I want to know if I can tutor up a Chalice and set it to a nonzreo value by paying extra for this spell. It seems to me that the CMC of the artifact I am looking for is static (not X, but 0) because while I am casting a spell, I am not casting that spell. That makes sense to me, but I am asking because stranger things have happened on these old cards. And this one has not received errata in quite some time.

As an additional cost to cast Transmute Artifact, sacrifice an artifact.
Search your library for an artifact card. If that card's converted mana cost is less than or equal to the sacrificed artifact's converted mana cost, put it onto the battlefield. If it's greater, you may pay X, where X is the difference. If you do, put it onto the battlefield. If you don't, put it into its owner's graveyard. Then shuffle your library.

You're putting the artifact onto the battlefield, you're not casting it.
