View Full Version : Not really enjoying Legacy...

So I played Dredge for 3 years in extended, and then Wizards broke my favorite format. So I tried Dredge for a bit here. It's not quite as good, not to mention that I'm sick of the deck after that long. After fiddling around with a fair share of established Legacy decks, I really haven't found any that stuck to me. Eva Green is outdated, replaced by Team America more or less. Survival variants are prohibitively expensive by containing Loyal Retainers. Any of the few decks that play my favorite card in magic (Vedalken Shackles) also play Counterbalance, a card I never want to see on my side of the table ever again. I'm not sure what I want in a deck, other than for it to be enjoyable, at least somewhat competitive, and not be too far out of my reach from a financial standpoint either.

And no Counterbalance. Anyone?

Well what do you like to play for fun? Like when you're just hanging out. I'm sure you have a competitive local scene, but lots of guys tear it up at mine with homebrew rogue stuff, it's fantastic. Your question, as is, is incredibly vague.

Well, there are many ways to start out. What color/s do you like? Budget considerations? Staples that you might already own?

There are so many decks available, both competitive and somewhat. Narrowing it down will take time.

@Broham - My only "casual" deck is a hillarious sliver combo deck. I don't play EDH or anything similar.

@kicks - Blue, Green, and Black. Budget only matters when its a single 100+ card that I can't play in any other deck, be it Loyal Retainers or Imperial Recruiter or anything of the like. I don't like Counterbalance and Standstill. I own Goyfs, fetches, Shackles, Chrome Moxen, Survivals, Wastelands, Jittes, Ravagers, Tombstalkers, Sinkholes, Cunning Wishes (is that even a staple anymore?), Confidants, Vials, the entirety of Dredge, Magus of the Moons, Cabal Therapies, and other odds and ends. Not a single dual/force of will/vengevine/jace/stifle/standstill/mutavault/natural order...

Ub Merfolk?
Also, maybe you should try out Faerie Stompy or Dragon Stompy or any of their variants.

Try out Next Level Thresh (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?18865-%5BDeck%5D-Next-Level-Threshold). The deck's quite good and you could even play Vedalken Shackles in there. You'd have to buy a few duals and stuff but I think it's worth it. What I like about the deck is that it's versatile and there's a few flex-slots and a lot of cards work quite well in the deck.
You could also play UBG Tempo Threshold, this is the deck I'd rather play. It's alot like Team America, only better. Oh and by the way, Eva Green is not outdatet, it's still viable. My teammate played it at a local event on Sunday.

Play combo.

Enchantress is a blast to play. Against agro, it's a race to put up your highly formidable defenses quickly enough. Against control, you have more raw card advantage than 90% of decks in the format. Against combo, you lose! If you play the deck without Moat, it's still good and about $150 cheaper. It runs minimal dual lands. It turned me on to legacy.

EDIT: also, your question is vague. So I basically am just recommending a deck I find particularly fun, and that has a feel all its own.

Maybe Landstill? You can play it Blue/Green/Black (or even splash white for 4c) or White/Blue with a splash (black or maybe red).

Switch to Vintage.

The interactions of this format are dull.

There's always Mono Blue Control, as outdated as that may be. It has none of the gimicky stuff that Counterbalance variants have like Brainstorm and Counterbalance. Plus, it's probably the strongest deck to run Vedalken Shackles in.

It's not bad either. I still randomly tear up my local Legacy scene with it.

Survival is too wide of a card to close doors to yourself. There's life beyond Loyal Retainers.

This.

You can play Vengivine Survival, Elf Survival, ATS, WelderSurvival

You have options by the shitload.

That said, you can alway save your money for Loyal Retainers.

I also like and play Dredge but not all the time. Have 2-3 different decks that suites different metas.

Serious reply: I also second the idea of survival. There's just much more to the card than Retainers or Vengevine. Try for example the list called MOST on this page (http://www.eternal-central.com/?p=863), it's a blast.

Survival advantage for the fucking win. No iona. Probably the most exciting and fun deck to play ever, while still being rather competitive. (i mean, it runs flametongue kavu. Who would'nt have fun playing flametongue kavu?)
I also love Merfolk, Dredge and UBGW landstill.... the first is pretty cheap (320-350$)...the last one is not but it is a blast to play.

Edit: Merfolk is pretty cheap in its MonoU version, of course.

I've been playing dredge for so long, but I am still playing it.

The only thing that comes to mind, when you mention Vedalken Shackles, is mono blue control. If you like control style you can try Mono White Control, or Quinn I believe is what other call it. There's also enchantress that's pretty cheap, and then there's Landstill. If you like disruptive decks, some things you can check out too are some variants of rock, mono black control is pretty cheap too, and there's also the pox archetype.

Play combo.

This.

Bored of Dredge, your normal sex toy?

Play Doomsday Fetchland Tendrils, the only Legacy deck that lets you masturbate in 12 different ways.

No experience is the same.
