How to play lands?? Help required!

Hey guys,

A friend of mine is giving up magic (for good this time) and has given me a Tabernacle so I'm going to attempt to make and play a lands deck.

However, Im unsure how the Chasm lock works... Do I really want to pay the 2 life upkeep everyturn or is it only when massive damage is going to be dealt to me? Is there a way around this?? Can anyone explain this to me please??

So this is the projected deck list I have in mind, please advise me of any changes that would benefit the deck.

So this is my projected deck... Does anyone see any major drama's within the deck? Should I make any changes?

Chasm helps you avoid damage that you can't already block or prevent with Maze of Ith. You play it and once the upkeep cost gets too high, you can just sacrifice it and then recycle it that same turn with Life from the Loam.

You can't really play Lands without a solid 4 Life from the Loam. It's the core of the deck. Check out the thread on Lands in the Established forum.

As for the lock: you don't have to pay life if you have at least an exploration and an active loam. It works like this:

Play chasm (sack a land)
Don't pay the upkeep, chasm goes to graveyard
Loam up chasm and the sacrificed land
Play the land
Play chasm (sack a land)
Repeat.
