View Full Version : Warping in foils.

I have heard (and noticed) that foils that are kept in the open tend to warp. I know that keeping them packed tight will help, but I'm curious as to how to maximize this. I have some jank foils and I'm curious to see just how much they will warp in the correct conditions. I assume that high humidity and heat will accelerate the process, but I'm wondering what other things affect warping?

The biggest factors are heat and humidity. I'm not sure where you live, but if it's somewhere fairly warm, find a nice, warm day and leave it outside for 4-5 hours in the sun. It'll be pretty well curved.
If you want some weird warping [Note: For the love of god, I don't recommend EVER doing this. Bad stuff will probably happen] I bet putting it in a microwave for 3 seconds would do it. I know a skinned grape and a CD both have unusual reactions. There's tons of videos on YouTube of it, I'm sure.

I saw a video of a guy microwaving a foil Island. It caught fire.

A CD sparks and lights on fire. I haven't tried a skinned grape.
Heh heh. Fire! Fire!
Anyway, yeah, heat and humidity are the culprits. And maybe psychic powers.

And maybe psychic powers.
In Spain, it's traditionally said it's a judeo-masonic conspiracy...

I microwaved a foil once. It sparked a bunch and looks like it has cracks all over, but it didn't bend any. I'd go with the sunlight+humidity idea, myself.

Hmm, because the spring here isn't too humid at least yet, I'll put it in the sauna, then take it outside to dry. I'll try it later this week and will probably post results.

My u/w painter deck has all foil lands, and I've never had a problem. Although mine are double sleeved.

I think he actually wants to do it on purpose for some reason. If you keep your cards in double sleeves or in a box that doesn't let them shift easily, you never have the problem. Leaving them overnight in a car will usually do it if it was decently hot.

I'm just curious as to how far they'll warp. I shall sacrifice a foil Brink of Disaster in the name of science.

Humidity is the major factor. I have a few of those little silica gel packs taped to the lids of the large boxes most of my cards are in. I had a ton of warped foil lands (which I really never use) that I packed tightly in an old deck box and combined with the silica have started flattening out nicely.

You can just do like I do to valuable cards: spill coffee over them. Not only will they warp, but there's also some awesome discoloration! If you take enough sugar in your coffee, you can now throw your card at a wall and it will stick. Awesome.

The king has to be dropping them in motor oil and letting them dry out. I saw some that had that happen to them and I had to admit, they actually looked amazing on the black cards as they turned really dark and foreboding looking.

Well, I forgot to post the results yesterday. Here they are. I thought it would warp more though. It still looks ok, but it has turned into more of a bowl instead of a u-shape. This might be from water condensating/having been splashed on it. I think it could still be salvaged, but it's Brink Of Disaster so why even bother?

Because it just got errata to make it better!
