View Full Version : What is the best deck to play with sinkhole in a very aggro-light meta?

I'm itching to run sinkhole again, so what do you guys think. I also prefer it to be consistent but hey we can't have everything.

Team America or some twist around it is an obvious suggestion, especially if you want to beat combo. Recent Pox-Loam lists have been performing pretty well - better than TA, in fact - and they're less monotonous to play than Pikula or the mono-black lists. Check the Trisomy-21 thread in Established for a good primer on a way to build the deck.

Eva Green. It's still very good, especially in an aggro-light meta.

Honestly, Sui black. Eva-green already has focused destruction, and taking out their lands when youre sitting on (I wouldn't be) 2 or 3 Goyfs and some hate in the hand is pretty useless. I ran Sinkholes in my deck in Legacy, alongside Pillage and Stone Rain, and I found that I needed more threats and more ways to make them suffer. LD is nice, but when you topdeck a Sinkhole and lose the next turn because you have no creatures, you'll rethink that strategy.

I'm not sure if you're saying Eva Green is good or bad.

I'm not an Eva-green player, so I wouldn't know. I much prefer to pair black with blue or red. Just remember this one question. Aside from Landstill, how many times will you see a land attack for the win?

Well, I don't think this is the point of playing sinkhole. Sinkhole is a great tempo card, and going land-rit-hypnotic, land-sinkhole can still win you games. Straight LD strategies are not really viable, but gaining a few turns were your opponent is frantically searching for a land while you beat with a goyf is still great.

I attack with lands for the win all the time with Merfolk.

I'm somewhat partial to Pox if you wanna use Sinkhole.

Again, I don't understand. Eva Green attacks lands, but doesn't attack with lands. Landstill does attack with lands, so does Merfolk and a couple of other decks tend to do so. But still, I don't get your point.

Something with blue for sure so probably TA. Stifle+Waste+Sinkhole is damn sexy.

@klaus: Any suggestions/comments on the list beyond its updated deadguy+green/goyf?

I would actually play something like Red-Death in a very aggro light meta. The deck is highly underplayed and pretty damn consistent. I am biased though, I refuse to buy any more Tarmogoyfs and play them. I think this deck is itching to be played again, OR I would play that Trisomy thing. But that deck is just slow as balls as interesting as it may be.

The list above is actually pretty consistent and I enjoy playing it unless I'm facing aggro, which it tends to fold to quite often.

Regarding your meta:
Control should definitely be a favorable MU. The white splash makes it even stronger than Eva Green, too. This is due to Vindicate>Maelstorm Pulse (for obvious reasons) and Sculler - should your meta be actually reallly really aggro light I'd probably go -1 Nighthawk, + Sculler #3.

To be honest, beating a competent Combo player without "Blue" is more than tough. LD and discard just won't do the trick more often than not (with them just playing their artifact mana and easily going for your throat when having ramped up to 5 mana).
That is another pro argument for Sculler #3.

I'm not a 100% sure about that mana base, but I guess it's alright - I just don't see a reason to squeeze a non-black source in there (beyond Wasteland) unless opposing Wasteland recursion is running rampant (in which case I'd advise against Sinkhole.dec anyways).

Feel free to PM me if you wanna discuss it further!

Agreed. I play the old TA list and really like sinkholes in the deck.

@jazzykat, if you decide to play TA, I can give you a rundown of the whole deck.

OK. I'll try this simply. You have no creatures, you're at 1 life, and your opponent has a creature in play that can kill you. Now how much good is Sinkhole going to do you?

The build I have for the next tournament is something like that. Just needs more playtesting.

To both of you, take a look at Shadow Of Doubt. Anti-search can be very useful with the replacement effect.
