View Full Version : [Deck] Time of Cthulu, or how I learned to stop worrying and build UG Reanimator

Looking at how good reanimator was, and how good Show and Tell is, and at how the deck pretty much fell off the face of the earth after Mystical Tutor got banned, I got bored and looked for ways to make it work again and found this:
Time of Need 1G
Sorcery
Search your Library for a Legendary creature card and put it into your hand.

This lets you use personal tutor to find both halves of the combo i.e. the creature and the card that puts the monster into play.

List looks something like this:

Preanimation Spells
4x Show and Tell
2x Natural Order

Library Search
4x Personal Tutor
3x Time of Need
1x Living Wish
4x Brainstorm

Alt Win Cons
4x Tarmogoyf
1x Vendilion Clique
2x Jace, the Mind Sculptor

Tutor Targets
1x Life from the Loam
1x Iona, Shield of Emeria
1x Progenitus
1x Emrakul, the Aeons Torn

Acceleration
4x Noble Hierarch
3x Wall of Roots

Protection
4x Force of Will
4x Daze

Lands
1x Dryad Arbor
3x Wasteland
4x Misty Rainforest
1x Verdant Catacombs
1x Windswept Heath
4x Tropical Island
1x Tundra
1x Savannah
1x Island
1x Forest

Sideboard
4x Rhox War Monk
1x Llawan, Cephalid Empress
1x Venser, Shaper Savant
1x Morningtide
1x Bojuka Bog
3x Krosan Grip
4x Leyline of Sanctity

The plan vs. aggro is to bring War Monks in for Force of Will and just try to hold off the ground assault with goyfs, walls, and monks while your big monster wins through. This version of the list is 62 cards, so some stuff needs to go, but I think it's getting closer. Big props to Sam for the "preanimation" name and some solid deck suggestions. I have no idea what the final living wish/time of need split count should be, or if the deck should run both. This is still immensely a work in progress. Thanks to all for all suggestions so far. Keep 'em coming.

You talk about Time of Need in the beginning, but your list doesn't show it. Care to explain?

I like the concep though.

I tried out snt/no for a while...here's my thread for reference: http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?18180-NOSnT-Big-Labor&p=471529#post471529. I ended up discarding it in favor of dedicated snt as natural order is awful vs. zoo if they play correctly (this also affects snt vs. zoo since the vulnerability of mana dorks is half the problem)...also natural order being 4cc instead of 3 is very relevant vs. merfolk/new horizons. As far as time of need is concerned, living wish and worldly tutor were tested since 90% of the time you want emrakul, but I decided they were too slow. You're not running ponder though so it might be acceptable.

Questionable choices imo:

1) Daze: Natural order is already slow and this card isn't helping that. It's really unplayable until you go for the combo...and on turn three there's a good chance they'll have a mana open. Thoughtseize is needed in the deck now...between people playing emrakul and decks like aluren, hive mind, and dream halls I wouldn't play snt w/o thoughtseize main and either duress or cabal therapy in the board.

2) Wasteland/life from the loam/sylvan scrying: What? Loam is understandable but I don't see how it wouldn't be too slow. Scrying would be reasonable with a city of traitors in the main. Wasteland is completely counterproductive.

3) Jace the mind sculptor: Huh? You have it listed under library filters...um...merfolk/new horizons are the problem matchups out of the commonly played decks. Zoo and goblins are also going to be a problem for you due to their speed...tendrils variants are no walk in the park and jace helps in none of these matchups.

I would concur, that Living Wish > Time of Need.

4 Jaces is major overkill, and extremely slow for a deck with this plan imo.

Try out Ponders.

I'm running a very similar deck except running xantid swarm instead of wall of roots. It has helped out considerably.

This looks really interesting. You should call it Preanimator. :)

I'd look at it like this:

"Preanimation Spells"
4x Show and Tell
2x Natural Order

Library Filters
4x Personal Tutor
4x Time of Need
4x Brainstorm
2x Jace, the Mind Sculptor

Tutor Targets
3x See Beyond
1x Life from the Loam
1x Sylvan Scrying
1x Reverent Silence (It kills Counterbalance better)
1x Vendilion Clique
1x Iona, Shield of Emeria
1x Progenitus
1x Emrakul, the Aeons Torn

Acceleration
4x Noble Hierarch
4x Wall of Roots

Protection
4x Force of Will
4x Daze

Lands
1x Bojuka Bog
1x Karakas
1x Dryad Arbor
3x Wasteland
4x Misty Rainforest
1x Verdant Catacombs
1x Windswept Heath
4x Tropical Island
1x Island
1x Forest

Sideboard
Meta-dependent

Sure, Reverent Silence kills CB, but you need to resolve your Personal Tutor first and it costs 1. Seems difficult.

I thought that was the reason the OP list included Break Asunder. Because otherwise it's going to cost 5 to do the same thing.

Thanks all, good ideas all around. Preanimation is a great name Sam, I added it to the original post. Please, keep the ideas coming on this. I do like the fact that you can play a wasteland/loam/jace2/goyf backup plan with this configuration very easily. Probably needs Karakas in the main or side since you can use it to make Clique dodge every kind of removal that doesn't have split second.
