I'm moving out to San Diego for the summer (interning at Qualcomm), so I'm just wondering what the Magic community is like there. What are some good places to play in downtown or near UCSD?

This is the thread you want: http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?15072-Weekly-Legacy-Tournaments-in-San-Diego/page11
There used to be tournaments at Game Empire. But they stopped awhile ago. It's on Claremont Mesa after the bridge before you get to Convoy. You should still be able to pick up casual games or something. Personally, I think it's a little cleaner than the alternative listed below, but the employees are really condescending.
I think they said something about conglomerating in Artifex these days. That's in Mira Mesa around the Best Buy and In and Out etc. It's kind of hard to see, it's one of the bunch of tiny shops.
Interesting crowd of people... would advise not taking your girlfriend, especially if she's asian. Mine was kind of weirded out.

The magic community here is pretty good actually... for Standard. FNM at a local shop (Game Empire) used to be Legacy but it switched when players (like myself) either moved or didn't have the time to attend. 25 players quickly dropped to 8 and they switched to Standard.
I'm down for a few games though sometime. I play Reanimator, Solidarity and SI. Hit me up.
