Cobra Trap

If my opponent attacks/burns my planeswalker, removing enough loyalty counters to kill it, can I pay the trap cost?

I'm pretty sure it's destroyed by state-based effects that no one controls, but I want to make sure.

It's a state-based action, just like damage on an animated manland vs Sacred Ground.
