The new Metalcraft cards are getting attention from one deck - Affinity. However, I think there's room for more creativity. I present to you - METAL SLIGH.
// Lands
4 [UNH] Island
4 [UNH] Mountain
4 [MR] Seat of the Synod
4 [DS] Darksteel Citadel
4 [MR] Great Furnace
// Creatures
4 [ROE] Kiln Fiend
4 [ALA] Master of Etherium
4 [SOM] Memnite
4 [SOM] Etched Champion
4 [TO] Grim Lavamancer
// Spells
4 [AP] Fire/Ice
4 [MR] Thoughtcast
4 [M11] Lightning Bolt
4 [SOM] Galvanic Blast
4 [MR] Shrapnel Blast
The numbers are very preliminary, as it is just in development stages. However, early testing has shown promise.
Some thoughts:
1. While Master of Etherium and Etched Champion are powerful cards on their own, having a 3cc cost might slow the deck down too much. I'd love to see some more good Metalcraft creatures come out in blue and red, however...
2. Can I possibly splash a 3rd color here? With a manabase of 3 each of the artifact lands, plus a combination of 3+3+2 basics? (btw, I'm trying to keep the manabase as cheap as possible, though running duals are of course your option). For that 3rd color, I'm looking at Green and Carapace Forger, primarily. With Krosan Grip out of the board.
3. Mox Opal? I'm not too keen on running conditional mana in a deck that seeks to squeeze everything out of all the mana available to it. However, as a 2-of, it might be a good fit.
Oh, and the obligatory "Why play this over deck X". Well, Zoo can only dream of running burn spells at 4 for R and 5 for 1R. Goyf Sligh/Mono-Red Sligh's creatures easily get outcalssed if dragged into midgame.Affinity has no reach aside from Disciple+Ravager. So why not play this deck? Apart from that it's untested, the deck now has all the problems of a Sligh deck and an Affinity deck.
Like I said, very preliminary draft. The optimized decklist could very well be much, much different from how it stands right now, but I just wanted to throw the Metalcraft Sligh idea out here.
