View Full Version : Bringing Back Legacy To Wmass?

Hey All,

For those who don't know me, I've ran Type 1 events at the Hadley Mall (Old Beanie Exchange/X9 Games) and a couple at Off The Wall games before Kevin sold it. I've been playing tournament magic for almost a decade now (Eternal formats only), and bet I have met/know many of you north-eastern kids on these boards.

Jumping to the question - now that Off the Wall is dead, and my recently renewed interest in the game, I am considering starting to run events at the Hadley Mall/X9 games. There is a very regular 10-20 person crew there that plays standard, a few of which who would probably play legacy - but more importantly the store is in an awesome location (food court, buffalo wild wings, arizona pizza, etc. in same building) and has tons of playable T2 and Legacy cards available (as well as my own), as well as easily sit 40, and free video games (Smash brothers, anything on PS2/Xbox, etc).

Who would be down for the return of a regular monthly Legacy event out here? Feel free to check the tournaments I've ran at Off the Wall or X9 (www.themanadrain.com) in the past - my standard is to give out 90+% of entry fees, and I try as often as I can to make it 100% ("since it's the same as if you just sold that much product today Mr. Store owner!").

Thinking $10-$15 range, duals, fetches, wastelands, etc. up for grabs. Even have bazaar, workshop, moxen, etc. should back to back months of solid attendance promote me running a larger $20 event. Still have not decided if events will usually be Saturday or Sunday. The main reason I thought to make a post for interest first was due to the pretty horrid attendance I've seen at World's Apart Games legacy events in hadley (maybe people don't wanna come out here anymore?).

Yes? No? Maybe? Voice questions and comments here.

My team talks of past legacy awesomeness in the Hadley/Amherst area all the time. I miss slinging spells twice a month and now that my team usually makes up ~25% of the Die Hard Games meta there is no reason why we can't revisit Hadley just as often.

Off the Wall without Kevin running everything isn't Off the Wall, just a weak imitation.

I'm all the way down here in D.C. and I would travel to a few of these whenever I could.

Maybe for something huge but probably not until you get it off the ground. Traveling 4.5 hours one way for a 30 person tournament is a little silly.

You could count on me to make some showings. Also, I'd be willing to help back some prizes.

My brother and I would definitely be willing to make it out west for these, at least when I'm home from school and not in LA. Transportation might be a minor problem but I'm sure we could work it out.

I would be especially interested if anyone from the mid-Hudson Valley area (Red Hook, Kingston, Poughkeepsie, New Paltz, etc...) wanted to carpool over there.

When you have a ridiculous amount of hot women surrounding the area, cards aren't the only thing you should be tapping.

lol

BTW, I voted 'No' because I can't go every month, but since I might go once and a while you can look at one of the no's as a maybe.

I might come out of retirement to show up at a few of these.

I could most likely give you rides from Boston.

Like Rockout said, right now the only place we have is DHG in RI. I'm willing to bet if there was something going on in MA we'd not only the people from CT, MA, RI but also people from NY. I remember seeing some the the Syracuse guys at tournaments in MA in the past.

What kind of seating capacity does the store at the Hadley Mall have? Would there be comfortable seating for 30+, or would people be crammed in?

Did completely miss this.

We comfortably fit 29 people 2 weeks ago for a standard event with a couple tables to spare. All a matter of the regular store go-ers not nesting/camping out with their bags and cards strewn everywhere.

Will consider chatting with Bill from that other thread, maybe report back with an idea after this weekend.

Hollywood is correct.

As long as I'm at school I'll go to every Legacy event there is in the area (and Vintage if there's enough interest) and I used to drive out here from Boston all the time for the $10 Off the Wall tournaments, so I don't see why I couldn't over the summer if the prize support is worth it.

Hey Caleb, if you would need the help organizing, running events, I could probably help out once a month at least for the summer.
Send me a PM if you would like some help.

Seeing that Off The Wall "IS NOT DEAD" How about running them there?

I would love to come... but I moved to Alaska. (and sold off 99% of my stuff to do so)
I know things got a little out of control when MWC left Western MA.
But seriously folks, keep Legacy alive at Off the Wall! There can be plenty of good tournaments in the future.

To be honest - I don't have a huge vested interest in holding them there now that Kevin is no longer running the store. The Hadley Mall/X-9 has a very solid T2/draft base, and has almost a decade of Vintage/Eternal events under its belt. The store owner/TO experience is a huge plus for Hadley/X-9, and a pretty big detractor from the new Off The Wall owner (He ran one legacy event, then went off the radar, lack of DCI reporter capabilities, etc.). Hadley/X-9 also employs two L1 Judges, and a L2 Judge on call should we need one.

Seeing as the people interested is already just under 20, I'm going to figure out in the next few days a date for an event in April methinks.

Why not try to get a weekly event going? The best way to get the big monthly tournaments is by building a local scene. I think having a weekly proxy tournament would be a great idea. I even think stuff like 100% proxy tournaments are great for small weekly events, and as long as the monthly tournaments are low proxy or sanctioned it still gives the players incentive to buy cards from the store

This may be a possibility - but I feel that a $10-15 once a month event will allow people outside of wmass to pick one time to travel out here, vs. a $5-10 event that happens weekly and may struggle with 12-16 people.

I meant do both. Even if the weekly is really cheap, like 5 bucks for credit. Something like what ELD does with T1 every week. I don't expect people to travel for the small weekly ones, but they could end up getting local players interested and involved in the tournament which would lead to bigger monthly events

I'm in favor of the larger monthly tournament. I wouldn't travel up there unless the prize support would at least cover my entry + gas.

Agreed considering its an hour and a half ride for me.

It seems crazy to me that an area with so many colleges does not have several Legacy tournaments a month. When TraderJ used to do his in Mobile, we just had one major university, and it was always a good turnout.

This is great. X9 would definitely be preferable to off the wall as the new guy who runs in there is uber creepy and doesnt really seem to know much about the game (Seth is the man too). As a person who roams around Wmass and parts of CT trying to find people to play legacy with, I know 8-10 people who would show up to a serious legacy event. Hell, we have 6-12 people playing unsanctioned $3 dollar legacy FNM in Enfield CT, I dont see why the 4-8 serious people who play there wouldn't be down for a big tourney. We also have a few people at lost harbor who are actively trying to get into the scene as well and maybe if we did 5-10 proxies we could get a huge crowd. If you need any help organizing please message me, as I would be more than willing to help out.

+1
Seth was always knowledgeable and good to me when I dealt with him in the past.

I was back home for a few days in Feb, and visited Off the Wall. I don't know about "creepy", but the guy doesn't have much interest/passion for the game. That is not a good recipe for good tourneys and support of the game.

I would gladly go to larger monthly events. Weekly probably not so much and I imagine it might be difficult where a lot of the playerbase I know of lives in the more easterly parts.

I would go to these if the prize support was right. For that to happen the entry fee would probably need to be more like $20-25....
