One of the better parts of the GP last year was meeting a bunch of people I knew from the source. Is anyone who is going to the GP interested in meeting up for a cube draft or something the night before the gp to get the juices flowing?

Wouldn't mind meeting up the night before just to put some faces to the names. I'll be there. Never was big on cube drafts for some odd reason though, but I'd watch. I'm an EDH fan.

/childish giggle

But seriously, we could have a Source Lunch/Dinner or something the night before. That, or two nights prior we can go out; the convention center is close to campus of course, and I live right off it (not the night before, us asian people don't handle alcohol that well).

Only when I'm goofy as fuck after a long day (ie., the terrible experience at Philly). But I do promise if there's alcohol in me, then that might be a possibility.

I'd be game for meeting up somewhere. I'm not sure if we're planning to arrive Saturday morning or Friday some time though. I'm hoping it's the latter as a 3-4 hour drive followed by 9-10 rounds sounds like a bad day.

Can't help you with company en route, but there's a sizable clan from Erie going, if you want I can see if any of us/them has space in their room.

Unless you want to come up to Erie and you're okay with leaving your car in a random strange city for a weekend, but at that point you'r better off flying, I think.

By 'a sizable clan' I mean I know of eight, plus a few who want to go but have to see if they get scheduled off (since they work good enough jobs that they can't just tell their bosses to GTFO).

I intend to wear my black Waterford Hotel t-shirts both days of the GP, if anybody sees the logo throw up tha horns and HOLLA

I'll will certainly be there. I am already on a pleasent course of destroying my total rating of my 2 round byes (now only 1) JUST so I can play more games of this beloved format (cursed SSG opens) :-P

I don't currently have room and board, but I may have to if I make day 2 again. (it's only a 2.5 hr drive after all...)

Anyone know when the "second" main event is? Generally involving a prize of a full playset of all duals and etc? Usually there is one at every grand prix, but I couldn't find any information about it....

dinner sounds like a plan. does anyone have a cube?

Patrick
07-10-2010, 12:04 PM
I don't have a cube. Sourcers should get together about staying in the same hotel. I'm working on getting the entire Ann Arbor crew in one building for the purpose of lending/testing/sleeping arrangements. Having all the sourcers meet out for dinner Friday night would be sweet. We could use one of the hotel lobbies to do some massive testing and trading. Also, EDH and Cube are terrific ideas. Where are you all planning on staying considering there isn't an attached hotel to the venue? I'm looking at things like Hamptons and Red Roof Inns. Cheap shit.

There will be around 10 people going down from Montreal for this. If you see a tall guy tattoed with glasses that speaks french, come and present you, I'd be really glad to meet some sourcers once again. Hope to see the crew from NY state that I already know, it's always so nice to meet you guys.

And hell that I don't know what to play...

I'll likely be wearing a UC Berkeley shirt both days, gray or navy blue with a large University of California seal on the front. Short guy with wavy, almost shoulder-length blond hair. I'll have EDH on me to if someone wants to battle (though my 1v1 deck had to be dismantled because I needed some of the cards for my constructed deck, so you'll have to face the ghettotastic multiplayer Vorosh).

If Morbid- ends up deciding to let me, I'll probably try to hit the grinders on Friday.

If I can find a ridiculously over-sized foam cowboy hat for the event I'll be wearing that. But that's unlikely, so I guess you'll just have to ask everyone at the venue if they are me or not. Besides I didn't have enough time to grow a Burt Reynolds mustache. You bet your ass that will happen eventually though.

I will also be scoping out the competition during my 3 bye time. However, I plan on getting a delicious, balanced breakfast beforehand, and then proceeding to take a tremendous crap after 2 or 3 cups of coffee. It's the only way to start a magic tournament.

The food court is one floor below the GP. Prices should be normal rather than convention-center prices. I would expect places there to be open for breakfast if the convention center is remotely competent - by 8AM at the latest?

There's also the North Market a block or two from the GP (definitely worth it), as well as Starbucks, McDonalds, etc hiding around nearby.

The North Market is supposed to be open at 8AM on Saturday, so there ought to be something good for breakfast there.

If you want to eat during byes, you're probably looking more at lunch - R1 won't start until probably 10:30 at the earliest, and you're looking at 1:30 or later before R3 ends.

08-02-2010, 02:04 AM
Well, I proved yet again that I seriously need to stop playing Landstill variants. I played 4c Deedstill w wishes and drew, drew, drew. Bah. I ended each game I won with 1 second to spare almost every game. I ended up having one game draw with Jace at just enough counters to win if I had one more turn. How aggravating. I have seriously got to stop playing Control. Bad thing is I play quick too. I just have a habit of not paying attention to how much time the opponent takes since our area doesn't use timers really and don't have the habit to call judges when they start taking too long to decide. I was in a crushingly winning position every time the announcer called it and I didn't have enough time left. My god, I love this new deck. It's amazing. I even had some new tricks that I didn't even see in the other decks that placed well.

Though I did have a lot of fun anyway.

I ended up trading for my last card for a set of Three Kingdoms, soon to be posted in pimp thread. :D Since the last card was an Imperial Recruiter, I traded for an extra one to start my playset. Got rid of a bunch of CE stuff. I was so happy. Grabbed the last two cards for a complete foil Merfolk deck. Good timing on that one considering what won. A nice beat to hell Skull of Orm for EDH. 4 Foil original picture Emrakul's. Nice timing for that too. 3 more Foil Rite of Flames to make my playset. Walked away with over 1700 in cash after it was all done with nothing actually out of my pocket. Good day for me despite my crappy finish.

I was happy to see most of our group that went out do extremely well. We had one make top 16 with Dredge no less. One was close and was taken out of top 8 contention by Saito, another beat Cedrick P for a box side event sort of. lol They split, but Ced took the loss to get the free entry to next tournament. Funny thing was my friend actually had an excellent match if they had played it. Goblins isn't much of a match for that Deedstill. The rest of us did ok for the most part. It was a fun weekend.

Lastly, what the hell was with that area and having not a damned thing close by to buy things like smokes, beer, or food at? Sure, if I wanted to pay quite a bit, I could have 5 dollar beers and overly expensive hamburgers, and smokes would still be non-existent. Luckily, we found the food court below and realized that was actually the best place to eat within 1 miles.

0-3 drop, but I'm not mad about it. My three worst match ups where my first three rounds.

Round 1: 0-2 against an anti-Zoo Death and Taxes variant.
Round 2: 1-2 against Enchantress (run by a Sourcer).
Round 3: 0-2 against Ichorid.

I was running a Zoo variant that used a heavier burn compliment in an effort to improve the mirror. Unfortunately, I never faced the mirror and instead faced two essentially unwinnable matches and a Silver Knight carrying a Jitte.

But the weekend wasn't wasted. I built Vintage Dredge on site for side events and now own a real Vintage deck with Bazaars. Also got a Mox Jet for $275.

This was my first GP and it was a blast!!! (except for the car trouble)
I started day 1 7-0 and finished 7-2 :( Then day 2 went worse as i finished 8-5 and dropped. I could have stayed and made the top 64 if i finished the last 3 rounds 3-0, but i was playing poorly and making bad moves that i normally would make, and called it a day.

Overall i was very happy to make day 2 and met alot of awesome people from the source. I played against a few of you, and everyone was really friendly.
i ran a speed zoo list that i would change a few things on after the GP but it performed well.
My matches were, 1-3 byes
4-aluren W 2-0
5- NO cb/top W 2-1
6. Dredge W 2-1
7. Pat chapins brew(survival eldrazi) W 2-1
8. Lands L 0-2
9. TES L 0-2
10. Zoo L 1-2
11. Zoo W 2-1

It definately went better than 2007. I only went 3-3 (3 byes), barely getting knocked out. But Overall It went Good

I Piloted Lands. 6-3

R4 - Dredge - Win
R5 - Zoo - Win
R6 - Thopter Sword - Loss
R7 - Zoo - Win
R8 - Goblins - Loss
R9 - 4C Jace Control - Loss

The Deck Performed Very Well:
I beat dredge with Chasm Game 1, and Crypt Game 2.
I beat Zoo With Chasm Game 1 and Chasm Game 2
I lost to DJ (A Pro, not sure of his last name). Lost Game 1 to Scooping to thopter sword resolving. not enough time to finish him off game 2
I Beat Zoo with Zuran Orb chasm Lock G1 and Chasm Lock Game 2 (seems to happen a lot)
I Lost To Steve Sadin. We Mulled like crazy, and he outplayed me.
I Lost to Paulo Vitor D La Rossa (Just won the Pro Tour in Puerto Rico). Pushed G3, and he got a needle on the factories, and with 2 relics, just outplayed me...

My Dream of crushing Pro's did not happen, although I was very close each time... It was a great experience.

Props to Team FBT (Akron) - 5 Players in day 2.
Props to Glacial Chasm - Won me 5 games.
Props to John Pryor, for recommending Oblivion Stone.

Slops - All the bad hands I got this weekend.

Played aggro Pox, went 6-3. I had a lot of fun, except for one game against Belcher that turned out to be the most awkward game I've ever played. I had a ton of fun otherwise though.

Gratz to all the Sourcers who did well, especially Bryant Cook. I don't know you, man, but I feel like I owe you a high five.

Did anyone else think that venue was fucking spectacular? Seriously? The room was absurdly nice, they had the vendors up on a balcony so no careless shoppers got in the way of the action, food court was good (plus an EINSTEIN'S BAGELS in the house, epic fuck yes)....my last Wizards tourney was PT-San Diego, which was in a fucking garage, and I have to say that I liked this a lot better.

I think it was a total failure that most of us really didn't do anything together. This was the big one and we blew it.

I didn't really talk to too many people though, I'm a recluse. I thought about talking with the Hatfields, but those guys play Zoo, I don't know what we would have to discuss. I thought about talking with Geoff Smeslki, but apparently he left, I wanted to talk to Wafo-Tapa, but he only speaks English to you if he likes you, it turns out.

If we ever get another midwest Grand Prix, I think it would be great if someone [even me] put in the footwork to arranging a real meet up. I'll take the blame for now, though. I ruined everything.

Had some fun though, would have been better if I had access to the standings for longer in round 16 to learn if I could safely play the round or not. But 41st isn't too bad.

I played dredge and won the first 2 rounds against pox then lost the next 3 to belcher (0-2), mirror (0-2) and zoo (1-2). game 3 of the zoo game was especially funny as he mulls to 5 and I firestorm his board away and he still wins.
I did get to sell all the cards I had on me though and make some good cash, eat awesome thai food in a food court???, and give away a merfolk deck (minus wastes and forces) to the person who did the best in our group.
The funniest part of the trip though was when I told the guy who was 5-0 in our group and was looking to make day 2, that no matter how well he did, I was going to be leaving on Sunday around 1-2 PM. I think the crushing news caused him to lose the next 4 rounds.
Also since I wasn't going to be playing anymore, after I sold my cards, when I was walking out the door past the tables close there, I yelled "watch out, he has the force"
So overall the game has been fun, but its time for more fun.

I finished in 54th place at GP Columbus with Bant Survival, winning $200 and one pro point. I started day one 7-0, finishing 7-2. Day two I went 4-3, for an 11-5-0 overall record.

If anyone was there, I was the tall, skinny guy with the Pittsburgh Pirates cap and Leafeon ears.

I was seated next to majikal round five. I mentioned to someone that I was Kuma on The Source, and he introduced himself as majikal and asked me if I was playing what he thought I was. I said "yes, and from your shuffling it looks like you are too." We talked a lot about Bant Survival, and it was a pleasure to meet him. I know he was pulling for me day two.

I played Threshold this weekend. I started with 2 byes then played against Belcher, Belcher, TES and lost on the 1st or 2nd turn every game.

On the bright side, I top 8ed the 310 person PTQ on Sunday.

Oh, I'm glad to hear that, David! Gratz! I guess you had your revenge for the last PTQ you missed last week!

I had a really great time with sourcers once again ... Oh and by the way: Vendilion Clique > Predict.

I really wanted to go to this. I'm glad everyone had a good time.

I have yet to go to my first Grand Prix. *Sigh*.

Oh man this is funny. I got to meet Gearhart at the GP and holy crap I was not prepared for his awesomeness. He enlightened us on Legacy 3 drops and how insane Predict is. That man is entertaning as hell.

I ended up making day 2 with Dragon Stompy before folding to play mistakes. Congrats to all those names I recognized at the top tables and props to Cook.

Schmidt's Sausage Haus and Thurman's ftw.

That man should sell tickets to his Legacy discussions.

I was wondering what was up with those ears on a few people. Who was the one with Pokemon ears and tail? I was watching a few of his games since he played Storm and I love that deck.

That was yawg07. There were eight of us heading down together, and my friend, Angela, decided to make us each ears from one of the eight forms of Eevee. It was a cool way to show that we're all friends and from the same playgroup/team.

Awwww, I wish I had asked if he was a sourcer now. I bought a couple of his alts. Would have been nice to put the face to the name. Next time I'll have to say hi.
