After going 5 0 in Legacy at Pro Tour Amsterdam side event and only winning 16 boosters I was up for another tournament, one with a better price distribution. I planned on playing the same 75 as I did the week before and I did, Vengevine Survival or Survival Madness, whatever people want to call it.

My 75:

4 Wasteland
4 Misty Rainforest
4 Tropical Island
4 Forest
3 Island
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Basking Rootwalla
4 Wild Mongrel
4 Vengevine
4 Noble Hierarch
1 Wonder
4 Force of Will
4 Brainstorm
4 Survival of the Fittest
3 Stifle
3 Daze
2 Umezawa's Jitte

Side:
4 Tormod's Crypt
4 Spell Pierce
3 Krosan Grip
2 Submerge
2 Trygon Predator

There are a lot of changes and weird things to this deck compared to the original list, mainly Tarmogoyf and Brainstorm.
But the biggest issue just looking at the decklist is the number of blue cards, 15, which is low for a deck running Force of Will. Anyway, the deck speaks for itself, off to the report!

It was Sunday morning 9 o'clock. I got up, did the things you do in the morning, walk the dog and when I come home again Wim has already arrived. That'll be the people going, me and Wim. Wim is playing UWR CB control with a lot of hate towards creature decks. I grab the GPS, which I didn't have last time and caused me to get lost for about 15 minutes, getting there to late and getting a round1 loss. Not this time! So I drive us there through the rain. Wim makes his deck in the car and writes his decklist on site. We get there around 10.30, thirty minutes early. I check around a bit and talk to the people I know.

We get seated. A total of 56 people showed up which is around average for Mol. People from the Netherlands seem to be missing as well as most from Ghent. Guess they had better things to do. Pairings get posted quite the time after due to the slow printer and printing result entry slips first.

Round1:
I recognise the face but can't put a deck on him. Turns out he plays Landstill. I roll a 4, he rolls a 3.
Game1:
I open with Noble Hierarch. He drops a fetchland. I play Survival, he fetches and tries to Spell Snare but I Daze it. Survival resolves, the turn after a Vengevine comes in but it gets a StP. He can't deal with the other 2 the turn after and we go to Game2:
I get down a Wild Mongrel which gets in for some damage. I hardcast a Vengevine which gets countered. My second Vengevine gets countered as well but when I cast Noble Hierarch, Wild Mongrel they come back anyway. He gets down his 6th land and plays Vedalken Shackles. He only has three Islands so I let it resolve. He tries taking Wild Mongrel so I discard two cards to give it 4 power and attack for lethal the turn after.

1-0

Round2:
I get paired against a teammate, Tim Steurs and I know he's playing Merfolk. I lose the die roll by rolling a 6.
Game1:
He kept a slow hand and can't attack with his Cursecatcher due to my Basking Rootwalla. Not much action from him and when I draw enough backup I run Survival which gets stopped after a double Force of Will from him. I drop the second Survival the turn after and ride Vengevines to victory.
Game2:
He has turn 1 Relic but it doesn't do enough against Noble in Jitte + Basking. Umezawa's Jitte wins the game against Merfolk easily.

2-0

Round3:
Paired against Yves Verlaine. He's always played Goblins and I doubt he'll ever stop playing it.
Game1:
He mulligans to 5, knowing what I'm playing or just having bad hands. I fetch a Tropical on purpose and drop a Noble Hierarch. I Brainstorm the turn after, fetch again and drop Survival. I Daze a Piledriver and start bringing in Vengevines. Yeah he didn't win that one.
Game2:
He keeps his 7 this time but doesn't have a turn1 play. I get down a Tropical and pass, keeping Stifle open but he drops Piledriver. I drop Wild Mongrel. He drops a Warchief but doesn't attack since he'll lose the Warchief. I drop Umezawa's Jitte next turn. He drops a Sharpshooter, attacks and I block the Warchief. He pings it, I discard 2 cards, after damage he pings again and I discard yet another card. Seems a bad trade but having Mongrel and an active Jitte should win the game. I attack, get Jitte counters and pass the turn. He drops Matron getting a Wort. I Wasteland one of his two Badlands, attack again and destroy his board with the counters. He never finds the second colored mana source or a 4th land to activate his hand of 2 Chieftain, Warchief, triple Ringleader and Wort.
Umezawa's Jitte is so good!

3-0

Round4:
I know this guy and I know that he plays Merfolk. I don't know what it is but I actually dislike him. I saw him the first time about 2 years ago when I started playing Stormcombo, still UWB AnT at that time and I already found him anoying. The weird thing is that I don't really know him though, he could be a funny guy or a nice guy. But who am I to talk I guess. So if you're reading this, no personal grudge!
Game1:
I win the die roll. I open with Island and pass the turn. He drops Island Cursecatcher. I have an aggressive hand of Tarmogoyf, Tarmogoyf, Wild Mongrel, Daze and land. I realize that if he has the Daze I can Daze back but he can sacrifice Cursecatcher to get his one through. It's all solved by me drawing a second Daze for the turn and after the dust settled the board was empty except a nice 3/4 Tarmogoyf. I get in twice, drop Mongrel, attack again and drop the Second Tarmogoyf. He dies two turns later.
Game2:
He gets down a Cursecatcher which I let resolve. I drop an Island. He drops Mutavault and attacks for 1. I Brainstorm and fetch. He gets in for another 3 damage and drops a second mutavault. I drop Wild Mongrel, he Forces but I Force back. His assault is halted due to this and he just drops a third Mutavault, clearly lacking the second blue. I get down Jitte and he misses his land drop again. I get Jitte active and that's basicly the game. I have 4 Jitte counters after 2 attacks. He drops Correlhelm Commander which I kill before the second level up.
Umezawa's Jitte > Merfolk.

4-0

Round5:
There's only 3 people with 4 0 and 1 with 3 0 1. I get paired against another 4 0 and can draw. The other 4 0 was playing BUGStill but lost to Emperial Painter who had to play.
4 0 1

Round6:
I'm paired against the BUGstill player. I offer the draw but he sais he needs the win. I want him in the top8 since he's decent against combo and I should win against him. But there are two teammates who'll end 4 1 1 and need to slip in. I'm not a yerk so the draw is fine for me but I won't scoop and kick a teammate out. He understands and wants to play then, knowing that the matchup favors me.
Game1:
Stifle on the fetch into a turn2 Survival with Daze for his Force gets me 2 Vengevines on turn4. He gets a Deed on board but I have double Wasteland to keep him of his 4 mana and he scoops them up.
Game2:
I offer him the draw again but he declines. I get down a Survival but put him on Extirpate so don't go for the kill. He taps 4 for Jace, Brainstorms and tries to fetch for another land which I Stifle. He doesn't have a black source now and I get Vengevines in play. I basicly won the game but offer the draw yet again. This time he accepts. I wish him good luck with his resistance.

4 0 2

Top8 is announced. Me, Rolf (playing TES) and Peter (Emperial Painter) from our team got in. Johan (BUGStill) didn't by ending 9th. The other BUGStill player that I drew with got 7th place.

QF:
I'm playing against Emperial Painter.
Game1:
We both mulligan to 6 first with me on the play but I have to go down to 4 and open Fetchland, Noble, Wild Mongrel, Daze. I fetch a Forest after some thinking, declining to have a Daze open as he runs 8 Blood Moon effects and 4 Bolts to kill the Noble. He drops City of Traitors, SDT and uses it. I drop Wild Mongrel after drawing FoW. He doesn't drop a land and passes back. I draw another Wild Mongrel. He tops again but can't seem to find any business. I keep attacking until he drops Ancient Tomb over his City for god knows what reason and starts taking extra damage. I discard cards to get lethal damage in and we're off to game2.
Game2:
I keep a sketchy hand of 3 Forest, Island, Fetch, Noble and Spell Pierce. Since I run only 19 lands I reckon that mulliganing to 6 will give me trouble on my manabase and as he is running 8 Blood Moon effects I'm hoping he kept a hand that's strong on that. He just plays Mountain SDT. I drop Noble after drawing another land. He drops nothing and passes back. I get a second Noble and hit for 2. He uses SDT and Bolts a Noble. I draw a third Noble and hit again. He doesn't do anything during his turn. I attack for another 2 but he gets Painter down. I attack, he thinks and then blocks. One can try. So far I'm still only holding lands and that Spell Pierce. He drops Grindstone which I Spell Pierce to keep him off activating it now. I don't draw the Krosan Grip and I get decked.
Game3:
I keep a one lander with double Brainstorm, Krosan Grip, Noble, Wild Mongrel, Tarmogoyf. I don't hit a land but he doesn't do much either except casting a Blood Moon. I Brainstorm 2 turns later finding my Forest. I cast Wild Mongrel which gets in once but his army starts growing. I struggle to find a third land while he has Painter, 3 Emperial Recruiter and Magus but he's not attacking due to Mongrel. My Tarmogoyf gets stopped by a Blast. I get a third land and get rid of the Painter at the end of his turn, knowing he has another but I have another Grip. He attacks with everything and I know he to have the Bolt. I block Magus and discard a Vengevine. He Bolts. I ask what the situation is and he sais we are in declare blockers step. I call the judge overviewing our match aside and ask if I have to assume he's playing the Bolt in response to my Mongrel trigger or not. The judge sais I should verify with the other player.
I sit down and think for 5 seconds and act like I need to space in again. I ask 'So Mongrel is a 3/3 with Bolt on stack right?' He answers yes and the judge cuts in asking if the Mongrel trigger resolved. Again my opponent answers yes. I discard another card and trade with the Magus, putting me at 8.

I cast a Brainstorm finding Brainstorm, Noble and Survival. I cast the Survival. I get attacked down to 3. I untap and redraw my Brainstorm. I need three blockers and there's one Vengevine in the Graveyard but only having one Forest limits me. I know that the top card is a Krosan Grip so I discard Noble Hierarch to get Basking Rootwalla and a shuffle. I play Brainstorm hoping to hit Forest and a Wild Mongrel. I draw slowly ... Forest! That's one.... Tarmogoyf .... Wild Mongrel. I put back a card and then Tarmogoyf on top. Play Mongrel, discard Rootwalla to it and bring in the Vengevine. He draws and passes back. I draw Tarmogoyf and pass. He passes again. I discard, get Vengevine, discard, get Vengevine. I untap, discard Vengevine, get Rootwalla. I draw a Rootwalla for the turn and realise that discarding Vengevine for Wonder will win the game. I discard Vengevine... but notice I sideboarded out the Wonder, 3 Vengevines will have to do. I attack and he triple blocks with his 3 Recruiters, leaving him at 14 as before. He draws, drops land but passes again. I draw Force of Will and attack with 3 Vengevine and Mongrel. He offers the Magus as a trade with Mongrel and I'm fine with it. He draws and extends his hand.

Afterwards the judge asks me why I didn't attack with the Rootwalla's as well, forcing him to block with the Painter, limiting his outs to only Lightning Bolt. I tell him that I wanted the Painter to live since it makes everything blue and enables the Force of Will in my hand. Even though his number of outs are greater, I can Force it anyway.

Semifinal:
I have to play Rolf. He's playing TES, I think the same list as Bryant Cook.
Game1:
I keep a one lander but have Force, Daze and Brainstorm with double Basking Rootwalla and Wild Mongrel. Tropical into a Rootwalla is my play. He plays a 2nd land and plays Duress, taking Force of Will. I Brainstorm but hit no land and have to switch my game plan to Rootwalla beatdown. He Silences, I Daze and he pays. He casts stuff, plays LED LED, Burning Wish discarding Infernal Tutor. I ask him what he's getting and he sais IGG. I scoop them up.
Game2:
I keep a hand of Wasteland, Spell Pierce, Spell Pierce, Force of Will, Force of Will, Noble Hierarch, Tarmogoyf. You read that right, I kept that hand. He plays Volcanic Island, Ponder. I thinker about Wastelanding that but he can't cast protection of it so I don't care. I don't draw the land and have to pass. He Brainstorms, fetches a Tropical and plays Xantid which I have to Force. I Wasteland that, afraid of more Xantid's. He drops a land, plays Cahnt which I force and then LED, Petal, Dark Ritual and holding 2 cards. I try to bluff thinking out loud 'so you need Duress, Infernal... He doesn't take it and goes for it then thinking about just going Empty the Warrens instead of Ad Nauseam but he goes for it again which, at 19, is the right decision. He reveals some junk but also Chrome Mox, double Rite of Flame, Burning Wish and double LED. He stops and I extend the hand.

I get two Wooded Foothills for my trouble. I finish my Ice Tea, talk a bit with the people still hanging around and drive home. Wim ended 4 2, losing to Stormcombo and Zoo. He's still happy with his performance after being out of the game for some months. We talk a lot during the drive home. I come home, eat and watch some TV after another fun day!

Afterthought:
If I'll play this deck again I'll probably cut the Tormod's Crypt from the side. They are there for the mirror and Ichorid. Yet everyone sided in graveyard hate and I never lost due to my opponent having such hate. An extra Submerge would be better for the Mirror. And Ichorid just isn't worth the effort.

Nice report man, I saw you play, well done!!

I didn't do so well with my own vengevine survival deck that day (Pro GW Survival going 3-3). I lost to both Rolf and Peter with little to no answers to their deck. I also lost to a mirror due to crappy mulligans. Won to Sneak and Tell, 4c Landstill and Eva Green. I was hoping to see more aggro as my deck had a really good matchup against them, no such luck. Fun tournament though.

I think I'll play your list next time :)

cheers

Nice report, but sorry about the prize support. Winning two Wooded Foothills in a field of fifty-six players after making Top Four seems a little unfortunate, to me.

It's ok. Beter than going 5 0, ending third on resistance and seeing the first getting 16 boosters and the 10 duals, the second 16 boosters and 10 foil Ravnica Shock duals and me just getting 16 boosters. That was bad price support :p.
