I'm playing against a Dredge player.

- Can I sacrifice my Burrenton Forge-Tender without choosing a red source of damage to prevent? (more like, can I sacrifice my BFT whenever I want?)
- I have a Jotun Grunt removed from the game with Parallax Wave. At the beginning of my upkeep, Wave goes to the graveyard. Do I have to pay Jotun Grunt's upkeep for the current turn?

1. Yes. BFT's ability does not target, so you will choose a source on the resolution of the ability. If there are no legal sources at that time, you just don't make any choice.

2. No. Jötun Grunt must be on the battlefield already at the beginning of your upkeep for its cumulative upkeep to trigger.

Sorry for necroing this thread, but seeing that Reanimator has won the GP it is now considered fashion to do so.

My question isn't directly related to Dredge, instead it is related to Burrenton Forge-Tender***: can I use it to prevent the damage from an attacking Progenitus?

***I already asked something about BFT, so I think it's reasonable to not open a separate thread just for this simple question.

Yes, you can (as you can with Circle of Protection: Anything). Protection prevents four things: Damage, Enchanting/Equipping, Blocking and Targetting (DEBT). BFT or CoP don't target, they just instruct you to choose a red source of damage. Progenitus is a legal choice.
