All our altered artwork is done to Wizards specifications of what is legal for tournament use (Can be found at their website www.wizards.com/magic).
These are all artwork done over real copies of the original cards.
Ultimately it is up to the discretion of a head judge whether to allow altered artwork to be played in their tournament. Usually not an issue at all except for at the grand prix and pro tour level, may not even be an issue then.
They will always be allowed at Jupiter Games events =).

You make an excellent point, I will give an alternative option to the altered work just give me some time to come up with what that option will be.
I'm surprised your not a fan, I can't get enough of it.

I agree with Adam (thought that would never happen) I rather just have credit or something. I don't really dig the alters. I mean I realize they are the hot thing now, and some do look cool, but I rather pick up foil deltas and such.

There is no clear or official boundary between Upstate New York and Downstate New York, but the term "Upstate" is sometimes used to refer to the whole of the state besides New York City and Long Island.

Technically we are called upstate NY because we are not NYC, that's pretty much the distinction since the rest of the world thinks NYC is as big as half the state.

except that NYC and LI are south of the lateral split from PA, so calling anything above that split Upstate makes sense. I know the first time I said "upstate" to someone not from LI, they looked puzzled. and when I referred to NYC as "the city", someone asked if i meant Philly. Ha.
On topic: I don't care for altered art much either. Its cool to look at sometimes, but its like silicon implants, if they look good naturally, why mess with it?

It's risky enough bringing a legacy deck or two to a tournament, let alone bringing out the big decks. You're going to get us all robbed.
That being said, I'll bring mine........what're the gun laws in NY like? have to bring protection

Actually anyone who lives/grew up in Upstate NY will tell you that it's all of NY that isn't NYC/surrounding area. (Basically anything south of like, Kingston I consider Downstate, New Paltz/Poughkeepsie get all the leafers every year so you pretty much have to count them). When you tell someone from out of state that you're from NY they assume the entire state is a giant City. So we find we have to specify Upstate NY so that they understand there are cows down the road and hills/mountains everywhere.
In on-topic news, this event looks cool with such a unique prize pool. I should be able to make it.

Well, most people are just dumb then for assuming that and not using spacial reasoning. What I posted was what I assume 'upstate NY' to be by looking at the geography of the state. I understand your convention but I think it's dumb.
Whenever someone says NY, I ask 'city or state?' I don't assume, because it's dumb to assume. So now to cater to dumb people, you end up confusing smart people. So if someone ever says to me "I'm from upstate NY", I'm going to be confused now. This is why people should use cities or landmarks instead of vague terms.

I think as long as you aren't retarded and leave your bag unattended (like my friend has), then it shouldn't matter what you bring. I usually carry my vintage and legacy deck. I just know that there are cameras in Eli's store and that I am going to ensure my bags safety at all times. You should be able to feel people unzipping your bag if its on your back and if you leave your deck unattended then you deserve to have it stolen.

We haven't in the past, but I have been told my store's cube is pretty kick-a$$. I'll try one out at the May 15th one and see if we get any interest. I'll keep the buyin low, lets say $5 so people don't get to nit-picky over minutia. Prize will be the full amount back out in store credit.
We have caught several lost decks with our camera's and been able to return them to the proper owners in the past, but it makes our job easier if people are careful with their belongings and don't lose them in the first place.

You'd figure for a big event you'd have real top notch altered shit to give away.

Our local artists name is Adam Wilson. His delta's are one of my favorites which really brings me to the point of people's taste in artwork tends to be like their taste in food (differs for everyone). With that in mind there is no way to make everyone happy, but the big name artists also charge about $200 per single card alteration (not feasible).
yawg07
05-02-2010, 11:24 AM
Who the hell charges $200 per alteration?
Sooru is amazing, extremely smooth color work, and they are new to the scene.
You could get a good price out of them, and Poxy does work for very reasonable rates.
CK charges a lot, and so does Masa. But their work is sickness.
Masa is all about altering art, though. CK does a good extension, but I don't know if they do it on commission.
Catherine and I charge 20-30 per card for extensions.
Not sure what Gal/Bristol/Bigup/Sandreline are charging.

It's also a problem if none of these people are local. The logistics of sending stuff out, waiting on it forever, and I can't get it done with as low cost as I can with a local artist. It's not like that many cards can be done overnight. If other artists out there are willing to give it a try feel free to contact me and we can work something out, but I certainly don't think my artist is bad at all.

I suppose I can see your point if your only context for artistic taste is comic books and Magic cards. If you want random close-ups of faces on your cards, by all means go see Poxy. Also If you do happen to win altered fetches at the tournament you can always sell them to someone with broader artistic tastes and use the money to buy alters you and your friends will like.

Or, I could just make my own, lol
If someone likes your art and not mine, why does it make them have broader artistic tastes? lol
It just seems like your alters are rather hastily done to be tourney prizes. Look at the sun on the Flooded Strand, it is a glob, not a shining circle.
Why do the deltas have random graffiti-esque clouds at the bottom? What made you do the new ones as textless and the old ones as not?
I'm just curious, is all.

The text can be removed if the original picture isn't altered to the point that it is unrecognizeable as the original picture. This is how wizards judges the legality of alters. I'm not saying you guys should have an art-off on Saturday or anything, but I have gotten adam started on another set of fetches so if someone were to prefer one picture over the other they will also have that option in addition to taking an amount in credit over the prize. This second set will have completely different art for each of the cards.

This discussion just isn't worth my time. I've seen the work you've posted, and frankly you don't have any room to give me artistic advice. When you run a tournament, you can give away your alters as prizes. We haven't had complaints from anyone besides you.

I'll be there with a car full of people. Plus I have a ton of good stuff for trade. If people want pimp stuff come find me!
Any cars coming from Boston/Mass? Or NYC even?

Going to be driving down from the Albany region, more specifically Saratoga Springs. If anybody needs to carpool please let me know, and I'll possibly even reply. Also, if Jake from the comic depot weeklies reads this, please contact me so we can set something up.

Be sure to see you at the next one after this. Was suprised as hell to see Jupiter all over TOGIT yesterday, even if The Valley was all over the top 8 snagging 8th, 6th, 4th, and 2nd. What gives?

You guys have faithfully attended our events, I figured why not bring our crew to your event. I don't often get a chance to play magic myself and relax and not run the event so it was a nice change of pace.

Actually, this isn't 'our' event. TOGIT is an hour away from the Lehigh Valley. We all frequent a store called The Portal, which tries to run larger tournaments at the local fire hall but because of scheduling conflicts hasn't done so since November. They've done tournaments for a Time Walk, a couple Moxes, a Lotus, playsets of Goyfs, and a couple others. There's a Mox Emerald tournament in the works but they're really slow about setting it up.
I don't know what the other prize support will be besides the first prize, so I don't know if it's worth it to you guys, but I'm sure we'll let you know when they finally get around to setting a date and stuff.

I care more about having a good time then the prize, obviously don't want too travel too far so often, but let me know when your next one is and I will try and make it. I rarely get to play and even after 17 years of it I luckily still have fun playing.

Some of the bigger events are probably worth it, but TN is FAR. There is a group from virginia that always seems to make it though.
Would love to see you in attendance!

How Mercenary Indeed, the trade value I am giving an alternative too is already posted on the first page of this spread sheet. My cash values and trade value's are about %15 different as I do with most trades and will likely be the case for this event as well.

It's amazing how many people are expecting to do well and win prizes. Who cares what the prizes are?
Come out to Vestal, hang out with friends, eat good food, meet some new people, play some cards, HAVE FUN........
Someone once told me, "the worst part of playing magic, is playing magic". Use magic as an excuse to get together and have a good time. Eli, I have four people coming up from Connecticut, none of us are going to Top 8, but we'll have a blast anyway. Thanks for holding another tournament.

I do agree with what you're saying here, you shouldn't make plans to go to a tournament or not based on what prizes are being given out. However, I am sure that quite a few people, like me, are very competitive. The most fun part of Magic to me is the competition. I like sitting down, looking at my opponent, and squaring off. I get a thrill every time, and that is definitely what drives me to play the most. I enjoy hanging out, trading, laughing at ridiculous topdecks etc. But I do really enjoy the competition part of the game more than the social aspect for sure.

Do you realize who the tournament organizer is? Eli has always had awesome prizes that scale with entry, for the entire history of him running events. I don't think he can run a bad event.

Sure, hanging out with friends and stuff is great. However, when you're spending 25$-$30 on entry fee you want the prize pool to reflect how much money was put towards it.
