Hello,

I play MTGO and I would like to build a Legacy deck. What are some of the more affordable decks out there? I'm not saying I'm a cheapskate but some cards are just ridiculously overpriced online (FOW $80 or more for a single piece etc).

Any ideas?

Try out Aggro Elves.

No Natural Order, no Survival, just a bunch of elves and start bashing.

Black aggro with the usual creatures and discard spells. White splash for Swords, Jotun Grunt, Stoneforge Mystic and such. It has good outs against many Legacy strategies (Discard/Edicts/Gravehate maindeck, E. Plage and Perish sideboard).

Manabases can always be done without Wastelands and some shockduals instead of duals.

In real life, I think Dredge is the deck with the highest power/$$$ ratio. I don't play MTGO, but it's probably also the case there

Any way you could give us a ballpark figure of what you want to invest in?

As mentioned, Elves are really cheap, and you could make a couple variants, like aggro Elves and combo Elves. Other than Wasteland ($26 each), Goblins is really cheap. Piledriver is about $5 and Lackeys are a couple bucks.

Prices are from mtgotraders.com and are +/- $30;
Ichorid-$150
DnT-$180
Burn-not over $100
Goblins-$200

Keep in mind that DnT and Goblins both have 4 x Wasteland (c. $100). Without Wasteland, they're much cheaper. Actually, Badlands is cheaper than Wasteland, so black splash Goblins might be an option as well.

Also, a couple tips on buying. Go to TradeWarriors in the Classifieds for most commons since they sell them 100 for :1:. Also, check out supernova bots (http://www.supernovabots.com/prices_0.txt) for rares, since they're usually cheaper, and sometimes by a few tix on each rare.

I just finished Dredge today and tried a couple hands in Solitaire mode and wasn't impressed. I dredged half my deck and not one Bridge from Below. >_<

Well let's say I could invest $300 initially. I could of course invest more money later to add more expensive cards to the deck month after month.

Well then you have a lot of options. If you want to play aggro, you can buy Tarmogoyfs for about $100 (- a little)/playset and Wastelands as I said are also around $100 (+ a little). Pretty much anything without Force of Will is going to be in your budget. Some cards you may want to avoid are Vindicate, Pernicious Deed and Orim's Chant, since they're all needlessly high and not really necessary. Other cards that are niche but high in value are Survival of the Fittest, Lion's Eye Diamond and City of Traitors. That means most aggro decks are well within your budget, and even a combo deck like Belcher (including $50 LEDs) is probably just within budget as well. So what do you want to play that isn't blue?

I don't know. Something that would be fun to play but not easy. I don't want a deck where you don't need to think what to play and all you need to do is play cards from hand one by one mindlessly.

Also it would be a plus if the deck had a potential to be improved in the future (by adding more expensive cards, splashing another color etc).

What do you recommend?

Sorry, this is not going to be the advice you want, but I recommend you watch replays of the Legacy Daily Events to get an idea of what you'd like to play. Also, check out the first couple pages of the Established Decks forum and see if anything jumps out at you.

From what you described, it sounds like you may like Enchantress (a.k.a. Solitaire), which wouldn't be too expensive to build. Other options are the various kinds of non-blue aggro control, usually something like :b::g:X. or :g::w: (Knight of the Reliquary, Tarmogoyf, Swords to Plowshares, etc.). You can later upgrade an aggro-control deck to include blue and Force of Wills if you want to go in that direction.

Some decks like Death and Taxes can be fun to play and have some cool combos, and I've seen those decks tweeked to include a splash as well. Basically, the world is your oyster, so you can always homebrew with good cards. Jittes are $4 or less, Dark Confidant are less than $3 . . . there are lots of different options for aggro or aggro control. I just don't feel comfortable proposing one deck because in my opinion, even with aggro decks you need to think and it's a challenge to win consistently, so you really have to explore what you think looks like fun and makes you think, "Wow, I'd like to try that!"

My first jump into MTGO was after watching someone play Aluren, and I thought, "Wow, that's hilarious and fun, I want to try that!" so even though I couldn't afford Force of Wills or Intuitions, I picked up the rest of the deck and put in discard and Lim-Dul's Vaults for FoW and Intuition respectively. I only play it as a casual deck, but I can and will upgrade it whenever I dive in for Force of Wills. I get the same feeling when I see Sligh pound the snot out of Landstill. So, you have to look for what makes you excited to play Magic... and I don't think someone else can really advise you on that.

Enchantress is $300
Agg Loam,BGDepths and Zoo are all under $500 and Nelson's GP list can be upgraded to from BG Depths by adding $100
Elves with NO/Pro sb is under $200, If you want to add survivals add $160 for playset.
Hope this helps, pricing decks on traders is so archaic it hurts.

Ok what about this Dark Depths deck:

LANDS:
3 Wasteland
4 Verdant Catacombs
2 Bayou
6 Swamp
3 Forest
3 Dark Depths

CREATURES:
4 Dark Confidant
4 Tarmogoyf
3 Vampire Hexmage
4 Vampire Nighthawk

SORCERY:
4 Duress
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Living Wish
4 Grim Discovery

INSTANT:
4 Smother
4 Diabolic Edict

SB:
1 Dark Depths
1 Wasteland
1 Vampire Hexmage
4 Krosan Grip
8 other cards

This would fit into my budget even with a reserve. 4 Wastelands and 4 Tarmogoys are $200, Fetchlands and 2 bayou are about $45 together and the rest is pretty cheap. Plus I got a VIP discount at mtgotraders so I would get -10% off the total price so an extra Bayou or two could possibly fit in the budget.

What do you say?

Not bad, but I would choose Diabolic Edict over Cruel Edict if you can afford it. Cruel is actually a sorcery, not an instant. I've never played this deck nor played against it, so sorry, I don't have any other input.

Me neither :)

But I have been watching some Legacy matches in the Tournament practice room and I think I like the green/black color combination so I guess I will try to build some deck in those colors. I will also look at dredge decks because they are also b/g most of the time.
