The reserve list. Yep. I won't go into details you've read a thousand times.
So what if Wizards had something lame, like a points system for FNM/Event wins, which you could use to exchange for crappy versions of old, hard-to-find cards?
Look at it this way: if you would normally get a pack of cards at your LGS for a win (I know you usually get a lot more, just bear with me), you would instead get points (herein referred to as "Loyalty", since Wizards would make it something lame like that) that could be used to exchange for these versions? I mean like, new frame, white border crappy. If you would get a pack ($4 usually) you would instead get so many of these Loyalty points, which could be spent on the Wizards website for packs or reprint singles or boxed sets or whatever. This leaves a relatively easy method of scoring a Lotus (if it's 1000 points then people won't be sinking the prices of their old Lotuses very much, if a point is analogous to a dollar) or whatever Dual you need. Market stays where it is, and most people are happy. It even leaves more stock for store owners to sell. It also makes your DCI number more than just something to accidentally write down as your SSN on a job application.

Doesn't this idea still entail reprinting cards?
The new policy says they won't reprint cards. Ever. For any reason.

but if the point is to keep the prices down then wouldn't this be easier?

Some stupid reserve list solutions:
Purple People Killer :b::b:1
Creature - Eternal Zombie
Protection from white.
Spend only mana produced by basic lands to cast Purple People Killer. Purple People killer gets +1/+2 if opponent has any green cards in play. Purple People Killer gets +2/+1 if opponent has any non-basic Forest in play.
3/3
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Great Balls of Fire :r::r:1
Creature - Eternal Elemental
Trample, Haste
Spend only mana produced by basic lands to cast Great Balls of Fire. At the beginning of the end step sacrifice Great Balls of Fire. If Great Balls of Fire is in your graveyard you may return it to play at the beginning of your upkeep if the opponent has any non-basic Islands in play.
6/1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Glimmering Void :w::w:3
Sorcery
Delve (you may exile any number of non-basic lands from your opponent's graveyard as you cast this spell. It costs :1: less to cast for each non-basic land exiled this way.)
Spend only mana produced by basic lands or delve to cast this spell.
Destroy all lands or destroy all creatures.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Landshark! :g::g:1
Enchantment
Spend only mana produced by basic lands to cast this spell.
If the only non-basic lands in play are controlled by your opponent they must sacrifice a creature each time they declare an attack. If the only non-basic lands in play are controlled by your opponent you may tap target creature at the beginning of each of your attack phases. If there are no non-basic lands in play exile Landshark! and put a 3/3 green beast token in play.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post-hypnotic Suggestion :u::u:
Instant
Spend only mana produced by basic lands to cast this spell. Post-hypnotic suggestion may not be countered.
Look at target opponent's hand. For each non-basic land they have in play you may have them discard target card and draw a replacement. For each non-basic land you have in play you must discard a card.
If WotC really wanted to tone down the value of dual lands some there are thousands of ways to do that.

But the point isn't to keep prices down, the point is to get prices up to the point where nobody wants to play, so that magically (wow I can't believe I'm using this pun) all those people that wanted to play Legacy will give up and decide to open packs to play Standard.
At least, that's the point if you're WotC.

Jesus F Christ can we just lock all the duplicate threads and ban discussion of the Reserve List outside of the designated thread? I'm sick of seeing "unread topics" when I log in and it's just more of the same, tired old shit. Crying about the Reserved List is so day-before-yesterday.

My DCI and SS numbers actually share like 5 digits, in the same place in each number, and 2 more in the wrong place. I ALWAYS have to doublecheck.
