View Full Version : Exchanging 7th for 8th Wrath of God in a tournament?

During a tournament, are players allowed to substitute a card (e.g. 7th Wrath) for a different edition version (e.g. 8th WoG)? If so, when? Only while sideboarding / in between rounds? Not at all? What's the proper ruling on this one?
There is no official policy or rules on this, and so it's the head judge's decision to allow or disallow that. In a recent MTGRULES-L post, Scott Marshall (DCIJUDGE-L NetRep) said, that he would allow it between rounds, but there won't be an official ruling.

You are not allowed to have any cards in/near your deckbox besides the deck *which is registered*, the 15card sideboard, token cards. Any other non-relevant cards are not allowed, neither are tradebinders and such.
Between matches (not games), you are allowed to change the card with another version of the same card , like another set, foil, asian or what-not. As long as when you present your deck, the deck is exactly the same as on the decklist you had to pass on to the judges at the start of the tournament.
Then again, when in doubt, ask a judge at the tournament site

Are you allowed to have cards in/near your deckbox that aren't legal in the format you're playing? For example, could I "legally" have an unhinged/unglued card
(or perhaps even a legacy card for a standard deck) in a different sleeve to separate my deck from my sideboard?

This is a head judge's decision.
But I can't see any reason, whe he would disallow an unhinged card in your deckbox. I even allow the players at prerelease tournaments to keep the prerelease-promo in their deckbox, even though they are not allowed to play the card.
But when in doubt, ask the headjudge bfore the tournament starts.

It's not advisable

I'm asking because it actually makes a difference in the face or City in a Bottle. It's main purpose is obv fighting Bazaar in Vintage but it causes Splash Damage against City of Brass / Arabian Nights Mountain.

It might be helpful to say so in the first place.
Switching card versions is not covered by the rules, so as luma said it's entirely head judge discretion. Typically, you will only be allowed to switch between matches.
