Twitter says the player's meeting is going on or just finishing. 1297 players, split into 2.

Pretty sure Ochoa did a mistake here, couldn't he bounce the needle eot, played Emrakul, take extra turn, draw last and DD after that to not be decked?

DDFT just Emrakuled through double Fow, Cb+top. I really lmao'ed.
The match :

Round 3 : Christian Calcano (CounterThoper) vs David Ochoa (DDFT)
G1 :
Calcano start but Mull to 5 still dropping CB by Turn2
Then he E.Tutor for Top @EOT3 of David Ochoa

After that, ggslive freeze and CB disappeared (EOT WipeAway ?!)
Then, David Ochoa Big Turn sart off by turn 5 :
4 Lands in play.
IT meets Snare
He then D.Rit, Duress (Brainstorm in resp.) showing CB, FoW, Blue Card Discarding FoW
Cabal Rit (Threshed) for DD, opp spin Top for Banked FoW…

…then David Ochoa DD again. oO;

G2 :
1st turn Top for Calcano
U.Sea=>Duress ripping CB after that

During his next turn, David Ochoa Brainstormed, land a swamp and a Top (even if he had D.Rit+DD in hand)
EOT Calcano E.Tutor for CB assembling the soft-lock during his 3rd turn.
Had Ocho gone for the DD=>Emrakul plan he'd have lost to E.Tutor for Needle save a WipeAway in the pile…

A Dark Confidant from Ochoa meet a revealed Sword of the Meek and Calcano set up his combo at his turn

The turn after that a Dark Rit meet a Pithing Needle, shutting the Emrakul plan temporaly down

Then Calcano resolved a Confidant of his own and things looked really grim from there…

G3 :
Ochoa leads with Top, Calcano Fetch a Tundra then EOT E.Tutor for (ggslive freeze) CB ? But he didn't put it into play ?!
With that (weird-) opportunity, David Ochoa taps his 3 lands casting DD at his turn
Calcano E.Tutor for Needle after reading through his opponent Library and play it on ShellDock island.

David Ochoa duress away a CB then play the Shelldock Island

I've had troubles with the streaming at this moment but the turn after that, Needle is in play, Wipe Away in the Yard and the DDFT Pilot plays Top, leaving 2 cards in his library... WHAT?!?!?

The turn after he play DoomsDay, dropping to 3 and pass (reshuffling DD, WipeAway, Duress, chaff…)

And ggslive crashed again… F**K !!!!!!!

So…. What's happened here ? WipeAway + Emrakul FTW the turn after ? Or did Calcano dropped a 2nd Needle or Cannonist during his turn ?!

Any help ?!

[Edit]Ok, I see, did he attempt to WipeAway Needle and cast Emrakul the same turn under a Cannonist and fizzle ? Lame...

Shugyosha
07-31-2010, 03:30 PM
He had two cards during EoT of Evil's turn in his library and needed three turns to get Emrakul into play and then kill his opponent in two swings. Shelldock Isle says "play" so he couldn't play Doomsday and Emrakul in the same turn and would have died of decking. Canonist and Needle were to much to deal with.

How can he float the mana after combat? He has no land then.

Yeah it was a mistake, pretty sure he was scared of Humility and bounced the land to prevent the topther player from hitting 4 mana.

It was to cut Calcano from UU who has a Counterspell in hand. Had the earlier Duress (after first Doomsday) hit Counterspell instead of Counterbalance, Ochoa would stand a chance, however, he could not have forseen a Canonist.

lolosoon
07-31-2010, 03:48 PM
Forgot he can keeps mana floating since he have to cast DD after combat... DD had no way to win then?
DD (5 cards in Library)
Untap, Shelldock Isle (3 Cards in Library) EOT Wipe Away on Needle
Cast Emrakul (2 Cards in Library)
Extra turn, attack, Annihilate the board and Cannonist (1 Card in Library)
With no lands, no Humility from Colcona
Attack and Win

OR if I miscalculated the turns and cards

Extra turn, attack, Annihilate the board and Cannonist (0 Card in Library)
Duress clearing of the Way for Doomsday
Refill and win the turn after

He should have won G2 though with an Emrakul Pile including WipeAway...

I'll repeat. What could have he countered? He won't have that UU after combat with emrakul and emrakul himself cannot be countered.

Correct me if i'm wrong but :
Why bother a dead cannonist (Annihilator 6) the turn AFTER he casts Emrakul (Time Walk) with 1 card left ?!

I don't think Cook would ever cast a Doomsday :) I don't think there is any way he isn't playing TES. But one of the trial winners was a DDFT list and looked solid except he was lacking a crucial Wipe Away in the main.

That's the sort of thing that should happen, but someone like LSV has scrubbed out of both, even with byes. I can't help feel a bit amazed at Saito's consistency at these two Legacy GPs.

BTW, check out the Round 9 feature match (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/eventcoverage/gpcol10/welcome#13), it's probably the most interesting one from day 1.

The small group that went to GP from the Lehigh area is doing fine. Matt, playing CBTop Thopter, started 5-0, but I think dropped most of his games afterward and probably won't make D2, and Allen, playing Excalibur, made D2 at 7-2 (I think, he has 21pts). Good job!

Also, Todd Anderson (SCG writer) is also 7-2 with Hypergenesis. I know this because I lent him cards through a mutual friend (Caffrey).

I find it interesting that any of the GPX players with technology can simply tune in to the coverage and find out what decks specific people are using. This is particularly true for anyone who made day two. Tomorrow, some random player could be like, "Oh, I see I am facing Patrick Chapin and I remember that he is playing Survival based on the feature match vids I watched last night." Okay, I know that this little bit of info won't help too much against an opponent of Chapin's caliber, but it is a substantial advantage that players in the first day of the tournament didn't have. I have never played in a large event before, so perhaps this type of information is more widely available than I realized...

When Chapin was at 12 with a Vial@2 and an otherwise empty board while facing attacking Lord, Mutavault and Curecatcher, I was expecting him top, rearrage and hopefully draw a 2 drop creature (Tarmogoyf or Wall of Roots) to block the Lord. He turned out to spin top after the attack and opted to search more 3cc goodies, not sure if that was an optimal play.

EDIT: WOW, he plays Fauna Shaman, so more chances to find a 2cc blocker or a Stp.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have the Top 8. Amidst a sea of American players in the heartland of America, a lone Japanese player has risen to the Top. Globetrotting Japanese pro Tomoharu Saito piloted his Merfolk deck to a near perfect record over the course of the weekend. Following in his wake are a bevy of talented players, including Tom Martell, who managed to get himself onto the train with this Top 8 performance, and Brad Nelson, who has been on what some might call "a tear" recently. In addition, Caleb Durward and his UG Madness deck that have become the Cinderella story of the tournament have made it to the elimination rounds. Three more rounds and we will be able to present you with your new Grand Prix-Columbus champion!

No mention of Bryant Cook anywhere... Grrrrrrrr.

In the deck breakdown, was TES counted as ANT or something? I didn't see TES there...

That's what I'm assuming. I mean, Evan Erwin labelled it as ANT in his pre-Columbus breakdown, and he's like god.

Yeah, they counted it as ANT. They really need to at least make an effort to learn the names of decks. I mean, they called Tempo Thresh "RUG".

5.4. Unsporting Conduct — Bribery and Wagering

Penalty
Disqualification

Definition
Wagering occurs when a player or spectator at a tournament places a bet on the outcome of a tournament, match or any portion of a tournament or match. The wager does not need to be monetary, nor is it relevant if a player is not betting on his or her own match.

Philosophy
Bribery and wagering disrupt the integrity of the tournament and are strictly forbidden.

Not sure on the complete reasoning, but it's pretty clear by the book the enalty is indeed a DQ.

There's no threat to integrity if people are betting on themselves. This seems like asinine constructionism.

+1 I predicted 2 Zoo and luckily there were 0, despite it being the most played Day 2 deck. Really cool top 8 collection of decks with 2 Storm. Props to those who predicted that.

Dude's been playing the deck for like four years. In Syracuse. Where there are like two people in the entire area with the balls to run a deck without force of will (incidently, I'm the other one. Goblins4L).

Looks like the 4 MD Innocent blood and the counter package will give a hard time to Gosselin.
