So, way before Legacy can be played on MTGO, online players used to play Classic as their eternal format.

The question is how was the two format different from each other metawise? I know cards such as Skullclamp, Oath of Druids and Land Tax were legal on the format but what decks were actually considered tier1?

Everything changed with Exodus.

Everything will change with MED4.

Summer 2009 - Earthcraft/Clamp Elves, Zoo, and Merfolk were the top 3 decks.
Winter 2010 - Oath hit the scene, and now it's vintage lite.

Storm combo decks can play Yagwmoth Will, and this make the deck faster and hate-resilient. You need Graveyard Hate + Standard hate to beat them.
Dredge can play with Bazaar, etc...
