View Full Version : Figuring out what to do with some cards...

Now, I was almost finished with constructing a Reanimator deck, save for a couple of random cards and Underground Seas. However, with Mystical Tutor getting banned, and nobody finding a viable alternative just yet, I've slipped the deck back into my folder, save for a number of cards that could still find use in another deck.

Now, I have before me the following cards:

4 Misty Rainforest
4 Wasteland
4 Force of Will
4 Daze
4 Brainstorm
4 Ponder
4 Stifle

NB: Wasteland, Stifle and Ponder were not part of the Reanimator deck, but came out of my collection.

The way I'm seeing it, those are either the beginnings of a Thresh build (looking likely to be New Horizons), or Merfolk.

While I like the idea of New Horizons, I'm not sure if it's a deck that's going to stick around competitively for the long term, if previous Thresh variants are any indication.

Merfolk would be a lot cheaper to construct than New Horizons, but I've already got an opponent who does Merfolk. I'd be practically building another copy for no real good reason, and the mirror matchup would be horrible.

What would you guys suggest as a good course of action? The decks I could potentially face are:

Goblins
Merfolk
Dredge
Counterbalance (UGW with Natural Order and Progenitus)
False Cure/Kavu Predator
UG Threshold (like ridiculously old school with Wild Mongrel, Werebear and Circular Logic, but I'd expect it to change into something more like modern Thresh)

I'd suggest you build New Horizons as well as getting hold of 4 SDT and 4 Counterbalance (which shouldn't be all that expensive in comparison to the missing duals). That way you can build practically any form of blue aggro-control outside of Fish and ProBant (and you'll be missing only Hierarchs, Natural Orders + Prog for that). Fish locks you into one single deck, one which I believe will become less powerfull due to the absence of Combo (and the probable rise of aggro) in the soon-to-be meta (at least until the storm-fans all around the world have adjusted and figured out some new way to Tendrils for 20 on turn 3).

My first suggestion would be that you build merfolk, as you would only be dropping ~20$(more if you want Jitte) on the deck, but yes, due to the redundancy issue, you may want a different deck.

I would suggest New Horizons, it has put up strong results; and it seems like it would be fun to play.

You should make a colorful collage. Or a Menger Sponge.

Those cards are the core for plenty of decks, but a good one you're missing is Faeries. You have the Underground Seas, and you'd need Volcanic Islands, but the rest of the core of the deck is pretty inexpensive. It has great control and combo matchups, and while fast aggro isn't too great, you have great answers in the form of Firespout and Perish. Bitterblossom, Tombstalker, and Vendillion Clique are the only only money cards outside of the manabase and cards you already own. Your metagame sounds like a good one for maindeck Firespout too.

Build New Horizons. Its a really solid choice for today's meta.

I can sell you most of a Merfolk. Get Merfolk. From me.

Actually, I don't have Underground Seas. Those were one of the things I was still missing before the announcement about Mystical Tutor.

New Horizons and Canadian Threshold have good chances against the false Cure deck and Goblins, but I don't think they would fare well against the rest of the field. The merfolk deck is better against countertop, but a lot worse against goblins, and I've found they are horrible against some cure builds (if it's more combo than aggro, they have a better fight chance). I myself would test the following ideas:
Sea Stompy, Dreadstill, and Countertop-progenitus.

Well you're going to have to buy Underground Seas sooner or later if you decide to play reanimator. But I think it would be best to try out New Horizons. I've been playtesting it for a while and found it's pretty good. It has good games against aggro like Zoo and though they don't fare too well against CT, it's still manageable.

And I agree with the post above that you don't want to be playing Merfolk in a goblin heavy meta. However if your budget is tight, Merfolk is solid in basically every tourney. You'll want to run the UG version with Goyfs though.
