Well, I knew this tournament had been coming up for a while, and I decided to see how I could do with Belcher. Yeah, my "counterspells" we 6 Pyroblasts.
The day starts out by me being a bit tired. I'm on drumline, and my school had a game last night, which resulted in me being there at school until 11:15. Then, I wake up at 7:00 the next morning cause I can't sleep any later than that for some reason. Oh well. I do a little homework, make sure I got my 75 plus some extras in case I feel like switching something around at some point, and head over around 2 to test a little and watch some Vintage shens.
I buy a couple sideboard cards, borrow 2 Chrome Mox and 1 Taiga from a couple friends (replacing 2 Street Wraiths and a Stomping Ground) and my list becomes the following:
1 Taiga
4 Chrome Mox
4 Lotus Petal
4 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Elvish Spirit Guide
4 Land Grant
4 Lion's Eye Diamond
4 Rite of Flame
4 Tinder Wall
4 Desperate Ritual
4 Pyretic Ritual
4 Manamorphose
4 Seething Song
4 Goblin Charbelcher
4 Burning Wish
3 Empty the Warens
Sideboard:
3 Pryoblast
3 Red Elemental Blast
4 Nature's Claim
1 Reverent Silence
1 Pyroclasm
1 Hull Breach
1 Goblin War Strike
1 Empty the Warrens
Pretty standard, nothing too fancy.
Round one - Alex A. with Merfolk.
G1: He wins the roll. He lays down an island and passes. I start making mana for T1 belcher, with daze backup in the form of ESG. He dazes, I exile, he forces. Can't rebuild, I get beat down.
IN - 1 Empty the Warrens, Pyroblast
OUT - 4 Wish, 1 Pyretic, 1 Manamorphose, 1 Seething Song
G2: I make 8 tokens turn one, they get there.
G3: Basically I slow roll him. He's not putting on a lot of pressure, and I have a REB in hand, so every time he dazes I just stop and wait til I have and extra red for the REB. I eventually get out a Blecher and activate for 50ish damage.
2-1, 1-0
Round two - Adam Prosak with Countertop
We shake hands, I congratulate him on his finish at the SCG open, we throw some cards at each other, and we're off.
G1: He goes land, Top. I start out with Petal, Spirit Guide, Desperate Ritual. He taps the top to draw a card. It resolves. Seething Song, Seething Song, Belcher, activate from >20.
See round one for boarding.
G2: He plays a land and says go. I try to make some mana, he spell snares. I try to rebuild, but make a huge punt but imprinting a Spirit Guide that I needed to get to 2, when I should have imprinted Seething Song. I sit there and draw until I have some mana ready and a pyroblast. I do stuff, he plays Counterspell, I Pyroblast it, he counters back. Pretty anticlimactic as far as first time countering a spell goes. He lays down CounterTop and the Trinket Mage/Clique beats and we go to game 3.
G3: He counters some stuff, lays down Pithing Needle, and later on EE for 0. I go all in with... ESG. Next turn, SSG. I start swinging in, but he already has a Clique and a T. Mage beating down, and I need a REB to be able to race him, but I don't draw it an he wins the slightly awkward race. It was really nice playing and meeting him, he's a way cool guy. Ended up splitting for first, congrats on that.
1-2, 1-1
Round three ? (sorry! cool dude though) with Belcher.
We know we're the two Belcher players in the room, and it's kinda ridiculous. I think we finished first. Hmm, that's weird.
G1: He wins the roll, I cry a little, but it's okay because his T1 14 Gobbos < My T1 belcher with Taiga on the field.
No boarding.
G2: He goes 4 mana, Belcher with 3 cards in hand, and I'm sweating. Then he land grants, revealing 2 Chrome Mox and I breathe a sigh of relief as I have 7 mana and a Belcher in hand. Unfortunately, my 8th cards down was Taiga, and he gets 3 mana again before me.
G3: 7 are Wish, Wish, Mox, Mox, Tinder Wall, SSG, Belcher. I miss the fact that I can't make green, keep, imprint both Wishes, realize I can't make green and pass. He makes 10 Gobbos. By the time I can make green, I'm at 10 and I'm one turn short of activating. Oh well, the bad luck and lack of sleep puts me out of top 4 range, but I stay in cause I like playing cards.
1-2, 1-2
Round 4: Jacob with Zoo.
Jacobs a real cool guy, he's 2-1, and I know I can't get in, so I just scoop to him in hopes that he'll get in. We play it out and I win T1 both games.
0-2, 1-3
Overall it was fun. I think with some slightly better luck in round 3 on G2 I might have had a chance of getting into the top 4, but oh well. Obviously the deck isn't the best, it's just a deck I'm using while building TES. It's brutally fast though and really consistent, and the fact that I was able to beat Merfolk of all things kinda gives me hope that deck is halfway decent.
Props:
Lots of Belcher hands
Slow rolling actually working
Having to mul either 0 or 1 times
Cool opponents
Friends letting me borrow a couple things, thanks a bunch
Amazing Discoveries for being a cool store
AZ Iced Tea
Slops:
I'm stupid
