Yawgmoth's Demon
4. Legends Underworld Dreams
5. UL Black Vise
Hard to remember what else was in that deck.
What's funny is 16 years later, I'm still good friends with that dealer I bought all those cards from and I had met him that day.
I actually still have that same Ivory Tower in my collection.
I got into the game through Shalandar. Didn't get it at all, but it got me to ask a Portal starterset for my 15th birthday. Played a lot with it and started buying different boosters (5th edition, homelands, stronghold) and the 4th edition starter set. From the booster you got with the Portal set, I pulled out a Natural Order.
First real deck I build was a build with Orders, Thorn Elementals and Overruns. Cast a turn 3 Order into an Elemental, turn 4 Order into an Elemental and turn 5 Overrun them into 2 10/10 with supertrample. The deck was disruptable as hell and only worked when you got lucky, but man did my friends hate me and that deck.
One funny thing, in my first 5th edition booster I got the Brute, but I had no idea what a enchant creature was. So I build a deck in the Mircophose game with only mon's golbin raiders, the brute and mountains and let my opponent play with them, only to find out how the computer used that card.
Good times :)

4th edition starterpack consisting of manavault, royal assassin, earthquake and serra angel.
Godly by the standards of that day and age, too bad the older guys ripped them all off for gaea's lieges and craw wurms :(

A so-called "starter deck" from the brand new set that had just come out, Revised. $8.95+ tax at the local comic book shop. I was only 6 or 7 at the time, but if only I'd known...

First rares were Force of Nature, Thran Golem, and Time Spiral. Besides those:
Reef Pirates
Uthden Troll
Wall of Roots
various Circles of Protection
Prodigal Sorceror
Wall of Ice
Glacial Wall
Water Elemental
Sea Serpent
Giant Shark
are the ones I can remember.
Later on there were Plated Spiders, Elvish Piper, Craw Wurms, Scaled Wurms, Rootbreaker Wurms, Crash of Rhinos, and so on. That was fun.
Oh, and Mist Dragon.

A friend, who taught the game to our entire local group, gave me a complete RG-Beats deck for some bucks. It included everything a newbie needed from Volcanic Hammer and Rhox up to the deadly Tangle Asp + Lure "combo".
Ah, those were the days.

The first cards I owned were from a Revised starter pack (which had a Demonic Tutor and Serra Angel; I don't remember the rare(s)) and two boosters of Fallen Empires (I just remember getting that Thrull licking a knife and some seriously BAD ASS (!) Order of the Ebon Hand). First deck was B/G. It was awful.

I still have the Serra Angel (and got it signed by the artist in a convention in Philadelphia (Origins?) in 1995).

The U/B Invasion Starter was my first deck. Stalking Assassin and Phyrexian Infiltrator ftw.
Activating the Infiltrator, and the activating it again in response to it was awesome - for a mere 8 mana I could swap ownership of any one of my creatures for one of his! How could I lose?
Good times.

12-30-2009, 09:56 PM
A German Tempest Booster containing Dark Banishing, Blood Frenzy and Sea Dragon among others.
I thought the cards functioned like this (I was six years old) :
(What it really is) -> (What I thought)
Mana Cost -> The colorless mana part was the cipher, the mana symbols zeros. A Sea Dragon had 400 life points, obviously. You wouldn't be able to battle with i.e. Sliver Queen because it had 00000=0 life. It was therefore useless.
Power/Toughness -> That it could deal either [P] damage a turn or [T] damage a turn. Games would be rather long, apparently. And I knew at that time that this was why "Pokemon was so much cooler than this shit".
Rules text -> Something that should be ignored most of the times. I did not understand English at that time.
Forests -> Awesome cards! They were green, so they could shoot lasers. That makes perfectly sense. I didn't knew what a Forest meant in Danish, but I saw a lot of trees which I translated to be guns. Well, some of them, other were just the background of the actual image of the all-powerful Forest.
Islands -> Something that shouldn't be taken very seriously. Come on, a water drop?
Creatures without haste -> Creatures that were "sick" (so I was told), so they could't battle. Hey, but some of them had a gold expansion symbol? (Urza' Saga)
This card: http://magiccards.info/us/en/344.html -> The "mana" mountain. If you pierced this apparently shitty card (it didn't have a big fireball in place of the rules text) with a needle, you would turn into a magic card. This card. This wasn't true for any other Mountain, just this one. I tried it once. It did not happen.
Those memories...

Fallen Empires pack.
They didn't mark rarity at the time, so my brother and I had to guess. I decided Order of the Ebon Hand was the rare for sheer coolness, which was strangely prescient given the candidates for the actual rare (I really don't remember anymore).

I bought a scourge BG Big Deck something with elvish aberition and final punishment and other random stuff. I used to think elvish aberition was the best card every printed because it allowed a t4 krosan dover, t5 elvish aberition t6 big dude/tooth and nail.

God I miss that deck.

My first cards were a 6th Edition Starter deck and 3 Boosters. The standouts were an Archangel and a Bird of Paradise; along with assorted/obvious commons: Terror, Counterspell, Llanowar Elf, Pacifism, Shock, etc.
My first deck was janky elves w/ Llanowars, Priests of Titania, Deranged Hermits, Taunting Elves and Beasts of Burden! It eventually became netdecked Trinity Green; and then R/G Fires when Urza's rotated for Invasion.

First cards I ever bought - a starter of Revised. Opened a Wheel of Fortune and Plateau. Ended up trading them for a couple of Meteor Showers down the road, mostly because they had that XX in the casting cost... Ignorance is bliss.

My first set of cards was Portal. My mom bouht it for my brtoehr, but he quickly lost interest. The biggest card was an Archangel, but my favorite was Hand of Death, which I still have and still feel is awesome (Hey, it kills Goyf and dodges CB :-P.) Soon afterwards, I got a pack of Exodus, and the rare was Null brooch. I got 5 packs of Sixth, (rares were Pentacle of the Ages, Pearl Dragon, Crimson Hellkite, Diminishing returns and Illicit auction, Hellkite of course being key.) This led to some interesting interactions. Given how activated abilities had been retemplated, I thought that you could cast Sonic Burst, discard 5 cards, and win the game.

I think my first cards were the Goblins 7th edition precon. My little brother got the green precon and we battled it out hardcore. And by hardcore, I mean we played for a little while, and then forgot about magic for a little while.

A 4th edition starter back in '96. The rares were Sleight of Mind (too confusing for me), Mind Twist (didn't realize how good this card was) and the big daddy of 'em all......COLOSSUS OF SARDIA.
Holy wow! 9/9! That's the biggest thing ever! Who cares that you had to pay 9 mana to untap it, you're crashing in for 9 trampling damage every turn. The starter also had a Twiddle in it, so you can bet that I was livin' large.

He's from Denmark.
I started around Apocalypse. My first card was Icatian Moneychanger, got it for free at a local store. My first pack's rare was a Whirpool Warrior. Spiffy.

Portal I and II were some of my first cards. I also remember buying Weatherlight packs and 5th Ed. starter packs. My first deck had 5 Volcanic Hammers in it (I still have them) and I thought Sawtooth Ogre was a real bad ass for some reason.
My first rare was a Shard Phoenix from a pack of Stronghold.

Hey all,
Cool thread - thanks for sharing
My first Magic purchase ever was 26 boosters of Unlimited back in December of 1993, while I was on Christmas break from college (cough... I'm old... cough). I still fondly remember sitting in my truck as I opened them, pulling a Shivan, Chaos Orb, and 2 Forces of Nature. Shortly after Arabian Nights came out... Desert Twister cemented green as my color of choice!!!
Ahhh... the good old days
Take it easy,
Jared
I never really bought packs. A friend just handed me some random stuff to play with a group. Memorable cards included: Vizzerdrix, Counterspell, Phage (I believed it was insanely awesome), Terror and Psychatog (which I initially thought was a terrible, terrible card).
I didn't really get into competitive magic until another friend loaned his Goblins, Affinity and KCI decks to me. I bought MUC singles as my first real deck.
peace,

That deck was awesome. Most decks in the Tempest/Urza's era were really awesome, except for the ones that were so awesome they got banned.

Hmm, I had that too. Along with Thran Golem, it cemented Golems as being pretty cool. Patagia Golem was a wimp, though.

My cousin got me into it around Ice Age. He was a teenager and I was five, so anything he did was awesome. Good thing he was not gay, otherwise I would be licking balls right now. Gaea's Liege was the shit. I had no clue how it worked, but it was */* (just like Lhurgoyf, another baller), so it had to be good.

First cards I ever played with was a random pile of black jank my friend handed to me one day. It started out as mostly Odyssey and Legions bullshit (with a big finisher-the 6/6 Scion avatar something among other shit like Cabal Torturer, or as I called him, Ozzy Osbourne) but quickly grew to incorporate older cards such as the east and west paladins and terror.
I quickly learned what card disadvantage was the second I sac'ed three clerics to get that Scion into play only to have it killed instantly, losing the game soon after. Shitty ass Scion.

My first exploits in the wonderful world of magic.
I read about magic in a games magazine around when unlimited was released. I went to our local games store and they had never heard of it. So I ordered me an unlimited starter.
I couldn't find anyone to buy a starter as well. Too expensive  If only we knew. So I did nothing with it. Then I decided to buy another starter which was revised.
After a while I got my cousin to try it out with me. We learned the rules from the booklet (all wrong of course). But we got into it. By then Magic was popular already. I also had another cousin join in as well. We all decided to play specific colors. I choose RG. One cousin UB, the other either BG or UG (I cant remember). Nobody played white.
I don't remember all the cards but I had 2 Birds of Paradise and a Mox Pearl (not sure if it was unlimited or revised). Unfortunately nobody wanted to trade the Mox Pearl with me since nobody played white. So I was stuck with that terrible card
I had a notion of rares, unc and commons but thought Bop was common since I owned two of them. Eventually I went to that same store again hoping to get rid of that darned Mox Pearl. So I asked out loud if someone wanted to buy the my Mox Pearl. Someone offered me 50 guilders for it, quite a lot but I think it was around 150 guilders at the time (which I did not know). I was about to go for that 50 guilders offer when this guy told me it was worth much more. So I asked if he wanted to buy it. He did not want to buy it but didn't mind trading it with me.
So I went with home with him where he abused me. I traded away my Mox Pearl and 2 Birds of Paradise since they were common anyway. I got a lot of cards back. Oh was I envied my my cousins for those Craw Wurms and all those Fallen Empires cards! It actually took me about 10 years to own any Birds of Paradise again. Not to mention all the money I spend on Fallen Empires afterwards.
How naive I was at 19! That whole incident has defined my character, I still hate injustice and it has taken me years to accept that it simply is an unfair world. If only I knew who this dude was that traded with me. If I would meet him now I would tell him what a bastard he really is.
My very first start was a starter pack from Nemesis in 2000 I think (the one with the big green foil Rhox in it), and the first rares were thereby Rhox and Vizzerdrix, but the card that was burned into my mind for ever was Counterspell (still don't know how I got that one but it was in one of the decks we played with). A single crappy blue card stopping my Rhox - that was pretty gay.

The first card I ever owned came with a MtG magazine I bought in Belgium.
Dark Privilege, a common from Visions but it had cool art.
That was around 1997. It took a full year to finally start playing the game when Exodus was released.
My first booster was a Tempest one, and I actually got a Cursed Scroll out of it. Thought it sucked big time, since it only dealt 2 damage a turn.
That could never kill any huge creatures my opponents played.

My grandpa gave me a hundred dollar bill for my birthday about a decade ago. Pokemon boxes costed $110 after tax, but Urza's Saga costed $98 at Wizards of the Coast.
Gaea's Cradle, Morphling, Tolarian Academy, Argothian Wurm, Greater Good, Back to Basics, Mishra's Helix. It was a good box. Of course being the 11-year old that I was, I had no fucking clue.

Some black/white Ravenous Skirg Aggro deck from Urza We usually played during breaks at school (15 minutes) and I soon switched to UW WALLS(!). Back then we thought you could attack with them (4 mana for a 3/5 flying Wall of Swords?) and every deck in the world packed 4 Congregate which essentially made like 90% of the games a draw. Until I discovered Radiant, Archangel and Masques gave me Cho Manno's Blessing which I played 5 copies of because it was just THAT good!
Oh, and it was widely agreed that the perfect start one could have was Turn1 Plains into Healing Salve for 3 life. SAVAGE TECH! Good old times..

Great thread. My first purchase was a 4th Edition Starter with Armageddon as a rare. I remember thinking, "What a terrible card, why would I want to destroy my lands!?!?!" I'm pretty sure Onulet was my favorite card in that box.

Back in the Onslaught-Mirrodin days, when I still used to play YuGiOh, this chick built me a budget elf deck.
I still use that elf deck, although its a high-octane Legacy version. However, the only original card left are the Tribal Forcemages.
My first packs were Onslaught, Legions and Scourge. I bought them all at the same time.
I remember pulling a fetchland (I believe it was Polluted Delta) from Onslaught, which I traded right away for a bunch of elves. I still regret that trade.
I pulled a foil Caller of the Claw (which made me really happy since I was building an Elf deck) from the Legions pack and a red rare that I cannot recall.
I pulled a Dragonstorm from the Scourge pack. I remember the Dragonstorm because I had it for the longest time until Time Spiral. Suddenly everyone wanted it.
My first cards where in the Starterpack with the Foil Rhox.
These were the days, Llanowas Elves and Dark Rituals still put lands from the Library into play =).

Oh, and Mist Dragon.
<3 Mist Dragon.
Yeah, I love him too!
My first cards? I don't remember them well, but as I started with 4th Ed.starter, Ice Age starter and a few boosters, I assume I had some Lost Souls, Craw Wurms, etc. I remember Mountain Goat, Regeneration, Death Ward, Mon's Goblin Riders, Thicket Basilisk and another useful stuff...

Phew, I was always afraid I was the only person dumb enough to make that mistake.
I started with the 7th Ed Starter Decks and two Oddysey Precons. And I had to save 2(!) weeks of allowance for one pack of boosters. That means I needed an entire month's allowance for a pack of sleeves (could only buy Dragon Shields).

I started after Revised and my first cards were a random pile that a friend gave me. He taught me to play (mostly incorrectly) on picnic tables and such during scout camping trips.
I bought a lot of Fallen Empires when that came out (I had no idea how bad it was). My favorite FE card was Icatian Phalanx. I mean, how could anything get through a band of those?
My first "serious" deck was a 5 color millstone deck. Yeah... (although, I still love millstone and collect them)

Judgment precon plus a few Torment boosters I got for my 13th (I think) birthday from a friend. The precon had Thriss, Nantuko Primus and Crush of the Wurms; one of the boosters had Angel of Retribution (forget what was in the others). God I miss those days  .
I started when Revised was still in print, and the only cards I remember opening were Ivory Tower, Keldon Warlord, and Living Wall. I was insanely jealous of my brother who opened a Vesuvan Doppleganger and a Shivan Dragon.
The first deck I ever played was from a friend and it had Grizzly Bears, Craw Wurms, and Wall of Brambles in it.
Phew, I was always afraid I was the only person dumb enough to make that mistake.
Mwahahaha, I actually read the rules and concluded this would be wrong. my friends accepted this and about 4 weeks later we went to FNM on a regular basis. Shit was so cash when people first started to skim through our decks and they told us which cards were too old to be Standard-legal...
Lots of confusion and after 2 breaks I'm here, playing again and I still don't like counters. Killing my poor Thorn Elemental for just 2 Mana is imba!

Nah, It's quite common, but I bet I'm the only one that once faced a guy that could put lands into play directly from his deck with Lonely Sandbar. Cycling FTW!
I first started playing with the cards of a friend of mine but soon bought a preconstructed Apocalypse deck. Of course Flametongue Kavu was crap, so I traded it for a couple of Merfolks Of The Pearl Trident wich where the shit!
Also, Quicksilver wall was OMG since I never actually noticed the "Any player may play this ability" part.

My brother taught me the basics to play Magic, then made me play with Shandalar. At that time, I was only a kid, so my friends were all about cool card games. One of them was collecting MTG because he liked those black cards. He gave me an Unlimited Demonic Tutor: "Do you get the coolness?" he said. I still own that Demonic Tutor. It was my first MTG card ever. The first cards I bought with my own money were 4x Savannah Lions back in 2006, when they were still good.

The second thing I got was an Onslaught tournament pack that came with

Bloodstained Mire (also crap, why would I pay 1 life for a land?)
Centaur Glade (awesome)

I'm pretty sure my first rare (U1?) was The Hive. I thought it was pretty badass. It didn't make it into a deck though until later.
My first two decks were just like most other peoples of the time; RG beats with Channel Fireball combo, Manaflare, Shivan Dragon, Force of Nature, Orchish Lumberjacks, Kird Apes, Lightning Bolts, Tinder Wall, BoP, Llanowar Elves, etc. and WU control with Serra Angels, Counterspells, Vesuvan Doppelganger, Balance, StP, Leviathan, Icy Manipulator, etc.
Finally, after I think Visions, I created "The Machine" and my buddies were honestly scared of it. I transferred all my artifacts and the Urzatron into it and it seemed to dominate at the time.
Looking back, obviously all these decks sucked ass with the critical turn being about 20 or so. Whenever I think of how bad I suck at Magic today, I just rekindle a memory of yesterday and I feel better.

The first cards I owned myself were the contents of the "Heavy Duty" precon from Invasion. Using Thicket Elemental with Kicker to pull out a Kavu Chameleon was pretty awesome. Later when I got the 7th Edition starter I could even use Thicket Elemental to bust out my Thorn Elemental from my library in like 1 in every 20 games!

I know that the first two cards I ever bought, as they were side by side in the Ice Age 60-card starter, were Kjeldoran Warrior and Orkish Lumberjack. I also had a Necropotence and eventually a Force of Will. Considering the concept of paying life to do things (wordy things) to be absolutely stupid, I threw together a snow-zombie deck and gave it to a friend for his b-day.
Oh, the silliness that was the lack of internet in the '90s.

My first rare was Cosmic Horror. That monster is amazing! First Strike baby, yeah!
My first trade featured me giving up a Blinking Spirit for a Scaled Wurm. Damn, I was dumb...

Not as bad as my first trade...
The first cards i bought was a 4th Ed Starter Pack. One of the rares I got was a Royal Assassin.
Being young, stupid and not really understanding the card I traded it with my friends elder brother for a Scaled Wurm. WOW a 7/6!!!!
Yeah.... still regret that, was such a good card back then.

My friend had a shoebox full of cards, and back when I started, I'd go over to his house and we'd play with those. I think the first cards I ever owned were a Rubina Soulsinger from chronicles, and a gold-backed, square-cornered Earth Elemental. I wish I knew where those were.

I had a Polar Kraken in my first booster and I build a deck arround Zuran Spellcaster and Prodigal Sorcerer :-)
My first card I ever bought as singles (not boxes or packs) was four Revised Demonic Hordes from a guy in the Swap Sheet. Needless to say, I was a fan when Helldozer came out. I still own those same mint Hordes.

I sort of feel sorry for people who are nostalgic for Onslaught block.

It was my first rare.
I tought it was the last crap, b4 finding out how awesome that card was in the GW Madness deck packed with mongrels and glory.
My first starter was a 5th ed that featured a Living Lands, Wrath of God and a Pentagram of the Ages. Of course my friends who taught me how to play traded all the good stuff for random blue cards, I remeber that my first deck featured MVPs like Phantom Warrior, Azure Drake and Ray of Command!

I started right as Unlimited was becoming difficult to find, but my first purchase was a starter and 3 boosters of Unlimited. The only things I really remember about those packs was being really disappointed that I got a Tundra, but excited to pull an Icy Manipulator. Still have those to this day. Good times, good times.

Mid '96 me and a couple of friends got a bunch of 4th Ed. boosters pack, so I kept the good black/red stuff to make a deck with shiva, bolt, hippies, assassin and a bunch of crap cards. Awesome deck!
Soon after that I got myself a booster box of Mirage, best set ever with the greatest card to this day - Final fortune.

My first purchase was 5th edition starter pack. It came with Dancing Scimitar, City of Brass, and Righteousness as rares. Guess which one I traded away for a Craw Wurm?
None of us knew the rules very well. We didn't know that damage was cleaned up at the end of turn, so Prodigal Sorcerer was amazing. I remember trading a bunch of stuff for a Xanthic Statue, because it was a fucking 8/8 trample, didn't die to Royal Assassin (we didn't know that you could use abilities at instant speed), and looked pretty bad ass. I had a lot of fun smashing people with that card.

I remember opening my first pack of cards and pulling a Necropotence, only to trade it to Randy fucking Buehler for a bunch of useless crap. :(

The first pack I opened was Fourth Edition, and all I remember was the rare was Birds of Paradise. Naturally, I traded it because I was eleven, and I took one look at the artwork on my buddy's Carnivorous Plant and was like, "Oh yeah. That's what I'm gonna win with."
Sadly, I later learned what a wall was...
6th edition starter containing Celestial Dawn and Goblin King.
still got the dawn and traded the king for 2 rhoxes as far as i remember.
i am happy that i kept a card out of my first starter :)
