View Full Version : GPT Issue with bad decks

I don't know if it is just me, but I've noticed that really "bad" decks are somehow making it to the top 4 and top 8 of GPTs at least where I live. Mono red burn vs. mono red goblins without Aether vial, waste, or port were top 2 in one. Faeries made top 4 along with a mono black thing that resembles deadguy ale without the white both made top 4 at another. Leyline/Helm combo faced off with stifle/nought at another for 1st/2nd with Canadian Thresh coming in 4th.
Why are all these "bad" decks getting there for these GPT's? Maybe I'm just becoming frustrated. Is it just because they get overlooked since people are coming more prepared for things like reanimator and ANT right now?

How many people show up to these, and how many "good" decks are there? Sounds like the metas just aren't very competitive.

Why aren't you going to them and kicking their ass with Zoo or something?
Legacy GP trials are commonly like that. Heck, Legacy is like that.

The one that had leyline helm was around 35 - 40 people. I was playing New Horizons and got amazing pairings against a super slow Lands player and Enchantress with main deck blood moon.
It's just frustrating that I show up with a good deck that is positioned well against the established stuff, then see the random homebrews take the byes because nobody in their right mind was expecting them. Maybe I'll build a poison deck for this weekend and qualify...

I think you know what needs to be done...bring the combo. One size beats all? :-)

Thankfully the GPT I'm going to this weekend has a very well-developed metagame.

I understand your frustration anonymos, but at the same time I kinda have to LOL at it too. If you get frustrated now, you really need to consider how well you will handle a full size GP since it will be more of the same in the beginning rounds. You have to remember not everyone can afford a top tier deck, or even a decent tier 2 deck. Yes, day 2 will weed out the majority of it, butyou stll have to learn to adapt to it since you will see them D1.

I WISH I had your metagame then. Meeting random decks is the exception, not the rule, to me. :(

I have to agree. In the tournaments I've been at, I have yet to see many truly random decks. The meta is rather varied with a variety of T1 and other established deck types. I still think that a well developed meta leads to exciting tournaments because the matches are fairly well balanced.

Yeah, but duals/GPT brings out the crazies <('.'<)

Lol. When I saw this thread I thought of you/us. Low and behold, it's your thread.
At the RIW tournament, most, if not all the decks were Tier 1 or 2. Too bad Landstill bites it pretty hard to Zoo, and there was lots of Zoo, so I couldn't make it past top 4. :/
Anyways, I think part of the problem is deck choice. New Horizons was also in the top 4 at RIW, but like I stated, the metagame was what I expected. I think we need to stop showing up to these GPT's with certain decks, expecting certain decks. I think just taking a straight shot with Reanimator might get you there.
EDIT:
Also I got my car fixed. :)

My Car is broken again. ;_;
