GBW Vial Stuff (a.k.a. the deck formerly known as Death n' Taxes)

Death n' Taxes was known for playing utility creatures paired with Vial, allowing it to perform a huge amount of tricks that created both card and tempo advantage. But it's time has come and gone, M10 new rules killed half of its tricks and the deck just isn't what it used to be.

This decks follows the same premise, utility creatures paired with Vial and some removal. But it gets away from monocolor and, instead, tries to play the best 2-drops spread between white, green and black.

Note: I haven't actually created this deck, I saw a friend playing with it and found it to be very intriguing. As I see a new archetype my first thought is to think it sucks and can't become a tier one deck. I'm posting this deck idea here because it seems like it could become something, it has all aspects needed to make good decks (focused, plays powerful card, cards advantage, etc).

Card Choices:

Maindeck

- Tarmogoyf: here just to avoid "Needs moar Goyf" kind of posts. Not really, best 2-drop... hum... ever?

- Dark Confidant: great source of card advantage, it's a weak beater but you can't ask for much more for 2 mana, right?

- Tidehollow Sculler: great disruption against most decks (combo and control especially). Draws removal to himself "protecting" your other creatures. Great synergy with Vial, as you can't put it into play at any time, being your opponent's draw step probably the best time.

- Qasali Pridemage: what can I say? Who doesn't love playing a Watchwolf that can blow away most of your problems for 1? Nowadays almost an auto include in any deck playing GW.

- Knight of the Reliquary: just a fat creature for 3. Nothing to see here move along. Also serves in a minor mana denial plan involving Wastelands and Vindicates.

- Swords to Plowshares: you're playing white? You're playing 4 of these.

- Thoughtseize: great turn 1 play when you don't have Vial. Good against any deck other than Mono Red Burn.

- AEther Vial: speeds you deck, makes your creatures uncounterable and allows you to play them at instant speed.

- Vindicate: catch-all removal. Better than Maelstrom Pulse because you don't want to hit Goyfs with that and hitting lands is ocasionally good.

- Sensei's Divining Top: card quality is always good. The higher amount of fetchland and bolts from Thoughtseize make these a fine choice at keeping your self from losing to Dark Confidant. More fetchland also mean more filtering.

- Dual Lands: the deck is very color intensive and we need a good split between these, to garantee we have all the right colors even when facing Wastelands.

- Fetchlands: we probably wanna play more of these then the usual, just to make sure we have the colors we need when we need it.

- Wasteland: despite the costs of our creatures being so color intensive we can probably get away with playing 3 of these.

- Volrath's Stronghold: a nice adition to any deck playing black and creatures, but just as a 1-of.

Sideboard

- Leyline of the Void: graveyard hate is a necessity. This card allows you to disrupt their graveyard while being able to apply pressure or disrupt their hand.

- Engineered Plague: very good against tribal decks. I'm looking at you Goblins/Merfolk.

- Gaddock Teeg: good against both control and combo at the same time. Also a 2-drop.

- Krosan Grip: you're playing green? You're playing some amount of these.

- Pernicious Deed: nice against swarm decks, Enchantress, Stax and some control decks.

Sample Decklist:

4 Marsh Flats
4 Verdant Catacombs
3 Scrubland
3 Bayou
4 Wasteland
3 Savannah
1 Volrath's Stronghold

4 Dark Confidant
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Qasali Pridemage
4 Tidehollow Sculler
3 Knight of the Reliquary

4 AEther Vial
4 Thoughtseize
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Vindicate
3 Sensei's Divining Top

Sideboard:
SB: 3 Gaddock Teeg
SB: 4 Leyline of the Void
SB: 3 Krosan Grip
SB: 2 Pernicious Deed
SB: 3 Engineered Plague

Discussion:

Problems:

- Current list folds to Blood Moon, Back to Basics and heavy LD.
- Some of the creatures are somewhat small and can't really bash through swarms.
- Life loss stacks quickly.

- My friend likes to play 4x Sinkholes instead of SDT and something. Playing Turn 1 Vial, Turn 2 Sinkhole, Turn 3 two creatures and Wasteland is just backbreaking

So, what's you opinion about the deck?

I've been testing pretty much this deck on and off for the past 2-ish years. It's gone through a lot of changes, but my most recent build is pretty close to yours. I haven't touched it since Alara, but here's the list I have on MWS right now:

// Lands
1 [ON] Wooded Foothills
1 [U] Bayou
1 [7E] Plains (3)
1 [ST] Forest (2)
3 [U] Scrubland
3 [ON] Flooded Strand
3 [U] Savannah
4 [REW] Wasteland
4 [ON] Windswept Heath
1 [SH] Volrath's Stronghold

// Creatures
3 [CHP] Serra Avenger
3 [LRW] Gaddock Teeg
4 [ALA] Tidehollow Sculler
4 [FUT] Tarmogoyf
4 [RAV] Dark Confidant
3 [ARB] Qasali Pridemage

// Spells
2 [CHK] Sensei's Divining Top
3 [AP] Vindicate
4 [DS] AEther Vial
4 [IA] Swords to Plowshares
4 [LRW] Thoughtseize

// Sideboard
SB: 4 [FNM] Tormod's Crypt
SB: 4 [TE] Choke
SB: 4 [PS] Orim's Chant
SB: 3 [BOK] Umezawa's Jitte

I always felt through all the time I've test it that the deck is okay-ish, but just never quite got there, and I also gave up on it for one reason or another. Knight of Reliquary seems pretty good. I hate how he's 3cc in a deck that really wants to keep Vial at 2, but another beefy creature besides Goyf can definitely go a long way, not to mention his ability to keep the mana denial going. Serra Avenger has always been pretty good in my testing; I might try to squeeze some in. In a deck with a lot of small dudes, having someone with evasion can be game-breaking.

Looks like a good-stuff creature deck... so why no MD equipment?

Maybe Engineered Explosives instead of P-Deed so you have a chance of not wiping your own board as well?

I'm just saying, this deck isn't even remotely close to Death and Taxes.

Indeed, the only disruptive creature here is Sculler. And what was the definition of DnT again? Disruption on sticks?

Indeed, the only disruptive creature here is Sculler. And what was the definition of DnT again? Disruption on sticks?Well, Pridemage is also disruption, as is Teeg in the list I posted. But this is all rather moot; despite any similarities to DnT, it's certainly its own deck.
