Just a request to anyone playing at this tournament.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring your hate cards with you. Don't expect SCG to have the cards you need, because they haven't in the past.

Please bring a complete decklist.

Although, that doesn't really make much of a difference since the Ban List announcement comes out on Dec 1st.

Although, that doesn't really make much of a difference since the Ban List announcement comes out on Dec 1st.

The ban list is announced Dec 20th but won't take affect until Jan 1st, so it'll still be roaming this tournament.

Top 16? Pssh. At the rate we're getting coverage of these opens, Top 8 is a gift

Your standard 50%+ Vengevine Top 8 with miscellaneous decks that match up well against Vengevine (and dirt, as U/W Tempo made it there too).

This tournament was a complete wash. Aside from the Invitational and Standard event the day before (which were very intriguing), the Legacy event had mediocre coverage and just about half the field ran Survival. There was a time and a place when it took a very skilled pilot to make that card work as best as it possibly could (people like Di), whereas now anyone (apparently) can pick up the deck and do extraordinarily well with it.

It just blows my mind sometimes how this game unfolds as the years go by.

Hey:

I know it's a favor to ask, but we keep track of all cards that players request at our booth, but we do not normally stock. If any given card shows up a number of times, we make sure to permanently include it in the show stock. If you have a list that you could give me (either here or through PM or through e-mail - Ben@starcitygames.com) of cards you feel we should have, but we have not had in the past, I would very much appreciate it!

I still think the non-Vengevine versions require some skill to pilot. You need make a decision with what to get with Squee, how to stabilize, what synergies are available in the deck.

This is the primary reason I think WOTC will ban Survival and fuck up in the process, because they don't have any goddamn memory of what the card was like before Vengevine came along. Always paying attention to now rather than anything else. You are right, I've read old threads from Di about ATS and it's really sad to see that kind of history go away at the hands of some Mythic Rare. These are not the same types of decks now; when will they realize what is the actual enabler of the combo in the Survival-Vengevine synergy. Such is the day now, I guess. Money and kids whining are always going to be the top priorities of WOTC now.

I'm already looking for a new deck to play.

Those variations, perhaps. But in this instance Vengevine just completely overshadows any and all doubt of how good that deck can really be. Half the players running that deck probably have never played Survival in their lives and only recently picked it up like a cheap whore to exploit it. I still think "Classic Survival" was a true testament to decision making as it pertains to Magic and this only destroys a legacy (no pun intended) of a card that really require(d) a great deal of skill to abuse.

Agreed Hollywood as much as it pains me to say it wizards just doesn't care about the eternal formats, and it will not be to my surprise that they ban survival for fear of banning a "standard" card instead even though the standard card is entirely the problem and not allow people to have fun in the format where having fun being able to play pretty much anything is the norm. I have seen my fair share of good survival players and have played against too many old school lists to remember and it will be a sad thing to see it go. This isn't supposed to be a format where scrubby mcscrubberson should be able to pick up the "best" deck and just get there with, it generally requires innovation and severe playtesting and understanding of the format to get to that point of breaking through onto the podium. Personally I am sick of all the whining that people that know nothing of this format are doing because they cannot comprehend how to beat a deck that requires you to stick an enchantment that is no more broken that it ever has been and to untap with it to boot can be stopped. It is a travesty and I will end the rant here by simply saying R.I.P. survival I look forward to the day you are unbanned.

Another funny tidbit about the featured coverage of this event: if you go to Star City's website, you'll notice that there are rounds of coverage that are either purposely missing or just left out for no reason what so ever, but it could have been very likely that those rounds without coverage were Survival mirrors and added no flavor to the overall complexity and intrigue of the event.
