View Full Version : WTF is Going On With the Site?

I know, right? Please be patient. We've just upgraded to vBulletin's most current version... we were several years behind. This software is VERY new, and is still in beta. The board's style editor is brand new and is, frankly, a counterintuitive piece of shit, so it will take a few days before everything is looking exactly as it's supposed to. Thanks for your patience in the meantime.
Also, the new software required us to renew our site license, which cost me personally $175 bucks. I drop a couple hundred bucks a year out of pocket to keep the site running, and I typically don't ask for help, but in this case it's a pretty big hit all at once, so if you feel like contributing, it would be very much appreciated. My paypal account is patrick.maeder2@gmail.com. Even a few bucks can help.
This upgrade will make Account Signups much smoother using reCaptcha, and will make the site much more secure overall. Along with the software upgrade, we'll be installing Google Analytics to track site traffic, and we'll be adding a plugin for automated card linking, including mouseover images so you can see cards without having to leave the page.
All this shit takes time and effort, so thanks again for your patience. Feel free to send me a PM if you notice any problems or if you have any questions.

There's a little arrow icon next to the thread's title (looks like a fast-forward symbol). Click on that arrow icon and you'll go to the last post of the thread.
Also, my actual favorite part of the upgrade is the multi-quote ability. Now you can reply to more than one post at a time, which was a pain in the ass before.

Is there a way to make the quotes in people's signatures (like mine) smaller, so they're obviously not part of the discussion?

Wrap your card names in [/cards ] (remove the spaces), and it will look like this:

If you mouse-over the link, a popup display shows the card so you don't have to navigate away from the page. Pretty hot.

Just to reiterate for those that missed it: The site design is not finished yet. I know it looks kinda wonky at the moment. I also know that people hate and fear change. Give me a few days with it before you judge it too much. A few points on the design front:
- There is no way to implement the old site skin completely. It's impossible to transfer 3.x skins to 4.x. I will be going for the same general color scheme as the old site. Parts of it are already done, parts are not. Anything which looks steely blue is going to change to match the old purplish look.
- The icons will change also. Right now they're using the default 4.x vBulletin style.
- I'm undecided on the lighter background. A lot of people prefer the white background for friendlier at-work viewing. Others feel it's too bright. In the short term I'll probably leave the white parts white. In the long term, I'll probably create a sub-template with the same overall design but a darker background for the posts that people are used to. That way you can choose between the two based on your personal preference. Note that this will take some time because vBulletin 4.x's style editor is a clunky piece of crap.
- Someone asked about installing a few more skins to choose from. At this time that's not really an option. vBulletin 4.x is so new that no one has really created any skins for it yet. There are a few, but the ones I've seen are mostly user made and they look like shit. This may be an option at a later date.
In summary, be patient, let me make some more changes, then I'll ask for suggestions and ideas on how to improve it. Thanks for your input so far.
On another note, a few people have suggested some alternative bulletin boards systems which are free. I appreciate the input, but it's not necessary. vBulletin is expensive, but it's one of the most secure, feature-robust, well supported boards available by a wide margin. Also, migrating the existing database (which contains more than 6 years' worth of posts and user data) to a new board format would be risky and extremely work intensive. In short, vBulletin is well worth a couple hundred bucks every few years.
On that note, I want to thank everyone who has contributed so far. You guys are awesome. If you haven't contributed and want to, the Paypal account again is patrick.maeder2@gmail.com.
Thanks again everyone for your contributions and your patience.

This. I'm not prone to complaining when people do really cool stuff for me with minimal obligation on my part.
I would like to say, on the subject of design, that I just invested in a laptop with a hi-def monitor, and the brighter background gets to be a bit much if I'm on here for too long. I liked the old color scheme a lot. Again, though, just my two cents; whatever it takes to keep the forum going is fine by me.

The one thing nobody has mentioned yet is deleted posts. I really liked how discrete the old ones were. They seem really big now.
Otherwise, I'm pretty excited to see the changes. I've personally always been a fan of the darker background because it allows for lazy viewing when I wake up, the brightness kind of turned me off this morning. But honestly, I know I'll get used to it and stop bitching either way.

There's a little arrow icon next to the thread's title (looks like a fast-forward symbol). Click on that arrow icon and you'll go to the last post of the thread.
's what I was talking about, I think. Doesn't work. It only takes me to the first unread page, not to the first unread post within it. There's not even any "#post36261213513626" anchor at the end of the URL when clicking it. However, "View First Unread" within the thread itself (at the top) does work, so I'll just use that for now.
To be clear: For threads containing unread posts, there's a little circular icon with downward-pointing triangles in it next to the thread's title, with a tooltip saying "Go to first new post": that's what I'm talking about. There's also a little rectangular icon with rightward-pointing triangles in the "Last Post By" column next to the time, with "Go to last post" as the tooltip; this also does work, but is not the same thing.
lol I totally typed up a HUGE post using "Reply with Quote" and then I hit the big blue button that said " + REPLY TO THREAD" only to have the full-response page open up. Doh.
Hmm. I was going to say "use Opera", but it doesn't seem to work either in this case, probably because of the ajaxiness. But anyway, use Opera, it remembers form contents when you press the back/forward button. Have other browsers gotten around to copying that yet?

Just a suggestion, a banner change could be nice too, you could make a contest to people to design one and if they are too bad, you just keep the old one. (I'm talking about the banner on top of the page)

FWIW, the banner was updated last summer. The adepts/mods voted on their top ten cards for the banner--votes were tallied and the new banner was created. Hence, Exalted Angel and Chrome Mox out; Counterbalance and Tarmogoyf in.
Overall, I think the banner fonts need a refresh, but it's otherwise fine.

Looks weird, but nice. One thing that is inconvenient is everything is too wide/high - signatures, user info on the left side of the page, and the whole site itself. When browsing on an Opera Mini (for mobiles), about 10% on the left side is pretty much blank.
Whenever I visit this site it keeps prompting me to log in, and even if I check the box saying 'remember me' it doesn't the next time I visit. It appears you have something to adjust with the cookie or time it is set to remember users.
EDIT: Also, the user profile boxes on the left side of messages is way too big (like 2-3 inches long). If this was compressed or smaller there wouldn't be so much wasted space and scrolling in every single thread.

Let me address a few points being brought up, in no particular order:
1. With regards to an updated banner, we may do that in the nearish future, but not right now. People are terrified of and full of hatred for change, and adding one more thing on top of all this other stuff may cause theem to snap. I'm kind of fond of the old school look of the thing, but I reckon we can update it in not too long. If people want to suggest ideas for a redesign, you're welcome to do so.
2. With regards to more skins to choose from: this version of vBulletin is brand new. There are basically no custom skins for it yet. I had to make this one myself and it was a colossal pain in the balls. Once some decent ones start getting released, I'll add them as options to the site. I've spent about 20 hours in the last 3 days tweaking this skin, and I'm not in the mood to create any more at the moment.
3. Someone wanted video links on the site. It already exists:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQp5l4-sfFA
Just put a youtube link inside [video] tags, or click on the filmstrip icon in the quick reply box. Try not to make me regret this. Also, the video above is NSFW.
4. With regards to mobile phone users and their complaints about widths: the side widths are set pixel widths as opposed to percentages, which would account for why it's taking up so much space on your screens. I'll change those widths to percentages later this afternoon and that should fix the problem. That may be the issue with the user info width as well. I'll take a look at it. If you're still having problems with it tomorrow let me know.
5. Skeggi brought a minor bug to my attention: if you try to link a deck thread with brackets in it (e.g., http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?8158-[DTB]-Merfolk) using the [url] tags, the closing bracket in the thread name will break the url tag. To fix this problem, always put your links in quotes. So instead of [url=http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?8158-[DTB]-Merfolk], do [url="http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?8158-[DTB]-Merfolk"].
6. Please continue to report any bugs or concerns you have. We're still working on some final changes to the new setup, but we're getting closer to being done. Your patience and help are appreciated.

edit - Also, I'm already too lazy to look up cards if people don't use the tags so I can hover over. Is there any way to have it able to parse the MWS decklist format? A lot of people just straight copy paste.
Zilla
01-27-2010, 07:30 PM
I'll have to take a look at vBulletin's current options with regards to language censoring, but in theory we could simply have vBulletin parse any MWS tags as null characters so they just automatically disappear when posted. If not, we can talk to the guy who created the card linking plugin and see if he has the time or inclination to do that.

Speaking of signatures, a nice minor tweek would be to make the line between the unique post content and the post signature thicker. It's so thin/light at the moment it is difficult to distinguish between the two sections.

Hrm. I'm using Chrome and it works fine for me. If you right click on the link and Inspect, does the url include #XXXXXX at the end for the post number? If so, it should be jumping properly. Have you tried it on a thread where you're already on the last page?
Ugh just clicked the "reply to thread" instead of "post quick reply". Whatever, too lazy to go back and quote.
I am using firefox and some random posts just get skinny.

No post #, and yup. :( Weird.
Edit: there are no current threads for me to retry. I'll try again next time there are. But before the last post I made, I had checked the Raise, Raise Raise thread, which I am sure I just checked and it took me to the last page. Somewhere else in this thread someone mentioned the same bug. Has it always been working correctly for you, Zilla?

Well it bases your first new post based on a cookie set for the browser specifically. Have you looked at the site before in IE? If so, you probably last looked at it on page 4.
As for Chrome, we're using identical releases and builds. I haven't the faintest idea how it could be parsing the code so differently. I'll do some research on it and see what I can find, but it may take a little while. I still have a big ol' list of things I need to tweak and fix.
I can't help but wonder how much of this stuff will get fixed when vBulletin 4.x is out of beta. >.>

Funny thing... I didn't realize it was still in beta until after I spent 170 bucks on it. :<
It was the only upgrade option available, and I wouldn't have been able to get a lot of the new features implemented without something newer than the 4 year old build we were running before. C'est la vie, I guess. We'll upgrade again once it's out of beta and probably go through all this stuff again. I can't wait.

Signature fix is much, much better. Card Links are amazing-that's long been my only beef with The Source.
If I click into a forum, then click the little blue link that should jump to the first unread post, I end up on the top of the last page. If I click the View First Unread link on that page, it will then jump me to the appropriate place. I'm using the newest release of Chrome.

I have the same problem as noted earlier in this thread: some posts are like half the page before the break to the next line, others go all across the page. If I expand or reduce my browser window size, it scales both proportionately. This happens on my work computer (Windows XP? and IE 7? Maybe 8?) and home (Mac OS X and Safari 4.x). I'm home and can't remember the details of my work computer.
Like above, Phoenix Ignition's quote (of MMogg) and reply are half the size as Zilla (quoting a different post by MMogg). Weird.

I'm also noticing the differences in length that seems to be bothering some people (I use firefox), and I like the signature change, but one thing that is distressing is how I'm unable to use the search function. I have always really enjoyed finding posts about a certain card in a thread, certain posts by somebody who I think knows what they are talking about, or just searching a funny thread for a hilarious post that I remember.

First of all, props for the time, money and effort that goes into making this site awesome for all of us.
Unfortunately I do most of my Source reading while at work and our company standard browser is Internet Explorer 6, probably so that people like myself get annoyed when we try to take a break from work and read some internet and nothing is formatted correctly. I don't expect support for such a lousy and outdated browser because I'm probably the only one who is subjected to it, but I'm just throwing it out there. For what it's worth I'm experiencing the "First unread post" issue previously mentioned and the narrow first/last post on each page. I'm also dealing with a lot of stupid incompatibilities, but again, I'm chalking them up to a horribly outdated browser.
It's not supposed to look like this, right?

Oh man. I'm sorry, but IE6 is a lost cause. It's a web developer's nightmare, which will thankfully be disappearing compeltely in the next few years. Right now IE6 users comprise less than 1% of all browsers, so developers are basically ignoring its shortcomings completely.
The greyed out squares you're seeing aren't checkboxes, the .png images. They're like .gif images except they support 256 levels of transparency, so, for example, you can create a transparent drop shadow that will show the background color behind it. Unfortunately, IE6 doesn't support them at all. Basically you're seeing the site without any images at all except the logo at the top.
Unfortunately there's not much I can do for you. Is upgrading to IE7 or 8 out of the question?
As for the first post and width bugs, I'll take a look at them and see what, if anything, I can do about them.

We're a forum of nerds. No one here should be using IE6 unless they're at work or something, and if that's the case they should understand that the site's not going to function properly on such shitty, outdated software (fyi, they use IE6 where I work).

FoulQ - why can't you use the search function?
For instance, I just searched the goblins thread for "piledriver." Obviously there should be a million mentions. But, the only hits that come up are those that happen AFTER the new software was installed (as well as, oddly, the opening post by Machinus). I consider this to be a serious problem as I consider the forums as much of an archive as it is a discussion board, and this could potentially mean that threads like goblins/merfolk/zoo could become even more repititious than they already are.
The other thing that is slightly uncomfortable (but not a real problem like above) is when you search for posts by user. It used to be that as you were typing their name, their exact name would pop up as an option. So for instance, the other day I was searching for "InfamousBearAssassin" but nothing came up. That is because there is a The at the beginning of his username. With the old search function, if I had typed that up, an option right below the search box would have come up for me to select that exact user. Also, this search by user appears to follow the same flaw in that it only comes up with results of posts that have been posted since the forum change and the very opening post of the thread. (So, for example, I searched for "Machinus" in the goblins thread, and it only came up with the opening post and nothing else)

Ditto. There are fringe cards that I like to know the reason for their exclusion from a deck // format. There are discussions on several cards that I would like to re-read but the search function can't find them.

I am also experiencing the first new post issue reported earlier. I am using Firefox 3.5.
Hovering over 'Go to first new post' shows that the actual link is thread_addres&goto=new_post. Upon clicking it I am redirected to the same address as MMogg thread_addres&p=423769. I would like to note however, that the tip mentioned by Illissius on third page (using View first unread function) partially does work. Just to make it clear by 'View first undread' we are referring to the link in the actual thread, next to search functions, thread tools etc. When I am on the page with the first unread post the tooltip of that function looks exactly as Zilla mentioned thread_addres/page5#post423769 and upon clicking it I am redirected to the actual first post. However, if I am on a different page, the tooltip of 'View first undread' and its behavior is the same as the one of the 'Go to first new post' arrow in thread list.
tl;dr -> goto=new_post for some reason resolves into incorrect address of post page (&p=xxx) instead of the actual post (/pagex#postxxx) when we are not on the page with the actual post.
Now, while I understand that we will likely just have to wait for the board software developers to fix it I wonder how much control do you have over the goto=new_post function. Maybe it would be possible to change the behavior not to resolve into the wierd /pagex#postxxx format but to the standard p=xxx#post=xxx (the way 'view post' link when you quote someone works)?
Also, I am surprised that the data for first new posts is stored in cookies not on server side. I did get the feeling it was stored server-side before upgrade? I use the site both from work computer and home computer and the 'first unread' information was always correct when I switched computer.

I've been doing some reading on the vBulletin support forums, and it looks like a lot of the bugs people are experiencing are inherent in the software, which means we're simply going to have to wait for maintenance patches to fix them. Some of the problems have temporary workarounds that can be manually applied (the post width problem is one of them). I will be taking some time this weekend to go through and apply as many of these fixes as possible, and maintenance patch 4.0.2 will be released on Feb. 4, so things should improve a bit soon. I appreciate everyone's patience.
Also, we'll be starting a thread soon where people can post bugs they find, as well as provide suggestions on other ways we can further improve the site, be it software, design, or organization related. I'm going to wait until after the weekend's updates to start this in order to avoid redundancy.
As a side note, screenshots which illustrate bugs you're experiencing are very helpful in attempting to fix the problem, particularly with display issues. Thanks.
EDIT: The post width bug should be fixed. If someone who's been experiencing this problem can confirm or deny, that'd be great.
EDIT 2: the broken quote linkbacks and the broken Last Unread Post links are both known issues (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/project.php?issueid=35213) in 4.0.1, and there are currently no workarounds. We're going to have to wait for a patch to fix these issues, unfortunately.

Quoting Zilla in the Mod Lounge: "The site was down because our host had to replace a faulty hard drive in our server. It was emergency maintenance, totally unrelated to the new software upgrade. The following sluggishness was a result of the following RAID backup, which hogged much of the server's I/O capacity."

Says differently.
To be fair, those statistics are only for w3schools.com, note how rediculously high FF is.
Also this:
These facts indicate that the browser figures above are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is used by at least 80% of the users.
IE6 usage has thankfully been slowly decreasing, at the college I work at (as the web developer), we've seen it drop from 11% of our traffic to about 6% in the last year.
Unfortunately we're not comfortable abandoning support for it until it reaches the 1-3% range. Hopefully this happens before the 2014 "no longer supported date" that microsoft set... but until then my CSS will be riddled with hacks D:.
In other news:
Potential bug: I've had problems staying logged-in lately, it appears as though it only keeps my session when I'm on the homepage, or if I navigate back to the homepage after logging in somewhere else. If I do log-in somewhere else it seems to log-in fine (log-in page>redirect, no incorrect information or anything), but it doesn't actually give me access until I go back to home.
