The biggest downside to survival of the fittest is that they are useless in multiples. Fauna Shaman is far from it, they can either be used as a 2/2 or ditched to survival or another shaman to get what creature you want. They interact with the deck elsewhere too. They count toward a creature for vengevine and can be brought back with grave scrabbler, Volrath's Stronghold, and sword of light and shadow. Oh, and extras can be sac'd to cabal therapy or provide you with additional discard/tutor with multiples out. They can even carry a sword if needed. Most of thes things SotF can't do, but because of it's power, it's still too good not to use, though.

4x Wild Mongrel
4x Putrid Imp
4x Fauna Shaman
3x Basking Rootwalla
3x Vengevine
2x Deepcavern Imp
2x Grave Scrabbler
2x Extractor Demon
1x Big Game Hunter
1x Filth

4x Survival of the Fittest
3x Cabal Therapy
2x Sword of Light and Shadow
4x Maelstrom Pulse

1x Gaea's Cradle
2x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1x Volrath's Stronghold
4x Verdant Catacombs
4x Bayou
4x Swamp
5x Forest

Sideboard:
4x Pithing Needle
4x Duress
3x Caller of the Claw
2x Bone Shredder
2x Gatekeeper of Malakir

18 discard outlets, with 8 of them being able to tutor up whatever creature you want. Has lots of cheap efficient beats with fatties that are cheap as well.

Testing needs to be done and the sideboard needs to be sculpted, but I want to focus on the main first.

So far Fauna Shaman has been very solid. Would be interested in trying to find room for Recurring Nightmare in the deck.

Just an idea regarding your opening statement that multiple survivals are useless. You are right of course. On the other hand, if you land even 1 survival you should be winning. Also, to gain card advantage you should probably have a squee in there. Also, you probably should play Tarmogoyf.
