View Full Version : Weeekly Columbus Ohio legacy tournaments begin Wednesday, 17 Feb 6pm ComicTown Morse
Media314r8
02-11-2010, 11:29 AM
Attention: Weeekly Columbus legacy tournaments begin Wednesday, 17 February at 6pm.
Entree fee: $5.
Tournament Structure: Swiss by standings (no cut to top 8 per interest in people working/going to school in the morning)
Prize payout: top 25% of players after standing receive combined entry fees in store credit. (store credit can be used for future tournament entree)
Location: Comic Town 1249 Morse Rd. Columbus, OH 43229
These tournaments will be 30 proxy initially, and will thus not be sanctioned. This is to allow newer players or players unsure of what to bring to GP:Columbus the opportunity to get tournament play with developmental decks. This also expands our legacy crowd by easing newcomers into the format rather than insist everyone borrow/buy $300-$1000 decks to participate.
Every month we will lower the number of allowed proxies culminating with the Columbus GP: post GP, we will expect our players to have fully built decks should they still be playing, and will thus begin sanctioning.
February: 30 proxies
March: 25 proxies
April: 20 proxies
May: 15 proxies
June: 10 proxies
July: 5 proxies
-Grand Prix Columbus!!!-
August on: No proxies: weekly sanctioned legacy!
The benefit of having non-sanctioned tournaments is it encourages people to stray away from 'safe' tier one decks they've been playing forever and try out new, rogue, or international (I hear nourishing lich is huge in Germany) decks.
Larger no-proxy, cash entry - cash prize events are in the works and will likely occur before the GP, and would probably be on a Sunday. Details on that to follow.
Proxy Rules: (standard rules courtesy of StarCityGames.com)
There are two types of acceptable proxies for use in the Star City Games Power 9 tournament series. The first and most basic is taking a basic land card and writing the details of the card on it. The second method is to take a card that shares some of the characteristics with the card that is being proxied and erase any characteristics that do not match, replacing them with the correct characteristics.
All proxies must have the following text neatly printed, using a extra fine point sharpie. Ball point pens may not be used:
• The full name of the card (no abbreviations or nicknames)
• Correct casting cost of the card including all colored mana symbols
• All relevant/game effecting text
When choosing what card to use as the base for an erased proxy players must follow these rules:
• The mana cost of the base spell must be the same as the card being proxied.
• The type of the card being proxied must be the same as the base card.
• The P/T of a creature being proxied must be the same as the base creature P/T
• When proxying a creature it may be difficult to find a creature where all characteristics match. In this case, mana cost is the most important, followed by the P/T, followed by the subtype. Any characteristics that do not match must be erased and corrected.
• The art box, card name, and text box must be totally erased. White out may not be used for this as it affects the stiffness of the card and may mark it.
• When adding text to the card do not use a ball point pen. A extra fine point sharpie is the best thing to use. A ball point pen can cause indentations on the card marking it.
• For clarity reasons, the use of cards with the new card frame is strongly encouraged
Examples:
• Welding Jar or Spellbook can be used for a Mox or Black Lotus
• Disarm could be used for an Ancestral Recall
• Train of Thought for a Time Walk
• Counsel of the Soratami for a Timetwister.
How to Erase a Card:
Acetone and a cotton ball or q-tip works well, as does a pencil/ink eraser (the white/grey split type) using the grey side. Before erasing the card, take masking tape and tape off all the areas that you don't want erased for a clean edge. It will take time, but it will come off.

Wow, 6 PM, really? I can make it at 6:15 or 6:30, but no way I could trek across town and make a 6 PM tournament without taking time off of work. Guess I'm out :frown:

We'll get some feedback on start time after this first Wednesday. Mark Walker and Korijo have both said that they could make 6:30 but not 6. The start time was planned in an effort to ensure DJ (the store owner and TO) actually gets some sleep Wednesdays, but if will increase the draw of players, a half hour can probably be sacrificed. At the same time, we don't want to just keep pushing the time back else we start ending too late for school/work-going individuals to attend.

We will be starting at 6:30 this week, and tentatively, in weeks to come. This will allow three additional people to play immediately, so our bedtimes will suffer a bit for the greater good. Let's break 16 this week!

Awesome, I know we have at least 2 more participants (Mark Walker & Jordan Welzbacher) coming tonight, which pushes us a little closer to the goal. I'll post this on MTGS in case we can maybe wrangle in a few more.

I'm making a concerted effort to be there tonight, if only to encourage the stellar efforts of DJ and the crew to serve the community's needs and their own simultaneously. Same principle behind buying those pad-pen-dice-sleeve packs every draft :P

We had twelve again Wednesday - The top 3 were:
1st: Me, with BG Dora Rock
2nd: Rick with burn (maindeck flambreaks were gravy against the three merfolk decks there)
3rd: ??? with Merfolk
Korijo and Smenedian were unable to make it out today- hopefully we will get 16 next week when everyone is able to be there.

Chris - Merfolk.

Also, can we change the thread title? The events have been starting at 6:30 to allow more people to come.

We had sixteen this week, I'm glad to have so many players so regularly. The meta mixed it up this week with a whopping 3 (!!!) charlbelcher decks showing up. The top three were:
1st: Me with GW goodstuff
2nd: Jordan with Bant survival with Iona + Retainers
3rd: ?
I played a deck I had made and modified for a friend who hates counterspells:
// Lands
4 [ON] Wooded Foothills
4 [US] Forest (3)
1 [US] Plains (3)
4 [ON] Windswept Heath
4 [R] Savannah
4 [ZEN] Oran-Rief, the Vastwood
// Creatures
4 [CFX] Noble Hierarch
4 [FUT] Tarmogoyf
4 [SHM] Vexing Shusher
4 [WWK] Stoneforge Mystic
4 [WWK] Leatherback Baloth
4 [ARB] Qasali Pridemage
3 [LRW] Gaddock Teeg
4 [SHM] Kitchen Finks
// Spells
2 [BOK] Umezawa's Jitte
1 [DS] Sword of Fire and Ice
4 [R] Swords to Plowshares
1 [DS] Sword of Light and Shadow
// Sideboard
SB: 4 [ALA] Relic of Progenitus
SB: 4 [ZEN] Mindbreak Trap
SB: 3 [WL] Aura of Silence
SB: 4 [FUT] Aven Mindcensor
MUs:
Round 1 vs Matt with Bant CB Survival (no iona)
Game one went to me with fast beats, lost game two to me mullign to five followed by a quick survival, game three I rode a SoFI-equipped minsensor to victory while he found one hierarch via survival in four peeks at the top 4.
Round 2 vs Belcher
Game one I mull to six, and don't have the teeg. Games two and three I mull into mindbreak trap and pound him with big doods after he goes all in.
Round 3 vs Burn (w lavamancer and ensnaring bridge)
Game one I cannot overcome an early bridge despite the four pridmages, four finks in the main. Game two auras blow up his bridges and jitte-carrying baloths bring it home.
Round 4 vs Pox
He is on the play game one, so instead of me going T1 hierarch, T2 finks with oran rief in hand, he rit-hymns, smallpoxes me on his turn two. Sadcakes.
Game two I make many doods and a pridemage takes it home on an empty board while we're both in topdeck mode.
Game three he mulls and I have finks and several fellas with relics to keep tombstalkers, nether spirit, and crucible from working.

We had a small turnout this week (number? couldn't have been bigger than 16, 4 rounds of Swiss)
Harrison (arcboundravager2) and I split the finals, he was playing Enchantress and I was playing UGw Thresh. Eric (Media314r8) came in third with Lands, losing only to Harrison (love you buddy). Not sure who was fourth.

I would like to know as well. I've been screwed by work and haven't been there the past couple of weeks. I know a couple of new horizon decks surfaced this week. One of the New Horizon decks went 1-2 beating the mirror, then loosing to merfolk and u/w control running humility.
If anyone has tops of the past couple weeks post em,
Thanx!

Two weeks ago (April 28th, I think) Harrison and I split the win (4 rounds, ~14 players). I was playing BUg Reanimator and he had Quinn. I don't recall who took 3rd or 4th, though. I wasn't able to make it this week either, so I'm not sure what went on there.

Merfolk was rampant last week. I was the mirror player, losing to Aaron, beating 2 Merfolk in a row, then losing to Menendian with Lands.
There hasn't been a lot people showing up, which is disappointing being the host city for the GP.

agreed! still with 4 rounds it had to be 16 or so people wasn't it?
I'm going to be back Wed for sure, and I''m going to talk to a few people to see if I can get some more to come. One of my friends is interested in trying to play DragonStompny in Legacy, and I think Naughy Kobolds guy finally has gotten work arranged around where he'll have wed's off from now on...
Our meta has always been rich and diverse so I guess combo kobohlds and dragonstompy can only add to it. BTW how many proxies are we at now? I need to know so I can start looking for stuff to get the dragonstompy deck under the limit!

I believe 15; check with Eric/maybe DJ to confirm this.
4 rounds implies 16 or less. 16+ will push it to 5 rounds, which I don't think we've had for a while.

I'm hoping to get back up there soon; today looks like a no-go, though. Work and school have got me by the balls, of late. I ran The Gate the last time I was up and went 1-3, helped along by many, many mulligans and some crappy topdecking skills. :(
If anyone is looking to play Dragon Stompy, I've literally got the entire deck for sale, including Sloggers, that red guy who poops out dudes when they attack, etc. Let me know. I'll be content never to run that damn deck again, thank you :)

The GPT at Comic Town tomorrow (19th) has just been cancelled, guys.
The Midwest Master Series is in town and a Level 1 Judge could not be found for the event. Unfortunately, as I was looking forward to this, but it looks like if we want to get our GPT's on, we'll have to go elsewhere.

Just wanted to provide an update on the weekly tournaments.(Eric if you read this please change the title of the post if possible).
The legacy tournaments have been moved from Wed. to Sundsay. I will get confirmation on a start time(I'm guessing 1 or 2pm). I of all people(wife's only day off really is Sunday so that's usually couple time...) know how complicated and difficult it may be to try and have good turnouts to these events but I do think we at least have to try.
Hope to see a good turnout in the future. With July 4th being next Sunday I don't expect a turnout but would love to see everyone back on July 11th!!!

It's 1 PM, Will. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make these, interferes too much with work (applies to me and a few more). Moving Legacy to Sunday to interfere with not only weekend events but out of the leisure of a weeknight was a bad move, I know what the ultimate motivation behind it was, and I'm disappointed.

Very rarely do I flip out like I did, but losing the way you did and having him stabilize at 1 life was pretty frustrating, especially considering what the board state was at one point. At least you learned never to cast PtE at sorcery speed.
I also don't like to drop at 2-1, but my matchups with Jake and Harrison were atrocious and I was glad they wound up getting 3rd and 4th.

Sanctioning and going back to Wednesday seem to be revitalizing the meta, get in and game on, hopefuly our sanctioned legacy will motivate Smenendian to plan another meandeck. It's been what, 3 months?
Fauna shaman was insane for me in elf survival BTW, currently a 2-of, but likely bumping all but 1 joraga warcaller out to become a 4-of. Combo killed twice, elf beat-down a few times, and survival advantage for multiples lords got there mostly. A one-of qasali pridemage was insane as a plague/jitte tutorable disenchant, especially against plagues post-board when combined with the SB genesis. The meta was full of combo last week, likely packing more than 1 teeg in the board for next week should I play with green men again.

I brought in the full 15 against enchantress, super misty that aura of silence kept me off 13 of 15 of my hate cards. Ratchet bomb was gas the round I played it, and I was excited to have an answer to Jace TMS in mono-black. Culling scales were gravy all night, killing a sulferic vortex one game against zoo, two goyfs and a sylvan library another, and survival and a half million elves against elf survival.
I'd post a list, but it isn't on this compy, I may be back to post one, only wincons were attacking with gatekeepers, 4 factory, 1 gargolye caste. (with 3 crucible) 2 abyss main.

13 players tonight. As far as the last few weeks are concerned, I'm going to have to say that blue control is dead in our shop's metagame.
Don't be so sure, I'm going to break that meta wide open with a control deck eventually... Even if I have to spend hundreds of dollars buying tabernacle, etc... to freaking do it.... Seriously what else am I going to spend the money on? My wife christmas presents or something.... Hell no, cardboard crack FTW!!!

Yet another non-mana producing land in "BitterStill" will make it even more unstable than it is already, since I'm sure you will cut a mana producing land in order to play it. No thanks. Money doesn't solve bad matchups as much as everyone likes (to think so).

did it ever occur to u I wasn't talking about bitterstill.
Bitterstill only has a few changes I can make currently(mainly because of the meta shift) and you will (or at least should be) happy about them. I'm thinking that wasteland is no longer nearly as effective in this meta as it once was and I think bitterstill should be modified to not run wasteland right now...
And wait for it.... you should be proud of me cause i think 4x wastelands become 1x swamp, 1x plains, 1x more island to go to 2x, and then 1x more scrubland to go to 2. Or maybe that extra island because a 3rd maze of ith, haven't decided that part yet, but I think the waste lands got to go at this point!
When u hear me talk about dropping large sums of money automatically assume I'm talking about things like 4x exploration, tabernacle, karakas, 4x the abyss, etc...

Hey, I only run 2x the abyss, 4 would just make for mulligans with double-four costs in my hand next to a smallpox.
Also, have you considered a one-of urborg to make all of your non-mana producing lands occasionally tap for mana? Probably better than the one-of swamp.

An Update. We have started doing Legacy again at Comic Town!!
The tournament is going to be Sundays at Noon. This week there were 6 .
2 esper blade
1 goblin charbelcher
1 Affinity
1 Bant
1 Maverick
Not sure on the placing.
Also is there any way that we could edit the main post to reflect the schedule change to Sundays at Noon. Mark, do you think it would be easier to get it changed or just start a new thread?

It would probably be easier to start a new thread.
Eric doesn't even log on anymore, dude.
I'm leaving Columbus in less than a week, so:
1) Contact a Mod to close this one.
2) Start a new thread.
3) Format it well so I don't have to slap you.
