Hyggemagic.dk 9.0 (Legacy @ Gun Zone Aarhus, Denmark) 2010-OCT-16

Hello everybody!
This report serves two purposes; show the world, that legacy is a very popular format in Denmark and of course tell about my own tournament experience. Hyggemagic (can be loosely translated into “cosy magic”) is series of small to medium sized tournaments (25-50 attendees), which is held app. once a month. Even though the name might indicate something else, the tournaments are quite serious and usually feature a high average skill level. We usually have a very diverse and unpredictable meta, so the deck choice was purely based on personal preference. 31 players showed up; 27 Danes and 4 Germans.

Complete break down of the tournament can be found here (http://www.hyggemagic.dk/?side=20101016-res)
Top-8 deck lists can be found here (http://www.hyggemagic.dk/?side=20101016-decklists)

Here is my list:

Aeon Bridge
4x Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
4x Phyrexian Dreadnought
4x Brainstorm
4x Ponder
4x Lim-Dul's Vault
4x Show and Tell
4x Stifle
4x Force of Will
4x Thoughtseize
1x Duress
3x Lotus Petal
4x Mosswort Bridge
1x Island
1x Swamp
1x Verdant Catacombs
2x Misty Rainforest
4x Polluted Delta
3x Tropical Island
4x Underground Sea

3x Krosan Grip
2x Form of the Dragon
2x Pithing Needle
4x Tarmogoyf
2x Blue Elemental Blast
2x Relic of Progenitus

I didn't take any notes, so the following report is just an outline of the matches. English isn't my first language either, so I'll start out by apologizing for any linguistic inconveniences.

Round One: Jeppe (DK) with Rb Goblins

Game One: He wins the die roll and starts off with a Goblin Lackey. I Force it. On my turn I Thoughtseize him and pick a W. Wierding. I don't remember what happens from here on, except that I SnT Emrakul into play and Stifle his next turn Stingscourger.

Sideboarding: - 1 Duress, - 4 Thoughtseize, + 2 Form of the Dragon, + 2 BEB, + 1 Tarmogoyf

Game Two: Once again he starts off with Lackey. I put down down a fetch (with BEB in hand). On his turn I BEB the Lackey, but he puts down a second one. On my turn I play my second land and pass with LDV and SnT in hand. He attacks and put a SGC into play. Fortunately for me, he only have two lands in play, so I EOT LDV for FoTD. He concedes after I kill his SCG.

1-0
2-0

Round Two: Martin D. (DK) with Urgw CounterTop Painter

Game One: I win the die roll and Thoughtseize him on turn one. I see something like FoW, Daze, CB, a couple of lands and something that isn't blue. I pick the FoW. He puts down a fetch. I put down my second land and pass with SnT, Emrakul and Stifle in hand. He puts down a second land and crack the fetch. I Stifle, he floats a blue mana and Dazes. Then puts down CB. On my turn I put down my third land and SnT into Emrakul. CB flips blank and I win.

Sideboarding: - 3 Lotus Petal, + 2 Krosan Grip, + 1 Pithing Needle

Game Two: He get his combo down, but is kinda surprised, when he realizes that it doesn't work against decks with Emrakul. I, however can't draw anything, my tutors gets countered, Servant beats for 7 and a Tarmogoyf kills me.

Game Three: I don't remember the details, but he gets a second turn Tarmogoyf. I use Brainstorm to put Emrakul under the bridge. On his third turn, he plays Trinket Mage, finds SDT and pass. I have the nought in hand and top decks a Thoughtseize. I put down my fourth land, seize him seeing both Krosan Grip, Daze and Force. He is tapped out and has no other blue cards in hand, so I pick the Daze and Bridge the Emrakul into play, GG.

2-0
4-1

Round Three: Niels Christian (DK) with UGWr Supreme Blue

Game One: I win the roll and have both M. Bridge, Brainstorm, LDV and Emrakul in hand. I start off by Brainstorming my Emrakul back on top of my library. He puts down SDT. I put the Emrakul under the bridge. He looks at the top and put down a land. I put down my third land, have drawn FoW and pass the turn. He tries to play Counterbalance. In response I play LDV and puts something like Dreadnought, Show and Tell, Emrakul on top. I Force the Counterbalance, to which he does nothing and pass the turn. I guess he doesn't have any counters, so I go for it. Put down Dreadnought, he says okay and Emrakul it is. He scoops.

Sideboarding: - 3 Lotus Petal, + 2 Krosan Grip, + 1 Pithing Needle

Game Two: He plays land, go. I start exactly as in game one (BS + Bridge + Emrakul). He EOT BS and plays a Tarmogoyf. I think I play my second land and pass. He plays his second Tarmogoyf, third land and beats. I have double SnT in hand but no dude or protection. I play the SnT and he REB it. Some turns later, a resolved EOT LDV finds me double Nought. The first resolves and Emrakul makes him scoop.

3-0
6-1

Round Four: Steffen (DE) with Ubgr Landstill

I get mana screwed in both games and mulligan to five in game two. I remember at some point being able to cast and stifle a Dreadnought with the help of Lotus Petal. He gets to Ghastly Demise it. Good times.

3-1
6-3

At this point my tie breakers are really good, so I can ID into top 8, however, my opponent has seven points, so if he wins, he has a chance to make it. I hadn't eaten all day, so I was looking forward to some food. On the other hand, he's a really nice guy and I didn't want to ague over it, so the battle for top 8 is on:

Round Five: Christoph (DE) with New Horizons

Game One: I don't remember the first couple of turns, except that he Stifles and wastes my land. He also had an okay clock because of a turn two Tarmogoyf. The turn before he can kill me with Goyf and a large Knight (which he used to cycle H. Canopies with). I ponder into Emrakul with three lands in play; SnT, Stifle and double Petal in hand. I play both petals and my opponent begins to count my storm, which explains his funny look on his face, when I played the SnT. It resolves and I pass. He just passes back. I swing, and in response to annihilator, he taps Knight. In fear of Karakas I Stifle the Knight and he scoops.

Sideboarding: - 1 Ponder, + 1 Form of the Dragon

Game Two: He doesn't know my deck, so I keep a hand with Stifle/Nought. He puts down a Goyf on turn two. On my second turn a draw a Thoughtseize and use it to clear a counter. He puts down a second Goyf and beats. I draw a Nought and Stifle the first one into play. I win by attacking with the Nought and play a new one “to untap” it two turns in a row (yup, I drew three Noughts).

4-1
7-3

This doesn't look good. My only loss in the swiss was to Ubg Landstill. Simon is my team mate, which makes it even worse. Out testing showed a really bad match up for me, but there's nothing to do about it...

Top 8 (Quarter finals): Simon (DK) with Ubg Landstill

Game One: I get a fast Nought with Force backup. He has Innocent Blood + Force and afterward get to kill my lands. However, he doesn't have a clock, so several turns, with both of us only drawing lands, I get to SnT into Emrakul with Force backup. He get to keep one Underground sea. On his turn he tries to Innocent Blood, but I hard cast FoW at one life.

Sideboarding: - 1 Ponder, - 1 Duress, + 1 Form of the Dragon, + 1 Pithing Needle

Game Two: Loam + Waste + Counter + Jace

Game Three: Even though it's a shitty plan I once again start of with a fast Nought; this time with double Force backup. On his turn, he cast Innocent Blood again, and he too has double Force backup. Frowns! That counter battle however sent us both into top deck mode. I get to drop a Bridge and put a Emrakul below it with Nought in hand, but I don't have green mana available. He drops a Deed the turn before I draw a Petal and it's draw-go again. He only adds insult to injury be dropping a second Deed. Luckely for me, I draw a second Nought and ponder into a Stifle. I play the first Nought; he deeds and I pass. Next turn I do the same again, this time however, I Stifle the Deed and Emrakul makes him scoop.

5-1
9-4

Top 8 (Semi finals): Morten (DK) with Opal Affinity

Game One: He wins the die roll and we both mulligan to six. He starts with land, Ornithopter. I Ponder. He puts something down. I play land and say go with LDV and SnT in hand. I guess he puts down a creature or two. I LDV on his end step, find Emrakul. I play SnT on my turn, puts down Emrakul and he scoops.

Sideboarding: - 1 Ponder, -4 Thoughtseize, + 3 Krosan Grip, +2 Pithing Needle

Game Two: He start of by putting down Land, Pithing Needle (Bridge), Memnite, Memnite. I have LDV in hand and Ponder finds me SnT. He tries to play Ravager, but I Force it, he beats. I don't do anything on my turn. He plays Enforcer and beats. EOT I repeat game 1 and he scoops.

6-1
11-4

Top 8 (Finals): Martin P. (DK) with Merfolks

Game One: I mulligan to five (Land, land, Emrakul, Dreadnought, Ponder). He begins with Vial, go. By turn four I get to SnT into Emrakul. He has LoA, Curse Catcher and Reejerey in play and I'm at 14. He beats me down to 8 and drops two or three permanents, so that he has six beyond the three creatures. I swing and annihilate all but the creatures and drops the Dreadnought sacrificing Emrakul. He scoops.

Sideboarding: - 1 Duress, - 4 Thoughtseize, + 4 Tarmogoyf, + 1 Form of The Dragon

Game Two: He start of with a vial again. I play a Tarmogoyf on turn two, which definitely made him stare a bit. I don't remember the rest except that I Bridge an Emrakul into play on turn four with Force backup at 15.

7-1
13-4

I had a really fun time and played against some friendly opponents. Thank you for reading. I hope that you found me report maybe just slightly interesting.

Congrats on your result! It's nice to see legacy taking of literally everywhere.

I didn't quite understand this point. Couldn't you just have dropped the nought and answered to the trigger with the bridge? He shouldn't have a window to get priority ad activate deed in between... Am I missing something? Or maybe I'm just completely wrong with the ruling... :P

If you look at Mosswort Bridge ability, the check is on resolution. So, you activate it when you want, but if there isn't a 10+ power creatures when it resolves, the ability is countered.

You put the ability in the pile, and he can deed in response.

Anyway, you can try it, because if the opponent think like Cthuloo, he doesn't activate Deed and the Emrakul comes into play, and you don't lose the Exiled card if the ability is countered xD

Thanks for the answer, I always missed this detail of the combo (which is something useful to know for me, since my pet deck is Bg smallpox with pernicious deeds, and my meta has his decent share of Aeon Bridge variants).

Just to clear things out. When the first Nought resolved, I received priority and responded to the trigger by activating the Bridge. He then responded by sacrificing Deed (at one) and the Bridge trigger was countered by game rules.

You can't wait to see, how the opponent responds. If you don't respond first, the Nought will just die to it's own trigger :D

You don't understand me.
Play Nought, in response activate Bridge. If your opponent doesn't activate Deed you get a Emrakul. If he does, you tap 2 lands for nothing, but can try again with another Nought.

...and that is what I did in the actual situation. I just thought, that you where suggesting, that one can wait to see how the opponent responds

Nice report, I appreciate the detail and the SB plans. Also, if you had an idea, could you list the counter suits that your opponents were playing? And how hard is it to beat a "standard" landstill counter suit, ie:

4 Force of Will
4 Counterspell
3 Spell Snare
2 Spell Pierce

Your thoughts are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm am the organizor behind the tournament, so I have all the decklists (which were handed to me face-down on registration, so I had no advantage).

URgw CounterTop Painter:
3x Daze
4x Counterbalance
4x Force of Will
SB:
2 Spell Pierce
2 Pyroblast
3 Red Elemental Blast

UGWr Supreme Blue
4x Force of Will
2x Spell Snare
2x Counterspell
4x Counterbalance
SB:
2 Spell Pierce
1 Pyroblast
1 Red Elemental Blast

UBgr Landstill
4x Force of Will
4x Counterspell
3x Spell Pierce
SB:
1x Spell Pierce

New Horizons
4x Force of Will
4x Daze
4x Stifle
SB:
3x Spell Pierce

UBg Landstill
4x Counterspell
4x Force of Will
3x Spell Pierce
3x Spell Snare

Merfolks
4x Force of Will
4x Daze
2x Spell Pierce
4x Curse Catcher
SB:
2x Divert

The UBg Landstill deck is really a tough match-up. So far I'm 3-10 in testing. The counter suite, combined with Innocent Blood, Waste+Loam and Deed+Jace (in the late game), is usually too much to handle. Usualy against control-decks I board out the Lotus Petals, to gain more power over speed, but that isn't even possible in this matchup.

Thanks. Congrats on your finish! Good job battling what I see as tough counter-suits. IMO anything that starts with 4 force, 4 counterspell is tough. Cheers.

Hello guys,

first congratulation to NesretepNoj! Second, I want to ask you, do you feel that this deck is better/stronger than Shelldrazi/Rev614 ? Both plan to SnT or Hideaway Emrakul into game, but do it in different style.

So far I've tried Christopher Gosselin's GP Columbus top-8 deck, Aeon Bridge and Doomsday Fetchland Tendrils (+ 1 Emrakul & 1 S. Isle), with the latter not using Show and Tell.

I don't have any tournament experience with either of the Doomsday-based decks. In the hands of a skilled (and trained) pilot, I would say that DDFT is the best. But as with so many other decks, it is also a meta call. I your meta is full of Counterbalance-decks, I prefer Aeon Bridge.

I like the versatility of how to use Stifle and Dreadnoughts. Stifle can be used to counter wastelands, keeping CB of the table for an important extra turn. Stifling Karakas, Maze of Ith, Knight of the Req., is also good, and of course stifling the nought. Three days before this tournament I went 4-0 with deck, beating Mono Red Burn be racing them with a turn two Dreadnought. Aeon Bridge also makes best use of Lim-Dûl's Vault, which I think is a greath strenght.

I think that Gosselin's deck is too vulnerable to Wasteland, Pithing Needle and Stifle. Casting Doomsday and then passing the turn is also quite dangerous against fast decks like Zoo and Goblins.
