Platinum Emperion

vs

Sorin Markov

Ok, Sorin's ability will not trump the Emperium, but I can't find a good reference in the comp rules for this. I just want to make sure I am right, but I really have no idea where to look for that one.

Just like a number for the section for reference.

If your life total is something other than 10, and an effect sets it to 10, it's a textbook example of your life total changing, which Emperion won't allow. I'm pretty sure there isn't a rule that covers this specific interaction, but this one should make it easier to understand for anyone who doesn't think it's obvious enough:

118.5. If an effect sets a player's life total to a specific number, the player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to end up with the new total.

No rule was added for Platinum Emperion's effect, though a couple of rules were tweaked slightly for it. If there was a rules entry, it would say essentially exactly what Emperion's reminder text says.

The rule Filth posted covers life-setting effects like Sorin's.

I figured there would be an update for Emperion, but I guess not. Explains why I couldn't find it. Thanks as usual!

I found the answer to this question. It is a "golden rule."

101.2. When a rule or effect allows or directs something to happen, and another effect states that it can't happen, the "can't" effect takes precedence.
Example: If one effect reads "You may play an additional land this turn" and another reads "You can't play land cards this turn," the effect that precludes you from playing lands wins.

So in this specific case, Platinum Emperion says that your life total can't change, so that wins out over Sorin or anything else that can change a life total.
