I have been fascinated with Metalworker and his uses since even before the unbanning a year or two ago, and I haven't seen many spectacular uses of the little guy. So here is my attempt to build a prison deck that uses and abuses colorless mana and the best artifacts available.

2 Gods' Eye, Gate to the Rekai

4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
3 Rishadan Port
4 Wasteland
3 Mishra's Factory


The plan: Destroy their board and manabase, and prevent any hope of recovery with sphere/lodestone/port. Pull out Metalworker/staff combo, draw into banefire and hit them for 99999. Or Beat down with worker/lodestone/factory.

Cards I am considering: Enlightened Tutor or Ancient Stirrings. Both castable with Mox Diamonds, and both can fetch the threats I need, but have slightly differenty functionality. Tutor Can grab an artifact but generates negative CA, but stirrings can grab any of the top 5 of my library, including lands, and I get it the same turn.

Didn't you post essentially the same deck (http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/showthread.php?18597-%5BDeck%5D-Metal-Stax&highlight=stax) 4 months ago? What's better about this version?

Also you shouldn't take this list to a tournament, you've only got 50 cards.

Also 18 lands are not enough to fully support 4 Diamonds. I'd go +1 chalice, +1 Tangle wire, +1 Smokestack, +3 Mishra's Factory, +2 Ghost Quarter, +1 Rishadan Port, +1 Crystal Vein.

Ive always liked this type of deck (even more since I play MUD in vintage), but the problem with this deck is often the fact that without mishra's workshop an the moxen/lotus/sol ring/mana vault/mana crypt you just can't be explosive enough...

you can only drop metalworket turn 1 if you have a mox, 1 land to ditch (you play only 18, so good luck with that) and a 2 mana land....

So I sugest that (like discussed in the vintage forum's) you try out serum powder to mulligan more agressively into a good starting hand.

Here's a good list to start with I think:

4x Ancient Tomb
4x City of Traitors
4x Crystal Vein (we don't have shop, so this wil have to do)
4x Mishra’s Factory
4x Rishadan Port (this could be ghost quarter, or blinkmoth nexus/mutavault if you like)
4x Wasteland
24 land

4x Mox Diamond
4x chalice of the void
4x sphere of resitance
4x Tangle wire
4x Smokestack
4x crucible of worlds
24x disruption

4x lodestone golem

4x serum powder

4x Open slots

maybe a land or 2 extra (24 lands works OK with mox diamond, but maybe 25-26 are required because crystal vein tends to blow itself up), and for the other 2/3 slots maybe ratchet bomb would be nice here...

As you see I don't play metalworker (yes, not even in vintage), because it's only good turn 1 (rarely happens) and in this case you'd rather have some disruption instead of him.

I do think he's a great sideboard card against controll decks though...

I'm not sure I need ratchet bomb. Chalice and smokestacks essentially do the same thing while offering permanente sacability. I added 2 Gods' Eye, as they are beautiful sacable lands.

And LoL, i just realized I had 50 cards

It's because it's Mud (brown/colorless) and it gets people stuck in a muddy hole :P
