I'm conducting a survey of both the Vintage and Legacy communities, and I'll report the results to Wizards and to the broader Magic community. I'm interested in learning what the average age of each community is. Please vote!

Turns out I don't even know how old I am anymore. I put myself up as 25 even though I'm still 24...I think? Anyways, yeah, around there. In my defense, categories suck 'cause the odd number is first. That's just...wrong. Normally it's safe to pick the one with 25 since it includes some earlier years too and I fall somewhere in there.

Average age range of people visiting this site and taking the effort to actually reply to this poll. I can imagine that people who are older do not feel the need to visit this or any magic site. My cousin for instance is 33 (I'm almost 35) and he doesn't visit any websites. A lot of my magic buddies are in the 30 range and hardly ever visit this site either. I wonder what the real demographics are on magic players worldwide.

Turning 25 tomorrow (April 21st), but since this is a scientific poll, I had to side with the youngsters of 23-24.

Just to brag a little: out of 25 years, 14 of them playing this game, giving a .56 ratio.

I'm 28 and everybody I play with is older than me, save one or two.

As for this exercise, I think the results will reveal what age brackets enjoy posting on forums more than anything else. I know lots of Legacy players that actively build decks and theorycraft with one another but do not post on forums, or even really read them for that matter.

My curiosity is still burning though. :)

If you started playing years ago (probably sometime before 2003), the mechanics of the game were much easier to understand. Now, with younger players trying to get involved in the game, explaining how to play is an absolute nightmare.

Remember when someone asked you how to play you could show them how to simply turn cards sideways and what "Swampwalk" means? Yeah, those days are long gone. The mechanics of the game (albeit simplistic to most of us) have changed drastically, and along with that a much higher level of complexity in the game's overall architecture.

I would hate to be a fifteen year-old kid coming into the game today trying to learn what a "replacement effect" is or what "timestamp" means. I used to just love playing Juggernauts and Witch Hunters (who am I kidding; I'll still find a way).

Pretty nice distribution so far. Not too surprised to see the young professionals + college students driving the curve. The perfect age to have been just getting into the game long enough ago for nostalgia to be a factor, while old enough to have some disposable income to spend on more expensive pieces of cardboard.

For some anecdotal data - I personally drifted away from standard after heading to school in Middle-Of-Nowhere, ME which pretty much meant I could reliably find magic tourneys thrree months out of the year. Eternal formats just made more sense.

32. me and some friends each stole an unlimited tournament deck and some arabian nights packs. stopped playing for a year, got back into it for ice age and fallen empires. then quit again, just picking up random packs here and there until tempest. then ignored the game until onslaught block and played through mirrodin, then quit and sold off everything. bought a single betrayers precon, lame, then quit. got back into it with the time spiral block. and got into legacy about when morningtide came out.

So Vintage community is slightly older than Legacy community? This is pretty interesting.

Well, it makes sense that those people with an interest in older, more valuable cards would partake in a format (essentially) dictated by nothing but.

Minus the occasional screwed-up card (Snakeform/Mutavault) knowing the fine details of the rules is definitely not needed to learn to play modern Magic, any more than you needed to memorise that hilarious rat-maze of spellcasting priorities to learn to play 1995 Magic.

Shards block is by *far* the most complex of the three pieces of current Standard, and it still doesn't contain any mechanic as confusing and under- or un-explained as Banding or Enchant World vs. Original Legend Rule.

Infernal Spawn of Evil? lol. My youngest is in the "Daddy...Card" phase. Right now she has a Mesa Pegasus, Venerable Monk, and a half eaten Soldier token. When my older one was her age, she ate cards all the time, so i stopped giving them to her. The little one only ate the soldier, hasn't put any of the others in her mouth.

Im nearing my 25th.. so im in the golden middle of that chart..

Started playing when Exodus and Saga roamed the shelves.. there weren't a lot of people interested in Magic at the time, so i was just buying cards, putting some "cool" decks together (Coat of Arms "Apes" deck, Ogre Shaman "Burn" deck, Gobblin Offensive/Saproling Symbiosis with mana elves "Token Boom" deck, etc.)

I stopped around 7th edition, when my dad lost it and burned a big chunk of my collection (most of everything i gatered so far). Then i quit until my college years, i came back with Kamigawa, spent some money on boxes, some money on Warhammer miniatures (well quite a lot of that stuff actually..aw:S) and went out again when they started with "rapid Lorwyn sets, gotta catch em all".

Then i played some WoW, found out i dont like it as much as Magic (still spent a lot of my time there..)

I stared playing casually in like ten years ago for like a year, stopped bc none of my friends were playing it.

Got super drunk at college, saw my best friend's roommate playing it with some of his buds and deiced to play him hammered for old times sake. It was fun because i got like 30 elves in play and a wellwisher.

I threw a couple of decks together to play with them, constructed a Jund deck this past summer and played a little bit with it. Sold all my standard cards this winter (no way Baneslayer angel is worth more then Force of Will) and moved into legacy because I felt that it was the best format in terms of having powerful cards but nothing broken.

Most common age being 23-24 makes sense because we've been playing since Ice Age/Mirage/Tempest and retain some of the nostalgia that adds so much value to the format. Most people that age probably did not collect Alpha/Beta otherwise they might be playing Vintage. I'm 24 and that's my experience at least.
