View Full Version : Announcing triggers, how much do I have to remind my opponent?

If I am playing a card like Kiln Fiend, how often do I have to "announce" his +3/+0 trigger? If my opponent asks me how many spells I have cast this turn or how big he is, I have no problem answering. However, do I have to remind them he is getting bigger as I cast every instant or sorcery? "Bolt you, Kiln triggers" etc...

There are four different categories of triggers in terms of how triggers are handled by the Missed Trigger penalty, which effectively governs how triggers have to be handled by players. You can read the Infraction Guide if you're interested. This (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=judge/article/20080416a) article is somewhat old (and therefore may be outdated on minor details), but the basics are still the same.

Kiln Fiend falls under the "not optional, but requires no choices to be made and has no effect on the visual representation of the game" category, so you can assume it resolved without announcing it.

You do have to point out the correct power of the Fiend (if your opponent is mistaken) when it becomes relevant to the game, such as when the Fiend deals damage. Also, as you say, you do have to truthfully answer questions about "free information", such as its power or how many spells you've cast this turn.

Yeah, I don't want to "coach" my opponent into dealing with Kiln Fiend or be bothered with "adjusting" his power every time I cast an instant or sorcery, but I have no intention of deceiving them either. Thanks for the clarification.

It is kind of like Storm count. I don't want to be like "hey, you may not think I am running a Storm based deck, but now that I am specifically keeping track of it now you should adjust your playing".
