In this week's column on Planet MTG I begin to take a look on the metagame for the upcoming tournament: Grand Prix Madrid. The article is the first one of a series of three over the next weeks leading to the GP. Now if you can't understand german there is bad news and good news for you.

Bad News: It is in fact written in german.

Good News: All articles will feature sample decklists for the Decks to Beat, established decks and new/upcoming decks. These lists are not just taken from deckcheck or are my personal decklists but should, in most cases represent the most common/focused lists to test with including sideboards for an unknown metagame.

That's the first Bloodghast Dredge build I have liked. I'm tempted to get them now. Dammit...

QFT.

Pretty much the best legacy-related article of this kind (format overview/tournament preparation) I read in a long time.

The second article just went live. This time I'm taking a look at some of the established decks beyond Tier 1.

That Dredge list is "meh," cutting Golgari Thug for a 2nd Dakmor Salvage and Darkblast makes little to no sense, the difference between dredging for 4 and dredging for 3 or god forbid 2 over time is tremendous and it reduces the black creatures for Ichorid. Golgari Thug is pivotal game 2, where having X+ dredgers makes or breaks your ability to play thru' Tormod's Crypt and co. Also, 4 Putrid Imp and 3 Tireless Tribe is pretty much worse than 4 Tireless Tribe and 3 Putrid Imp, the blocker vs Tarmogoyf is ridiculous.

I was thinking the same thing. Going below 11 dredgers with an unproven decklist is a bad idea. The tribes vs imps are different issue, depends on how much aggro there is versus how many black sources you want for unmask/ichorid, especially when you're taking out thugs which is a terrible idea.

I've been experimenting with Darkblast. It barely dredges, but I'm not convinced Dredge 3 is much worse than Dredge 4. The big selling point to me is that you can cast it against blue decks; it's an uncounterable outlet.

@ Bant Survival List: Is the Taiga MD an error? I don't see any use for it. Well except for hardcasting Squee, but is this the intention for the Taiga?

@Dredge: Darkblast is nice against some decks but I use it in the lategame to kill my Bloodghasts mostly. Still I sometimes cut it and a Study for 2 Thugs. 2 Dakmor Salvages however are necessary as you sometimes need one early. I tested/played one and it was terrible as I rarely had it in my grave when I needed it.

@Bant Survival: Yes Taiga is for Squee as it is no problem to run it in the mana base and Squee as eternal blocker can win games by buying enough time to find business spells.

That seems kind of terrible, honestly. If you've got the mana to hardcast Squee as a chump, you've got the mana to dump him to Survival up a Goyf, which will probably live through whatever is attacking in the first place.

Well, do you really think people would hardcast a Squee with Survival out? Unfortunately you don't have the enchantment sometimes or it is needled or destroyed and you end up with a Squee you drew or survivaled before. The goblin is not a dead handcard in these cases but acts like an expensive Mace of Ith, better than nothing.

Interesting Lands list, where did you get it from? Do play it yourself? It looks similiar to my list.

All the lists in the articles are my test lists. They should represent lists you can encounter at a tournament.

But if I would play lands I think I would use this list with a Worm Harvest squeezed into it. You usually don't need it to win but it is often much faster than the otherwise somewhat drawn out games.
