View Full Version : Legacy All-Commons (not pauper) Affinity

I'm a long time Legacy player, but I want some more casual decks to play with newer players. My only rules are (1) Legacy legal, (2) all commons, (3) reasonably inexpensive (no Sinkholes). I know it's an arbitrary set of rules, but if you're willing to play along, keep reading!

I'd like to explore some aggro and aggro-control affinity strategies first. Here's a deck (http://puremtgo.com/articles/pauper-premier-event-analysis-june-27-2010) by Doctor Anime that uses mana fixers instead of 0-drop creatures, and gives 8 cards to refill the hand:

Creatures
4 Myr Enforcer
4 Frogmite
4 Somber Hoverguard
3 Quicksilver Behemoth
3 Krark-Clan Shaman
4 Disciple of the Vault

Other Spells
4 Thoughtcast
4 Rush of Knowledge

Mana Fixers
3 Lotus Petal
3 Springleaf Drum
4 Chromatic Sphere
4 Chromatic Star

Lands
4 Ancient Den
4 Great Furnace
4 Seat of the Synod
4 Vault of Whispers

Problems include an over-reliance on blue mana.

To add Plating, I'd probably take -1 Rush of Knowledge and -3 QuickSilver Behemoth. Behemoth doesn't have evasion, which would be useful for connecting with Plating, and the bouncing could be a pain, especially due to the need for Blue mana.

Then I'd probably add in Ornithopters in place of -4 Chromatic Sphere. Due to the decreased need for blue mana, we don't need as many mana fixers, and Ornithopters will more quickly build Affinity. Also, Ornithopters give evasion for Plating.

Some other ideas I'm interested in trying are Glaze Fiend and Glare Hawk. While the Hawk isn't an Artifact, it's reasonably well-priced, and can bounce 0-drops for the Fiend's "artifact-fall" pump effect.

This leads me to a more control-oriented build. Tidehollow Strix with Viridian Longbow (served up by Trinket Mage) is a neat combo to take care of whatever Krark-Clan Shaman can't handle. Trinket Mage opens up the door to Dispeller's and Executioner's Capsules, Welding Jars, and Spellbombs. Sanctum Gargoyle can recur these effects, while other "coming into play" effects can themselves be recurred with Momentary Blink and Glare Hawk. Unfortunately, right now it's just a jumble of ideas, but an artifact-oriented aggro-control deck would be neat. =)

Any ideas on how to make the above list more deadly when using all available commons in Legacy? Any ideas for a more controlling artifact build? Thanks!
