=====DIRECTIONS=====
Also, some directions for parking / etc.
On the campus map, you'll see the "U" Parking Lot on the southside of campus, right near Building 12, that's the best place to park, and you can park anywhere in the lot because it'll be the weekend.
As for entering RIT's campus, if you're coming down Jefferson Road, towards RIT, turn left onto John Street, which is the light at the corner with the new Barnes and Noble, or, if you're coming from the other direction, turn right obviously. (Turn SOUTH onto John St.)
Once you're heading south on John St. take a right at the first stop light you get to, which will bring you into RIT's campus. At the end of that road is a three-way stop where you'll turn left and then take that road all the way to the next stop sign, turning right and then making a right into U lot.

Hope this helps, it's always confusing to get places on a college campus..

This would be awesome if it were 2 hours closer to my house. Vestal is almost 3 hours away and we're going there semi-frequently, I guess, but this place is almost 5 hours. =/

Is it possible you could get a L1 judge and sanction these (assuming you consistently get 8+ players)?
Also, are you able to give break-downs of payouts at:
10 players
20 players
30 players?

The events will be sanctioned. We don't have a level 1 judge (yet), but that's not required for sanctioning.
Also, are you able to give break-downs of payouts at:
10 players
20 players
30 players?
10 players: $45/25/15/15 (1st/2nd/3rd/4th places)
20 players: $55/35/25/25/15/15/15/15
30 players: $70/50/35/35/20/20/20/20/15/15 (top 8 play out, 9th and 10th get prizes based on their standings in the swiss)
We're using Starcity's prices as a starting point for valuing the cards in the prize pool. For example, with 10 players, first place gets a volcanic island or something else of the same value. With 30 players, they can get an underground sea.

Hey everyone, just figured I'd post here and update everyone on the tournament! It went well, we had a nice amount of people show up, someone went home with a dual land, and everyone had a good time.
The next tournament is March 6th, same time, same place!
Hope to see some of you guys out there!
Enjoy the week everybody

This is a great tournament. You can pick what you want your prize to be based on your top 4 spot. It's very flexible!
But don't expect to win if you play me, I'm the reigning champ.

Quick question, about how long have these been going until? I'm assuming you're getting around as many people as Millenium so my guess would be around 4-5ish but I figured I'd check quick anyways. Pending on when the next one is I'll see if I can try organizing my group to come give it a shot. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Curtis M.

The RIT one's have been going on since Feb. 20, this year. I don't know how long Millenium's has been going on.

4-5ish sounds about right. We start right at noon, there isn't much messing around between rounds, and people haven't gone to time that much. Figure 45 minutes average per round, so 3 hours for the swiss portion and 1 hour 30 minutes for top 4 to play out, puts us at 4:30. Our turnout has been smaller than Millennium's thus far (13, 10, and 12 for the three we've run), so that's part of why things move more quickly, but we're also able to focus all of our attention on running the tournament, where the Millennium guys have to run a store as well.

We will be offering $5 credit for tourney reports. First person to show up and sign up gets it. We will offer 1 spot for tourney reports per 10 people. No one wants to read 3 reports on a 10 man tourney right?

Top8 From last weekend:
Zoo
MUC
Merfolk
Belcher
Dredge
Dredge
Team America
GW homebrew
Note: fairly cheap decks in the top8 it seems like our "expensive" decks aren't fairing that well. Seems strange watching the $200 or less decks dominate.
Also: We are collecting oppinions on summer tournaments.
Our options are pretty wide open. It will probably be a slightly smaller group assuming we don't continue growing. Things that have been suggested:
Go to weekly @ $5 and $10 alternating. This is due to the cost for those without summer jobs who still want to come out and play.
Another alternative is $5 weekly and 2-3 big summer tournies @ $25 each with equally large prizes. (lotus, moxen, cash, playsets of duals, etc)
Another alternative is to have $10 tourney every week and not worry about it.
Another alternative is to run prizeless free tournies on off weeks. These would be sanctioned with no entry and no prize support.
Another suggestion is to organize ordering pizza ahead of time each week, so we can have good food cheap for everyone.
Thoughts?

Still $10 for now. We figured prizes would be too small at $5.
EDIT: We're open to feedback about other ways of running them, we're just going with $10 as the default for now.

These tournaments have been bumped up to weekly. There may be a few cancellations due to Jupiter games tournaments and the Grand Prix. Stay posted via text message. If you want to receive updates via text message me and I will add your # to our list.
If you ever decide to cancel one, you should post it here too if you can manage.

As feared, we will need to cancel the tournament June 26th.
For your legacy needs, there is a Marvelous Jupiter games tournament that same day.
Also, Sunday, at both millenium games and Jupiter games there are GPT tournaments.

Just a heads up: These tournies are cancelled for the weekends of 7/24 and 7/31. A large portion of our players will be @ vestal or at GP Columbus these weekends. If you need rides or are interested in going to either of these tournies please message me.

Hey all, I think the first mid-size event at RIT went off pretty well. We had a few hiccups: a repair and a 10 minute delay after round 3. Those blatant mistakes have been noted and should not be a problem in the future. Then again, I suppose it went well enough time-wise. 6 rds of swiss, starting player meeting at 11 + 30 minutes for lunch. finished round 6 at 5:45 pm.
If you have any complaints, I want to hear them. Unlike many local card shops we are happy to change how we do things to better suit the public. Thoughts on prizes? On buyback prices? Finding the place? Was it well organized? Was it timely? Was the cafeteria food suitable? Etc etc etc
Its not trolling if I am literally asking for it.
ASIDE: there will be a $10 Draft Friday the 24th @ RIT. This is to test the waters for possibly FNMS.

The best questions I have received plus answers:
1) I know where RIT is, and saw the google-maps link for what building the tournament is in, but where is the best (read: free) place to park closest to the building for a non-student?
1) Parking is free on the weekends. The easiest to find is U-lot directly across from building 12. However, if you want to take a less direct route that will save you 200ish feet, R lot is tucked behind the building but requires passing the building and then turning around to get there, as well as entering from the read (which is unmarked).
Feel free to text me if you get lost. Its a common thing and there are plenty of RIT kids that can go find you
2) How competitive is the scene? I've barely ever played legacy before, let alone compete in a tournament. I only just recently built a deck by trading cards on the forums here. Before, I typically played T2/EDH in my old scene in Newark, DE. I guess what I'm getting at is 'Does everybody come with Full out $500-$1000 decks? Or could a somewhat budget deck do reasonably well (My deck is missing 7 cards from the ideal lists in the forums here, but its still a Tier 1 deck)
2) 7 cards off of a tier 1 deck is better than most. But, its a good mix. The prize structure itself is pretty flat (top 40% get prizes). But, a lot of the older (grad school+) players are regulars so so moats, tabernacles, imperial recruiters, and grim tutors are not unheard of. There is a large amount of lending that goes on, as well and I personally keep a spare dredge deck handy to lend to people just in case. Cabal_chan tracks the meta pretty well.
The most succesful decks have been: next level thresh (URG thresh with jace and no mongoose) dredge, burn, and belcher)
I personally play a fairly budget MUC deck to reasonable finishes when someone else head judges for the day.
3) How long do tournaments typically run? (# of rounds/time etc..)
3) We start promptly at Noon. You should be there at 11:30 on average. 4-5 rds takes 3.5-4.5 hours. We have switched to EDH as early as 3:30. Usually, I would say- set aside til 4:30, 5ish. The top 4/8 plays out maybe 50% of the time and that usually adds two hours. Players tend to be pretty respectful of serious time restraints and i reserve the right to force a topX split if there are time concerns. It has never come up- and probably never will.
4) Are side events hosted for those who scrub out early?
4) I have nearly infinite packs right now (9 boxes) so sometimes people draft. Usually, though EDH, pack wars, and trading is the norm. EDH tends to be casual but powerful. People tend to frown on dedicated combo decks, but if you want to play with time twister, grim tutor, and moat- no one will blink an eye.
Enough of the crowd is competitive/or judges that we cancel events for other large regional events.

Congrats to the 5k and GP competitors that did well.
Also, the prize pool now has > 20 judge foils to select from.
December/January Schedule will be posted when I get my job in order.
