Hi all, i'd like to post this one here :smile: I'm not new to magic, have been playing since Onslaught block, occasionaly playing Legacy when the opportunity arises...only one local shop and broken legacy community :frown:

Anyway would like to make this deck better in the budget form but also you could make it go all the way to a high profile one :smile:.. Not all the cards are available to me and if you can playtest it more post your results here :smile:

// Lands
6 [10E] Swamp
6 [10E] Forest
4 [RAV] Overgrown Tomb
2 [EVE] Twilight Mire
2 [10E] Treetop Village
1 [SH] Volrath's Stronghold
1 [CHK] Okina, Temple to the Grandfathers

// Creatures
4 [CHK] Sakura-Tribe Elder
4 [ZEN] Vampire Nighthawk
3 [FD] Eternal Witness
2 [AP] Spiritmonger
2 [CHK] Kodama of the North Tree
2 [CHK] Kokusho, the Evening Star

// Spells
4 [AP] Pernicious Deed
4 [RAV] Putrefy
4 [FE] Hymn to Tourach
3 [PLC] Damnation
3 [TE] Diabolic Edict
2 [ON] Smother
1 [LRW] Profane Command

// Sideboard
SB: 4 [SOM] Nihil Spellbomb
SB: 4 [JU] Cabal Therapy
SB: 4 [M10] Duress
SB: 3 [8E] Choke

Ok on to a card explanation..mana base needs a little work :smile: but do keep in mind that you need a lots of lands for consistency :smile:

Creatures:

Sakura-Tribe Elder - Land accelerant, blocker, deck thiner etc..
Vampire Nighthawk - Evasive creature with good abilities, can act as additional removal
Eternal Witness - Utility card

Spiritmonger, Kodama of the North Tree, Kokusho, the Evening Star are of finisher type, when there isn't anything left on the opponents side/hand :smile:

Spells:

Pernicious Deed - For destroying enchantments, artifacts, creatures
Damnation - Additional support
Putrefy - Effectively this could be Maelstrom Pulse and plan to get 4-of but it is still good, cause of its instant speed
Diabolic Edict - For those 3rd turn Progenitus decks
Smother - Additional support
Hymn To Tourach - Hand disruption, never gets old
Profane Command - Another form of finisher, has good sinergy with Eternal Witness

On to sideboard:

Nihil Spellbomb - Against graveyard based decks
Cabal Therapy - Additional hand disruption support, against more control oriented decks
Duress - This is a local metagame choice. Basically if there are a lot of control decks then i would replace 3 Damnations + 1 Diabolic Edict for 4 of them, and vice versa
Choke - Against blue based decks, for slowing them down, biting counterspells

Anyway feel free to comment :smile:..i'll post somewhat poor number of matchups later

Where are deranged hermit and phyrexian plaguelord?

Maybe instead of Edict run Shriekmaw. If you ran Recurring Nightmare I think Deranged Hermit would be pretty badass.
Especially if you get Kokusho out ^.~

I'd run the Troll instead of the Spirit Monger though, lower mana cost and does the same thing for you.

@Waikiki
Don't know how good are they right now but i can try testing them..as Mystical proposed Recurring nightmare would be tech with hermit but i don't own them at the moment...i'm not a big fan of troll without an equipment but in a faster environment he could be of use :)

You really, really should invest in a playset of Tarmogoyf. They make every green deck better, and if you intend to play in eternal tournaments they're a must have for every collection. You can always sell them again later on.

Come on... When do people stop suggesting things like that... sigh...
That isn't true and you should know it. UG Madness, Elves, Lands, Eternal Garden, Wuascht Survival, Loam Control, Train Wreck - to name a few - are all green and don't play him.

You can easily play Control without them. I wouldn't play Goyf together with Deed and Damnation.

It isn't easy to hear, especially since you obviously want to play your favorite traditional "Rock" creatures, but people suggest it because it is true.

Tarmogoyf would replace Spiritmonger, Kokusho, and North Tree very easily. I'd argue it merits a spot before all the other creatures, but that isn't easy to swallow. You should at least be able to see why Tarmogoyf is a better card than several cards you've chosen. It does deserve to be played in your deck if you are trying to maximize your chances to win in competitive Legacy.

If you can offer a reason why going Goyf-less fits your particular metagame (which perhaps is different from what others might experience), that would be a good reason -- I can't seem to think of a case just yet.

If it is a thing of budget, nostalgia, or just plain playstyle preference, then just say it (I can totally understand that). I can understand why 'winning at all costs' isn't the priority. If that is the case, you need to be upfront about it.

You can, but you very often shouldn't. Tarmogoyf improves a ton of control decks, including this one. Goyf stops the bleeding very quickly; he's a great win con; he's cheap and therefore also easy to recur (which seems to matter in this deck).

Nighthawk and Witness don't play nice with sweepers either, but that wouldn't necessarily stop me from playing them. Note that you do have Stronghold, Witness, and Command for recursion if needed. Seems quite reasonable to me.

--------------

In addition to Goyf, I think you should consider 2 Tombstalker.

I also suggest Maelstrom Pulse in place of the Putrefy's. Dropping non-regen and moving from instant to sorcery is worth picking up the cross being Vindicate and Echoing Truth. Enchantments and Planeswalkers are pretty common, and Deed and discard simply won't handle everything.

Goyf costs two mana, and half the time he's bigger than the Kodama at five. It could very well be that he's decided not to spend more than a few euro/dollar on a card, and that would be a respectable choice, but there's a reason that Goyf is up there with Jace. It will make most non-tribal decks with green flat out better. Even if you decide not to get your playset, you should be aware of this.

I understand your pain scooter :)..essentially my only problem with Goyf is it's price, and i mean it's overpriced value. Now don't get me wrong he is an excellent creature at 2cmc but it's just that. He sits there with no evasion, no protection, gets chump blocked all day long..eats all sorts of removal. If they given him shroud and trample then i would recognize his priced value :)
Spiritmonger is there, i admit it, cause of nostalgic reasons :)...i do plan on getting Maelstrom Pulses eventually, and maybe try with 2 Abyssal Persecutor but only when their price drops around 10 bucks
