Sensei's Divining Top + Thopter Foundry

My question is:

Can you tap Sensei's Divining Top to draw a card and sacrifice it to Thopter Foundry paying 1 mana in response?
If you can do it, you draw 1 card and have a token + 1 life, but if you can't, why?

I am asking because I heard peopla saying you can andothers saying you can't..

You can. Your Sensei's Divining Top will go to the graveyard and not to the top of your library as a result though.

T: Draw a card, then put Sensei's Divining Top on top of its owner's library.

You have to take a close look at how activated abilities work.

Everything before the colon is the cost, everything after is the effect. You pay the cost when you announce the ability, and then do the effect when the ability resolves.

When the ability resolves, you do as much of the effect as possible. You draw a card if possible, then you put the Top on top if possible. If the Top left play in between the ability being activated and the ability resolving, it can't be put on top.

Yes, i forgot to write that the top when sacrificed would have gone in the graveyard..
I heard about this last week, but tried to do it yesterday at a 63 people tournament and the judge didn't let me do it.

That sucks, but it happens. Hopefully in the future you'll be able to explain it better to your opponent or a judge.

Next time I will be able to explain it better to the opponent and judge for sure, but I guess the judge should know interactions and rulings.. :confused:

Perhaps the problem was that you did things in the wrong order. You will have to activate the sensei ability, then respond by activating the thopter foundry ability. They resolve in reverse order, so first you sacrifice the top and get a 1/1 and gain 1 life, then you draw a card (and put the top on top, which is impossible).

I did the thing in the correct order.. But as the judge told it was not possibleto do I didn't complain.
