serum powder

I found this interesting list with sideboard serum powders. Does anyone understand the rationale for this?

http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=21660

Creatures
4 Carnophage
4 Nantuko Shade
4 Order of the Ebon Hand
4 Stromgald Crusader

Enchantments
4 Sarcomancy

Instants
4 Dark Ritual

Legendary Artifacts
4 Umezawa's Jitte

Sorceries
4 Duress
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Unmask

Basic Lands
16 Swamp

Lands
4 Wasteland

Sideboard:
3 Cursed Scroll
4 Serum Powder
4 Engineered Plague
4 Leyline of the Void

This thread is not to discuss the list, but rather the sideboard serum powder choice.

That was while Flash was legal, so they are to have more chance to draw a Leyline.

I don't know exactly where you're going with this JJ, but I like it.

I can see Serum Powder being really good if your SB strategy is ensure that you get a certain card in the opener for games 2 and 3 (like Leylines, Trinisphere, Chalice, etc.)

You could run a Leyline based sideboard including Leyline of the Void and Leyline of Sanctity along with Serum Powder but it's probably not a good idea since both of those are pretty narrow in their application. You'd have like, what? Three slots in your board left for other decks? The only time this might be a good idea is if you were playing some of those maindeck like in a Leyline of the Void/Helm of Obedience combo deck that was already playing Serum Powder and Leyline of the Void maindeck.

If you really, really hate to take a mulligan, (and I mean REALLY hate to take a mulligan) you should play this card. Hell, forget the sideboard and just move it into your maindeck! It doesn't matter which deck you are playing.
