UPDATE***In reflection of the current market for single cards, the prizes structure has changed in order to better reward the top players. Top 4 will have an additional pick on top of the lotus/mox prize. Top 8 players will now only have one pick from the top 8 pool and will pick before the top 4 players receive their second pick. This is to avoid 5th place potentiality being rewarded more than first place. Thank you for understanding and we hope to see you there!*** Don't forget about the GPT on Sunday for only $10 if you play in the Lotus event. Feel free to email me if you're looking for a hotel to stay, there's a strip not too far from the mall - 5 mins drive.

Well that looks pretty nutty, awesome.

So how are the picks for prizes going to work? Do you only get the one playset? How is there a remainder?

Gulkahn
01-28-2010, 05:30 PM
5th - 8th earn 2 choices in their category.

Each play set is one pick, there will be remainders from above brackets. Basically its designed to give those players first choices of the better stuff. Any remaining choices will be available to the next category of players.

example
1st place, lotus
2nd sapphire
3rd jet
4th emerald
5th goyfs, tiagas
6th undergrounds, forces
7th tundras, bayous
8th LED's, trops

all remaining "top 8 prize pool choices" move down to top 16 players.
so the pool would now be:
4x stifle
4x bloodstained mire
4x flooded strand
4x polluted delta
4x windswept heath
4x wooded foothills
4x arid mesa
4x misty rainforest
4x marsh flats
4x scalding tarn
4x verdant catacombs
Plus:
4x badlands
4x plateau
4x scrubland
4x savannah
4x volcanic island

So top 16 still have some choices of duals/remaining choices.

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

I hate to be that guy, but I have another question: are the Lotus/Moxens Alpha, Beta, or Unlimited?

If Unlimited, 5th-8th place is potentially worth more/the same as 2nd-4th. If that's the case might I suggest giving 1-4 a second pick after 5-8 but before Top 16...?

Gulkahn
01-28-2010, 06:40 PM
Yes, they will be unlimited. Thank your for the suggestion about additional choices, i will consider it in the future.

5th will get 1st and 5th pick
6th will get 2nd and 6th
7th will get 3rd and 7th
8th will get 4th and 8th

The cut 32 cutoff seems odd. So is it 5/6 rounds then cut and 5 more rounds or how does that work out? Seeing as this is in the same area as Jupiter Games with a great prize support across the field a comparably turnout should at least be expected, so I'm marking my calender. I would also look forward to seeing Eli sling some Legacy spells.

I'll be there slinging spells I can promise you that =). My last tournament with comparable prizes to this one had about 172 people and that was at the beginning of the legacy explosion, I bet you this tournament see's upwards of 150 easy.

This is also a great opportunity for P.t.G. to get on the good side of players with the format gaining popularity. It'll be at the new location, so this is a good way to start fresh.

Take this opportunity Rob to really make folks happy. Granted, the prizes are great, but cordiality will go a long way in determining attendance for future events. I'll definitely be there.

I'm really excited for this event. And since the normal 70+ PTG tournament is run at five rounds, prizes by top eight standings, this one will probably be done (with a realistic starting time of 1 or 2 PM) by six thirty at the latest. Dinner at chili's and the Virginians can be on their way home by eight.

Well assuming none of your team makes the top 32, your plan sounds like it would work great! But I wouldn't suggest going to Chili's, since your collective asshole is already burning from being raped at Magic. =P

Seriously, the first post mentions that there will be 4 individual playoffs to determine the top 32 spots with prize drafting afterwards, so if 1 guy in your car makes it everyone has to wait around for 3 untimed rounds and prize drafting before you can leave. Adjust your plans accordingly.

Zach Tartell
03-25-2010, 01:59 PM
Clearly you've never been to an event at PTG. The staff is so kind that they'll speed along the tournament, without consulting judges or players. Some might complain that it appears to be for the staff's personal gain, but I for one enjoy a tournament one, two, or even three rounds shorter than it should be.

And don't even get me started on PTG's radical prize structure. They're so interested in promoting the format that they reward players who didn't even make the top eight! For instance, at the last big event they hosted third through eighth got packs (third and fourth getting a box, and in varying degrees of lower prizes from there on). And ninth and tenth place? Mana Drains! Isn't that clutch? I hope that more stores adopt this progressive way of giving out prizes.

Also, go fuck yourself. Chili's is the only place that I've ever seen a waitress stare blank-eyed and open-mouthed while Friendly Phil Stolze put other's orders on the stack and got his down first. Which was a classic move.

hahah just playing dude.

I guess it depends...the biggest tournaments I've been to were at Jupiter Games, so the size is likely comparable. But with playoffs, you can't expect a huge tournament that starts at 1 PM to be over at 6:30. And I'm not complaining about the prizes, I think they're awesome and I'm excited for them.

Having that many seperate playoffs seems ... absurd to say the least time wise. Everyone has to wait for people before them to finish to properly draft prizes? Seems especially odd given sanctioned/competitive REL event.

Will not be in attendance for this one. Am looking forward to good reviews from people who go to sway me to show up in the future.

Well, seeing as the prizes trickle down who knows what is going to get picked by the top 8? The way it looks several non-blue duals will drop to 9th place so what if the 9th place guy grabs a Badlands and leaves, sticking the guy who finishes 7th and needs them to not be offered the choice. I guess he could make a deal for them with 9th but we can assume if they're going to pick early, they're trying to leave early as well so trading won't work.

If they cut to top 8 and do standings for 9-32, it's still 3 rounds, and the playoffs are independent of each other, so if the finals finish before the lower brackets, they can start the prize drafting and leave.

Also, the other alternative is a top 32 playoff, which is 5 extra rounds and would almost certainly take longer than 4 individual 3-round brackets.

I have another solution which is what I do at my tournaments. The store offers to buy anyones picks in the draft, I believe at the last event the buyout rate was $130 or if they were only getting 1 pick they could choose the booster box option. This way the players could leave as soon as playoffs start if their not in them.

There are pics available of some of the cards on our website and if anyone drops in too the store the whole deck is laid out amongst the other alters in its own display case.

I think that's what the [bragging] pimp legacy deck thread is for.

Also, congrats on the finish Eli, I am glad to see Landstill top 8 in a big event again. Landstill definitely deserves to be a DTB again.

How was the GPT? Any chance of lists/standings/reports on Carousel Center's surprisingly plentiful mall ass?
