Hey guys,
I'd like to try to get a store with ample space to run some Legacy 1ks in MA. Before I approach some owners I want to find out if anyone would actually be interested in these and I figured this was the best place to look for that interest. I would love to have something like this going on once a month or even every other.

So, If there were a Legacy 1k in MA on some random Saturday with a $25-$30 entry fee, would you show up and how many people do you think would be coming with you?

Thanks in advance.

Good amount of responses so far... If anyone knows of a similar forum I could start another of these threads for please pm me with the link. Just out of curiosity, who here plays at TE?

You want to elaborate on TE?

TE = That's Entertainment here in Worcester, which has weekly Legacy Sundays starting at noon (with really good store credit as prizes - really good because it is a generous amount & they have a very good selection of singles, packs, etc). Both my son & I play at TE fairly regularly (this is Allan) and are grateful for good local Legacy. Monthly 1K Legacy would be of interest, but not necessarily do-able every month (assuming Saturdays - other commitments & interests).

I play at That's E regularly (Jack "monoblack" Smith), and would love to see a Legacy 1K, though going routinely would be difficult. I imagine my three regularly attending friends would also be interested.

I would come and bring atleast one other... I am not able to go to Jupiter Games tournaments because of the distance, but mass tournaments would be fine (especially after I go to college).

I know I would love to go to some Legacy tourneys at some point. Worcester though, that's a toughie on me without any transit ATM. But yeah sign me up as interested in some.

My friends and I are always on the lookout for Legacy tournaments. We're in Connecticut, but travel almost every weekend to Vestal, Philly, Boston, Providence, NJ, etc. Although I don't always have the same people with me, I always manage to fill my car, so should be able to bring 4 people to an event, assuming there isn't a larger event on the same day within a 300-mile radius. heh

Good amount of interest so far. I would love to get a monthly or bimonthly event going. The first store I have in mind is TJ Collectibles in Milford MA. They can easily hold 150 people. They had a poor turnout last year for their dual land tournament, I think it was just under 40 people. So I really need a lot of replies here to have a shot at convincing them. The real challenge will be getting them to try Legacy again. If we manage to get one off the ground and over 40 people show up they would certainly have no problem continuing to run them.

DHG in Rhode Island has been having dual land tournaments almost every 1-2 months for the past year, and as far as I know, they never broke 40 players. Good luck with that.

Definitely interested but more likely to attend if it was further west (coming from Albany, NY area). The one Hadley tounament I went to was a decent drive and fairly well attended.

If we were to get these going at TJs it would be approximately 50 minutes longer for those of you coming from the West. I bet if we could get a couple of these with good attendance we may be able to convince Tom to run a tournament series. He ran a few of these a couple years back for standard. The legacy scene is growing though and I'd like to keep it that way.

I strongly support more western mass legacy on any scale. I may even be able to twist a few arms into doing so as well.

skulls, if you mean getting Mike from Lost Harbor to host one, good luck. I have asked him before and the last two he tried to hold only got 4 people each. If we can assure him at least 8, he may consider it. He does have an open date the week before pre-release.

I think TJ Collectibles would be a great place to run these. I can talk to them and see if they have any interest in running a big legacy event. Does anyone else have any ideas as far as potential stores / locations to run these tournaments at?

I would suggest any store in Mass because all of the stores in Mass are pretty good from what I've seen.

If you can't get TJs we at Toys N Things would interested in running the tournaments even if they are under 40 people. We recently started running legacy and extended on Sundays. So far we had mixed success with both (roughly 5 to 10 players) The store can handle up to 40 players starting out, and once things get going we can move to a larger space (KoC hall in Beverly) to accomodate tournaments that are 40+.

As far as card selection, while we have only been in business less than a year (10 months) we have built a library that focuses on cards in demand by players (like Force of Will, Mox Diamond) rather than collectors. Those who have bought from us say our singles prices compare very well to other stores in MA and NH.

So let me know what you think. Hopefully we can put something together.

Hmm... I would still like to maybe help out the MA people (Especially us Western MA people) get a tourny going at Lost Harbor. Any ideas though as to how to approach the owner to prove to him that there is the interest in a store having them. It's just sad that there hasn't been any tourneys of any size in a while.

I am hoping to use this thread as a starting point... But we need more interest to convince a store to run the size of a tourny I am thinking about. At 25 dollars for entry for a 1k the store needs to get about 44 people to break even I think, maybe a few more. 40 would even them out for the prize money, but they still need to pay a judge and someone to run the reporter.

Anyone else out there interested in attending a legacy $1k event like this in MA?

We need MORE support before we can even think about approaching store owners and having them take us seriously...

Thanks Everyone!

I will be on vacation near Amherst in early August. I would like to attend something significant in Western Mass at some time during my stay. Worcester is what, 1.25 hours or so? I could swing that.

Well as I wrote in my earlier post Toys N Things is willing to help build support for a large tournament by developing the legacy community in North and Central MA. Western MA maybe a bit too far for some to travel unless it's a very large event. Even so we are willing to start with a lower prize amount ($500) and gradually build up to $1Ks.
That said there are a couple things that any store which runs a cash prize event are going to have to deal with. The first and biggest issue is getting a permit to pay out cash in lieu of store credit or cards. Paying out cash means that you are operating under MA gaming laws, which are locally enforced. Meaning that some towns might allow the event and issue a permit, while others will not. This is going to affect which stores are able to offer cash prizes.
This brings up the second issue of what players would want instead of cash if a store that runs a large event can't get the permit needed to pay out cash prizes. Would players still be interested if a store wants to pay with cards instead of cash? If so what cards would they expect to see?

The most popular cards by far would be playsets of dual lands/ goyfs.

For a tournament that wanted to pay out roughly 500 you could do something like playsets of duals to top 4 (blue ones to top 2, badlands type stuff to 3,4 ) and go down from there.
A good idea would be to post several prize structures based on the number of attendants.
8-20ppl pays X
21-35 pays Y and so on.

Store credit in lieu of cash prizes is ok too as long as the store has a nice collection of legacy staples. I have seen places offer X amount in cash or X * 1.25 in credit as well. An easy way to get around the whole permit and gaming law stuff might be to make the prizes cards, but then purchase those cards from the winners for cash or credit. I am not sure how it would work out in the advertising whether you could list the prizes as cash or just list the cards you want to give out with your buy list prices next to them or something along those lines. I am fairly certain that there wouldn't be anything illegal about that, but I can't say for sure.

I do know that players are more than happy to go play for playsets of certain cards, but if you offer to give out x amount of credit instead of listed prizes as well then that should be enough to make everyone happy.

That being said, cash is king if you can make it work.

Whatever happened to TJs' weekly Legacy? It was pretty nice for a while there, and I would absolutely go back.

They changed to a modified list, banning Lion's Eye Diamond and Sensei's Diving Top. For serious.

I'm running Legacy at Scholars in Bridgewater every Wednesday Night. I will be running monthly events for large prizes starting in August or September.

I'm from N.H. and have been looking for a place to play Legacy on a regular basis, so if it is within 1 -1.5 hours from the border I would go for sure.
I don't mind a smaller crowd I just want to play at a few times a month.

I probably will end up coming down to visit you guys in Bridgewater before the summers over and if Toys N Things is still running tourny's every Sunday I just may start heading down there every weekend I have off.

Toys N Things is still running Sunday Legacy as Casual Sunday Legacy with 20 proxies. At the same time we are also setting up Sanctioned Legacy. Will have an announcement about that shortly.

I would also be interested in big Legacy tournaments in Mass. I could get at least one other person to come to these as well. I play at That's E fairly consistently and TJ's would be fine for me as long as Tom Shay isn't too involved (he has some shady practices).
