With GP Columbus coming up, I wanted to build a rogue deck that might catch people off guard. Eldrazi cards have been receiving alot of attention in the forums, but I haven't seen a list like this yet:
4x Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
4x Kozilek, the Butcher of Truth
4x Bogarden Hellkite
4x Fire//Ice
4x Orim's Chant
4x Swords to Plowshares
3x Fling
3x Enlightened Tutor
3x Mystic Tutor
4x Lotus Petal
4x Mox Diamond
4x Sneak Attack
4x Volcanic Island
4x Tundra
3x Plateau
4x Flooded Strand
4x City of Traitors
3x Mountain
2x Island
1x Plains
The premise of the deck is simple: use mana-accelerating artifacts to power out an early Sneak Attack and beat face with Annihilators for the win. This works particularly well under the protection of an Orim's Chant. Some thoughts on card selection:
Emrakul & Kozilek- obviously these guys pack the biggest Annihilator punch, even without getting their casting bonusses. Usually, one swing with either of these guys is game over, since it's happening before turn 4. That means it's usually whatever critters/enchantments/artifacts my opponent has out and all of their lands.
Bogarden Hellkite- this guy was a late addition, but he's been amazing in testing. He's awesome as a defensive play, Sneak Attacking in to block and deal 5 damage, that way my Emrakul is lethal next turn. Other times he's 10 damage to the dome, which beats out Umalog in pure damage. He is a very efficient target for Sneak Attack, in color, and you can hard cast him relatively easily if you're still having trouble sticking a Sneak Attack.
Fire//Ice- tap down a land, draw a card. That's pretty good. Kill Goblin Lackey AND Matron, also pretty good.
Swords to Plowshares- self-explanatory. Best removal in the game.
Orim's Chant- originally I wanted to build this deck heavy blue and use FoWs, Dazes, etc as a counter backup to the combo. I found that the deck was extremely unreliable with all the extra counterspells added in, and getting rid of those for tutors and more mana-accelerants really evened out my draws. That being said, the nature of the combo win is still the same- it is still vulnerable to control decks and counterspells. Orim's Chant opens up the game for one big turn, which is all this deck needs to win. It's also extremely useful against early aggro decks like golbins that might kill you before you can go off.
Fling- another late addition that I'm still testing. The ability to swing with Emrakul and Fling him FTW is just disgusting. It makes the deck faster, but is essentially dead if you haven't got a big creature in your hand to play.
Tutors & Mana Artifacts- pretty standard stuff, all meant to get the combo going earlier in the game. It isn't uncommon, in shadow testing, for me to get the Sneak Attack out and lethal damage on the board turn 4, which is pretty good.
I've gone through several builds of this deck, and I'm still not convinced that this is the best route. Like I wrote before, I originally had this build heavy-blue, with counterspells as the basis for the deck. I've also considered splashing black over blue altogether for hand disruption early. I've also thought about splashing green for more mana accel, opening up Polymorph, and Worldly Tutor. I'm completely open to other ideas as far as the color scheme of this deck, but I think there is value in the list I have posted currently.
Mana base and Sideboard are still open to discussion as well, as most of it will be determined by what colors I settle on. As of right now, here is my sidebaord for the list I have:
4x Force of Will
4x Daze
4x Brainstorm
3x Venser, Shaper Savant
Like I worte previously, this is basically the control suite I had in the maindeck before I decided to go more straight combo over combo/control.
Please take a look and let me know what you think. Like I said, I am open to changing colors if the card choices seem better.
