View Full Version : UGr Heartbeat in Time
Hi folks. I'm happy I've found this forum. I play Magic the Gathering for some years and I wasn't even aware of it!
So here we go. I'm posting a funny deck and would like some tips and suggestions improving it, maybe specially about a faster ramp, defenses against aggro and weenies and the sideboard. As you can see, the side has only some other cards that could be in the main deck, but it has no general defense against the Legacy format most used things.
I think you'll be able to figure out what the deal is when you see the cards combined.
//NAME: Heartbeating in Time
// Lands
8 Forest
6 Island
2 Mountain
2 Wooded Foothills
3 Misty Rainforest
// Creatures
4 Eternal Witness
4 Wood Elves
// Spells
4 Khalni Heart Expedition
3 Early Harvest
4 Heartbeat of Spring
4 Time Warp
1 Tangle
3 Crystal Shard
4 Delay
4 Banefire
4 Mindslaver
// Side
SB: 3 Sakura-Tribe Elder
SB: 4 Garruk Wildspeaker
SB: 3 Tangle
SB: 2 Mana Flare
SB: 3 Krosan Grip
Thanks!

Nice idea. You might find room for wash out or evacuation for protection against creatures and to get another use out of your green creatures.
Oh God! How come I forgot Evacuation! But now it's hard to decide where does it fit better.
What about the sideboard?
And one last question: in a scale from 0 to 10, how competitive do you consider this deck? 1, 2? :D
Tks.

I think Sakura-Tribe-Elder deserves 4 spots in the maindeck, even more than Wood Elves do. I also think 4 Time Warp 4 Mindslaver is pushing it too far. You might also want to consider 4 Elpehant Grass in the sideboard.

Is this a developing deck that could negate the draw back of the card Savor the Moment.
Allowing the deck to have a 3cmc time walk vs a 5 mana one.
Im not sure i understand the deck fully but it looks interesting to say the least.
Any reason for running a blue combo deck with no counters?

The problem is that Sakura can only trigger the ramping upon sacrifice, not as entering the BF. I don't have an "infine" creature-returner like Crystal Shard. What do you think?

Thanks! So let me go along the subject and explain the deck to the ones who didn't get the whole idea: it consists on ramping so I can early play a safe Heartbeat of Spring; safe means: not a turn-three, but four with more than four lands in play, so I can play something else in the same turn, maybe a Shard. Until I have enought mana to splash the opponent with a Banefire tunned with an Early Harvest, I keep the game selfish by Time Warping and grabbing the reins with Mindslaver repeatedly, returning the Warp from the graveyard with an Eternal Witness and bouncing back with the Crystal Shard. When things are clearer, I play-and-bounce Wood Elves to have my forests, use them to block, and bounce before being killed by an attacking creature.
The problem is the defense and consistency. Not always the right cards come soon enough.
I'll do a playtest with Savor.

There are counters, four Delays! But as you can see there are no FoWs. Delay is good because it can counter any spell, costs only one blue mana, and doesn't have Mana Leak's drawback, since with a Heartbeat of Spring in play the opponent will definitely have three mana available. This is one of the defenses.
Edit: the output now is:
//NAME: Heartbeating in Time
// Lands
8 Forest
6 Island
2 Mountain
2 Wooded Foothills
3 Misty Rainforest
// Creatures
4 Eternal Witness
4 Wood Elves
// Spells
4 Khalni Heart Expedition
3 Early Harvest
4 Heartbeat of Spring
3 Savor the Moment
2 Time Warp
1 Tangle
3 Crystal Shard
4 Delay
4 Banefire
3 Mindslaver
// Side
SB: 3 Sakura-Tribe Elder
SB: 3 Garruk Wildspeaker
SB: 2 Tangle
SB: 3 Krosan Grip
SB: 4 Elephant Grass
BUT I think the Savor didn't help much. I self-playtested in Apprentice. More Warps instead of Savors appers to be more consistent, and the drawback is still a problem.

Explore >>>> Savor the Moment, in this deck.
So what would you suggest to replace with Explore? According to my tests, Savor the Moment was not very consistent. So I got back to the Time Warps.

In fact you could just port the 2005 Extended "Nevermind" deck to Legacy. It as basically Heartbeat of Spring, Early Harvest that replaced Mind's Desire with Ideas Unbound and killed with Brain Freeze. You might even be able to work Force of Will into it.
Here's a list from the top of my head:
12 Forest
10 Island
4 Heartbeat of Spring
4 Sakura-Tribe Elder
4 Search for Tomorrow
4 Ideas Unbound
4 Gifts Ungiven
4 Nostalgic Dreams
3 Early Harvest
3 Fact of Fiction
3 Cunning Wish
2 Moment's Peace
1 Brain Freeze
1 Revive
1 Deep Analysis
SB:
3 Brain Freeze
1 Chain of Vapor
1 Early Harvest
1 Fact or Fiction
3 Mana Short
1 Memory Lapse
2 Moment's Peace
1 Naturalize
1 Stifle
1 Words of Wisdom
It's a real blast to play but of course you'd have to work Force of Will as well as Brainstorm into it. At least, that's what first comes to my mind. On the other hand one has to ask himself why he/she wouldn't play Solidarity/Spring Tide in the first place.
