At starcitygames front page twitter there was mention of confusion over Karakas and that it only hits Legendary creatures. Looking at the card text, it appears it could be argued that it would bounce any legendary permanent.

Any insight on this? Should it be errata'd so it can bounce legendary lands and Jitte? This post is not so much seeking rules solving, but I guess rules interpretation on a card.

Edit:

Card text: TAP: Add W to your mana pool
TAP: Return target legend to owner's hand; enchantments on target legend are destroyed.

Oracle text: Tap: Add W to your mana pool.
Tap: Return target legendary creature to its owner's hand.

It's my understanding that Karakas was printed with the intention of only ever returning creatures as the only legends at the time were creatures and lands (I'm not sure if it ever was officially able to return lands).

But when that changed they errata'd Karakas to specify.

Before Kamigawa, "Legend" was a creature subtype, whereas every other permanent type used "Legendary X" just like it does today. Therefore, "Legend" on Karakas could only refer to a creature.

Perfect explanation. Flawless victory.

There was a time not long ago when Karakas could target any legend, including itself. Rather recently, it was changed to affect only legendary creatures. It seems a little unfair, especially since Karakas decks were starting to become quite popular. However, it makes sense on account of the fact that when Karakas was printed and all the way until Kamigawa, it could only affect creatures.
