We are now holding Legacy tournaments on Saturdays at 2pm at All-Star Cards in Los Angeles. Prize pool is 1 pack per person. So for example if 8 people play that's 8 packs for the prize pool. Usually 1st-3rd place, possibly more if more people play. This is a great time to practice your legacy decks for the big tournaments and get some extra boosters if you do well. Hope to see you there!
PS. We also have a Standard event @2:30pm and a multiplayer event @1pm on Saturdays for $5 (same prize support)
8 people makes it sanctioned!

EDIT: Clarification
Are these Standard boosters?
$5 entry for $4 payout.
Count me out.

@ruckus: I think you may misunderstand the prize payout. For example if 8 people are playing (which will be sanctioned btw):
That's 1 pack of M11 or Scars per person in the prize pool (8 packs)
Most likely the prize structure would be:
1st place - 5 packs
2nd place - 2 packs
3rd place - 1 pack
Or 4,3,1 etc... Obviously the more people that play the better the payout.
Perhaps you didn't understand what I was saying.
For 8 people, you take in $40 and pay out packs worth $32.
This is unusual, most shops rake in and cash out equivalent amounts.

idk about that. the tournie's i've been going to rake in about 1000 to 1200 and give about 700 to 800 in prizes. and the larger scg and mox events gain a large profit as well. a 60 man tournie in sd earned 1200 but gave out 2 $300 moxes. there's a bit of incentive to holding the tournie with all the extra work.
Prize pool is 1 pack per person.
Context is tech.

This is true, but stores do not pay full retail price for packs. It's more like $2.25/pack (assuming a box costs $80). So the prize payout is less than 50%.

Did they rent a hall? Gaurentee the prize payout? Hire extra staff or pay for product and hotel for judges?

Exactly.
I don't mean to be harsh, and I wanted to keep my own opinions out of this thread since I believe it was created in earnest, but this is the same store that ebays all the box sets it receives, and keeps FNM promos when turnout isn't high enough. I don't know who JennyMagic is, but I know that the owner is more interested in selling boosters at or above retail than building the magic community.

Dang, I didn't realize the harsh reputation this place had. In terms of the prizes, I didn't believe it was bad, but if the other stuff is true, then I can understand.

Try and model your tournaments after Knight Ware.
For small tournies (aka non Mox/duals), building up players is the best way to do it. You will sell a lot of singles, have them sold to you, it will be good. Don't go for the profit.
Now when you've established a Legacy scene, holding the "smaller" tournaments once a month or so (50 people and lower, prizes should be like a pair of Seas for 1st and a good Top 8 look at the Knight Ware tournaments for good prize structure for these), you should start looking into acquiring a complete set of Duals, all 40, use those (in sets of 4 ) for a top 8 tournament. Or start looking into getting pieces of Power to use as prizes. These you have to rent a hall to fit 100 or so people and you can make a profit here. Remember to give your judge some money. Please get a real judge.
This is a recipe for all stores, not just All Star.
