View Full Version : New Banner!
With the recent banning of my and a lot of others most beloved card, Survival of the Fittest, I figured it would be cool to choose a new card to go into The Source banner. Obviously it needs to be a popular card in the format, one that has "Legacy" written all over it.
FYI, I can't do shit about making the banner. I'm just making the poll.

FU Jace. GTFO, Top rules. Also at this rate, if Jace is so damn great, they should put him on the chopping block next so we'll be having this thread all over again. Top is and will be more iconic than Jace the Mindrapist.

+1.
Cephalid Coliseum wouldn't be bad, either, but I don't know if it's iconic enough to be worth the space.

Top or Lion's eye would be amusing since they are probably at the top of the list for being banned eventually.

Wild Nacatl because it defines aggro.

Lightning Bolt: Defines red decks much better than any other cards and red is underrepresented in the banner
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn: Kidding, right?
Sensei's Divining Top: Counterbalance is already there so it is redundant.
Life fromt the Loam: Solid choice
Lord of Atlantis: Solid choice
Ad Nauseum: Tendrils and dark ritual pretty much tell the story.
Pernicious Deed: Huge chunks of Legacy history happened without it and it is not even populat today.
Wild Nacatl: It sees play in only one deck. Bolt and Goyf are better symbols.
Jace, the Mind Sculptor: He defines standard but in Legacy he is powerful but far from everywhere.

Keep the legend alive, keep the banner unchanged.

The banner is pretty easy to change, FWIW. It's in a layered Photoshop file.
There's already a couple of combo cards in the banner, so I'd say Life from the Loam would be the correct choice.

Clarification: if you don't want to add more combo cards, I'd remove Dark Ritual which is played strictly only in Tendrils decks, and add Lion's Eye Diamond, which is also belongs to Belcher and some versions of Ichorid, and that embodies the brokenness of Combo decks in general. The format's best acceleration.
Ritual belongs more to Vintage where it's the clear representation of TPS.
Also, Loam is played by some tiers 2 nowadays. It doesn't deserve a spot. Ad Nauseam is just for TES and ANT, too specific.
Jace and Top are strong contenders. Top particularly, it's a prerogative of Legacy as of now and by far one of the most broken staples.
Jace is everywhere instead, despites being a blast.

Lord of Atlantis or Jace.
Top, Brainstorm, Force, and Counterbalance are basically always in the same decks, so Top doesn't bring much to the party.
Wild Nacatl or Bolt would represent Zoo, I guess. Does anyone still seriously play that deck, though?
Loam decks are bad, and Deed hasn't really been playable in ages. Emrakul is basically one deck that's not very good, and Ad Noz is basically only in Tendrils (which is conveniently already on the banner).
Lord of Atlantis represents a major deck in Legacy. Jace is basically an auto-include for any serious control deck, except for the people stuck in five years ago who think that Standstill is still a good draw engine. That said, control as a deck type is terrible in Legacy, so maybe Lord is better.

Wild Nacatl or Atlantis, more towards Atlantis, since there's nothing currently representing Merfolk exclusively in the banner.

LoA. I would'nt put Jace because blue based control is well depicted by Counterbalance, Brainstorm and Fow. Also Lackey is there, so I can't see any reason why LoA should not.

Wild Nacatl or LoA, by far. While strong, Jace doesn't feel special to Legacy.

I say Lightning Bolt - what in Legacy is more iconic than the timeless bolt?

a good test for whether a card is iconic within a format - or format defining - would be
when you think of x what format do you think of?
asking that question of bolt, i doubt legacy would be an overwhelming response - similarly if jace was x
top or LoA both would fall into this category however
i go for LoA because merfolk has been strong for a long period of time and he is a defining card in this build

Qasali Pridemage or Ichorid, because when I randomly hear someone speaking about a deck he/she always names one of/both those cards. Qasali Pridemage is definitely the creature I'd like to see in the banner because I think it's format defining, even though I'm playing Dredge atm.
Island (or Jace) has my vote. Haha =)

I would say NO to any Standard-legal card. Yes, I mean you, Jace.
MY vote goes to Loam just because it's different and represents someinteresting decks. Other than that - LED.

Yeah, it's the Alpha-4th edition pic.
Also, as a longtime Sui/Eva/Pox player, those be fightin' words. Although I guess I could handle Dark Ritual being gone if Duress or Thoughtseize replaced it.

Ichorid.
The visible cards (not behind the name in the banner) represent combo, control (countertop), aggro, and the everpresent brainstorm.
The missing piece is the guy everyone loves to hate and hopes never shows up.

Most of the archetypes are represented except for non-blue control decks (such as Rock and Staxx).
Why not have Mox Diamond? Yes those decks are not dominant but every meta would always have that non-blue control deck right?

I voted Lightning Bolt in the poll, but after seeing someone say Dark Confidant feel that that's the right vote and here's why:
GP Philly 2005 - Chris Pikula plays Deadguy Ale to 2nd place.
GP Columbus 2007 - Steve Sadin plays Flash, featuring Dark Confidant, to 1st place. (Michael Belfatto's & Max Tietze's T8 lists also have it, and arguably Bill Stark's should have had it).
GP Chicago 2009 - Gabriel Nassif plays CounterTop to 1st place (Brian Kowal's & Paul Rietzl's T8 lists also have it).
GP Madrid 2010 - Saito and David Do Anh both play Confidant in the sideboard of Ad Nauseum decks to T8 finishes.
GP Columbus 2010 - Brad Nelson squeaks into T8 with a Rock deck playing Dark Confidant.
So of all the Legacy GPs played, Dark Confidant has only missed T8 at GP Lille, and he's done it in Black aggro/disruption decks, Combo decks, and CounterTop control decks.
EDIT:
For reference, the cards in the banner (at the moment), from left to right: Lackey, Rit, Survival, Vial, Waste, FoW, StP, Tendrils, Goyf, BStorm, CBalance.
Which covers, all colors, artifacts & lands. Instants, Creatures, Artifacts, Lands, Sorceries & Enchantments. Removal, Draw, Mana Disruption, Counterspells, beatdown, Tutoring (Survival, possibly another tutor would be good), Lock control (CBalance), Acceleration, and everyone favorite combo kill.
Doesn't cover multicolor cards. Tribal and Planeswalkers aren't covered either. I don't think we need to put Jace or Warren Weirding or Deed/Vindicate on their just to try and incorporate card types or multicolored cards. If they aren't heavily played in the format then they aren't representative of the format. I think Jace is a really good card, but in comparison to Dark Confidant's track record in the format, DC is overdue to be on the banner.

But who plays those decks? Control is terrible in Legacy, and control without blue seems even worse.

We don't need any more storm combo cards. My vote is "Other" for Ichorid.

Control is terrible in Legacy
I have to disagree with you. Control continues to consistently top 8 in many large scale tournaments (take, for example, Countertop and UBG Landstill in GP: Columbus) and while it wasn't DA BEST strategy during survival's predominance, it was still viable. Now that survival is gone, control will likely make a comeback. While, non-blue control is usually less powered than blue control, I believe that in the expected meta (zoo, goblins, merfolk, counterbalance, TES as the most played decks), a non-blue control deck such as Quinn could be very well positioned (granted, the match up against countertop isn't very good, but the deck absoloutely crushes goblins, and has a positive match up vs. Zoo and Merfolk).
It's kind of funny that most of the people that have posted in the thread oppose jace being in the banner, but he is winning in the poll by a prety wide margin.

LoA
Probably the most important deck in the format coming up is going to be Merfolk.
Jace doesn't say Legacy AT ALL. Need I remind everyone here that he probably sees less play in Legacy then any other format including Vintage.
Life from the Loam, Lightning Bolt or Lord of Atlantis would be my favorite calls.

I voted "other",but I prefer Lightning Bolt.
The banner currently boasts the following quantities: 2 blue, 2 black, 1 (2) green, 1 red, 1 white, 1 land and 1 artifact.
A 3rd blue card doesnt make much sense now.
It has to be either white or red, so I vote for BOLT, which is found in at least 4 important archetypes.
